Pint-sized puzzler

Resident Steve Rodenbeck gets

chance to represent United States
at Special Olympics World Games
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
If one were to attend a Special
Olympics New Jersey competition, theres a decent chance
theyd get to see 32-year-old Marlton resident Steve Rodenbeck.
Rodenbeck is a busy athlete,
competing in programs yearround in flag football, basketball,
floor hockey, volleyball and tennis. Hes participated in numerous Special Olympics events, including on a floor hockey team at
the Winter World Games in Boise,
Idaho, in 2009.
Just a few weeks ago, Rodenbeck got to check off another box
on his long list of athletic accomplishments
Rodenbeck played on the Team
New Jersey unified volleyball
team in Los Angeles last month at
Special Olympics Summer World
Games. The team was chosen to
represent Team USA in the unified volleyball tournament.
The World Games is the largest
international summer event for
Special Olympics. Like its Summer Olympics counterpart, it is
held once every four years. Los

Angeles hosted this years event.

It was the first time the Summer
World Games were held in the
United States since 1999.
When Rodenbeck found out
hed have the opportunity to participate in the Summer World
Games for the first time, he was
ecstatic.
I was jumping over the stars,
Rodenbeck said. It was a great
feeling to be selected.
Rodenbeck was one of just 17
athletes from New Jersey selected
for the games. In addition to the
unified volleyball team, four
triathletes, two gymnasts and two
cyclists from the Garden State
also traveled to Los Angeles. Having already represented the United States at the Winter World
Games in 2009, Rodenbeck couldnt wait to do it again.
I feel very honored to represent our country, he said. Its
just a great overall feeling. Its
something we were very proud
of.
Rodenbeck began playing unified volleyball a couple years ago
after participating in a clinic. He

The Evesham Township Officer of the Month for July is Patrolman Richard Hernandez.
Hernandez has been a member
of the Evesham Police Department for 14 years. Hernandez is
commended for his exceptional
investigative skills, initiative and
dedication to the community.
On July 5 during the early
morning hours, Hernandez investigated a motor vehicle burglary
in progress on Hamilton Road.
While canvassing the area, Hernandez observed three suspicious
males in the parking lot of McDonalds.
Hernandez interviewed the
subjects and subsequently gained
a confession to numerous vehicle

burglaries throughout the township.

Hernandezs interview skills
and commitment led to the recovery of stolen currency, electronic
devices and other personal items
that were taken during these car
burglaries.
During the month of July,
Hernandez responded to a residence where a middle-aged male
was threatening to kill himself.
The suicidal male fled on foot
into a densely wooded area where
the subject could not be located
even after numerous K-9 searches
and cell phone pings.
Hernandez continued to canvass the neighborhood and located the subject walking in the area
of his residence eight hours after
the search began.
The subject had been consuming a large amount of prescription pills and was intending to
harm himself.
The subject was immediately

Hernandez is commended for
his proactive approach in arresting the three subjects for committing the vehicle burglaries and
his unwavering commitment in
locating the suicidal male eight
hours after he was reported missing.
Hernandezs commitment undoubtedly saved the suicidal
males life.

Evesham municipal complex to gain

touch screen information kiosk
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Residents who need a little help
finding their way around the Evesham Township Municipal Complex will soon have just that.
The help comes as Evesham
Township is set to soon launch its
own touch screen information
kiosk, which will stand at the entrance of the municipal building
past the buildings second set of
sliding doors, next to the stairway
and elevator.
According to township manager Tom Czerniecki, the kiosk will
replace the current system of directing residents, which is a large
easel with a sheet of paper listing
the location of the services a resident might be looking for.
In 2008, we said lets list the
service your looking for rather
than the department, and the

room number, so that was a leap

forward, but we realized that we
actually need both, Czerniecki
said.
We need an actual map by department, and we also need a map
by service.
Czerniecki said that the council budgeted for the project some
time ago, but finding the software
akin to the type of system that
many corporations use was expensive.
As such, Czerniecki said township management information
systems director Lisa Ott was
able to use Microsofts basic PowerPoint program to design a system to suit the townships needs.
We were really reluctant to
commit to any one vendor because historically we tend to pay
for more than we use, but with
the reduction in cost for some of
the touch screen technology

thats out there, Lisa worked really hard to find a way to make
PowerPoint useful with this, Czerniecki said.
Upon approaching the kiosk,
users will see a screen that will
fade in and out when the kiosk is
not in direct use that will display
upcoming meetings set to take
place at the municipal building.
On that touch screen will be
two options for residents to select
with their finger an option for
the buildings directory by department name and number, and
an option for a directory by services available at the complex.
Users can select the building
directory if they know the exact
department theyre looking for,
which will take them to a page
listing the different departments
and their room numbers.
Touching one of those room
numbers will then take visitors to
a screen with a map of the municipal building, as well as written
directions telling visitors how to
get to the room they selected
using the stairs or the elevators.
If a resident approaches the
kiosk and is unsure what department theyre looking for, they can
select the service directory, which
Czerniecki said will give them a
list of the top 10 services and information available at the municipal building that residents do not
perform online
Those services include construction and zoning permits,
court business, employment applications, fire inspections, marriage licenses and vital statistics,
miscellaneous licenses and permits, pet licenses, property assessments, tax payments and
water and sewer business.
The kiosks screens will also
feature a QR code for municipal
building visitors to scan with
their smart phones that will allow
visitors to follow the townships
Facebook page.
Czerniecki said an audio button would eventually also be
available to announce directions
as well.

few more weeks. Thats all

that we have left of summer.
Technically, there are about
six weeks left, but in the lives of us
New Jersey residents, Labor Day
when most schools go back in session
for the 2015-2016 year marks the end
to our summer.
No more beach. No more pool. No
more fun OK, maybe thats a bit dramatic.
But its not all doom and gloom with
summer gone. In fact, theres plenty to
be excited about, and weve been hard
at work covering this excitement already.
Our senior associate editor, Mike
Monostra, loves this time of year.
Thats because the end of August
means the start of one of his passions covering sports. Mike has been
on the summer sports camp trail for a
week or so now, and he will continue to

Unified volleyball is a unique
event at Special Olympics where
athletes with disabilities compete
with those without intellectual
disabilities, named unified partners. Rodenbeck said playing
with unified partners has allowed
him to make new friends and
learn more about volleyball strategy.
What happens is they show
you how to position yourself, he
said. There were a couple times
we had to switch from right to left
and from left to right and the partner would show us how to get set
and in position on offense and defense.
Shortly after the 2014 USA
Games ended last summer, the
volleyball team found out it
would be going to the World
Games in 2015.
We received a letter in the
mail saying weve been chosen to
represent the United States, Rodenbeck said.
The team traveled to California
the week prior to the start of the
world games and trained at University of California-Riverside.
Once the competition got underway, Team New Jersey ran
into some tough competition
against countries such as Germany and Austria. Rodenbeck
said the teams goal was to put its
best effort forward each match.
We just wanted to go out
there, do our best and have a
great time, he said.
The team fell short of a bronze
