TheoriginalH&Rfirmwasinbusinessforoveracenturyfrom1871to1986.[1]
FrankWessonstartedafirearmsmanufacturingfirmin1859,sharinganearlypatentwithNathan
Harrington.Wessonproducedtwotriggerriflesandspurtriggerpistolsandpocketrifles/shotguns
popularforshortlengthholstermodelssuchasthediscontinuedtoppercompactpocketshotguns.
Hestartedabriefpartnershipin1871withhisnephewGilbertHendersonHarrington,asWesson
&Harrington,untilHarringtonboughthimoutin1874.
H&RFactoryPostcard

In1875HarringtonandanotherformerWessonemployee,WilliamAugustusRichardson,formed
thenewHarrington&RichardsonCompany.In1888thefirmwasincorporatedasTheHarrington
&RichardsonArmsCompany.Theiroriginalcapitalinvestmentwas$75,000.Harringtonwas
president,Richardsonwastreasurer,andGeorgeF.Brookswassecretary.Afterthedeathsof
HarringtonandRichardsonin1897,Brooksbecamethemanagerandthecompanywasheldby
heirsEdwinC.Harrington(GilbertHarringtonsson)andMaryA.Richardson(William
Richardsonssister).
In1894thecompanyopenedanewfacilityonParkAvenueinWorcester,Massachusetts.The

H&RFactoryRuin.PicturetakenfromPark

factorywasexpandedagainafterafewyears.Thefirearmsproducedthroughthistimeto1911

carryextremevalueasoriginalantiquities.Originalriflesandshotgunsfromthesedatesarescarce
becauseoftheirlimitedproductionanddiscontinuedparts.
In1950thecompanyopenedanewfacilityonCockburnstreetinDrummondville,Qubec,Canada.
Inthe1960sH&RwasacquiredbytheKiddecorporationandrunbytheRowefamily.WarrantycardsweresenttoIndustrialRowe,
Gardner,Massachusetts.[2]TheoriginalH&Rcompanywentoutofbusinessin1986,andthebuildingwasdemolished.[3]
Anewcompany,H&R1871,Inc.,wasformedin1991andstartedproductionofrevolvers,singleshotriflesandshotgunsusingoriginal

Marlin,includingallitsH&Rassets,waslateracquiredbyRemingtonArmsCompanyinDecember,2007.H&R1871,LLCproduction
wasmovedtoIlion,N.Y.(thesiteofRemingtonsoriginalmanufacturingplant)inlate2008,whiletheircorporateofficesarecolocated

duringtheVietnamWar,andisoneofonlyfourmanufacturers(alongwithColt,FabriqueNational,&GMHydramaticDivision)tohave
evermadeanofficialM16variantfortheU.S.Military.[1]Duetotheirrelativescarcity,allH&Rmilitaryweaponsareconsidered

ThefirmwasnamedsoleNorthAmericanlicenseeforEnglandsAnson&Deelydoublebarrelhammerlessshotgun.[8]
In1932,anH&RpistolwasusedtosetanewU.S.pistolrecord,andwouldgoontobecomethemostfamousfirearmofitskindthe
U.S.R.A.singleshottargetpistol.ThispistolwassoaccuratethatitwasadoptedbytheU.S.ArmyPistolTeam.[9]
