College Planning 101

Prepping for college? Parents, students, and college enrollment/funding experts
weigh in on what it takes to select the best college. { BY STEPHANIE FARRELL }

Stockton Universitys Dean of Enrollment Management John Iacovelli

recommends visiting colleges: You can do virtual tours. There are
some people who think thats the same as boots on the ground, but
its not.

ollege by the numbers is daunting. With almost

3,000 options and an average cost of $20,000 to
$50,000 per year, getting a bachelors degree
could bring a staggering debt to both students and parents. But with some careful thought and preparation, it
doesnt have to be that way.
Bailey Giblin, a 2014 Vineland High School graduate,
had her heart set on attending University of Utah. The
summer before her senior year, the family took a road
trip to California and back. I just wanted to be out
there. Its so pretty. I didnt apply anywhere else, says
Giblin. It was about $40,000 a year, that included room
and board. The thought of being that much in debt just
for my bachelorsthe debt was a looming thought over
my head.
Instead, Giblin is going to earn a bachelors degree in
two and half years covered by academic and financial
scholarships. She took advantage of the NJ STARS program. Students have to be in the top 15 percent of their
class; it offers a full-tuition scholarship to a two-year college. She was able to use other scholarship money, like
from the Rotary Club, to help pay for books and fees. She
also had 33 AP credits under her belt. Thats the best
thing I ever did. Giblin finished her Associates in
Biomedical/Health at Cumberland County College
(CCC) in one year.
Since she was in the top three of her class, she
received a $5,000 year transfer trustee scholarship for
Rowan University. Now without that debt burden, Giblin
plans to go to medical school and become an ER surgeon.
I have three semesters at Rowan instead of four. In the
fourth semester, I would like to volunteer, hopefully in
India. I never would get to do that if I went to Utah.
When should you start prepping for college? Right

Walkup to Meet Trout,

See Game for First Time
Millville native
Thomas Walkup
was born with
congenital nystagmus. Legally blind
thus far in life, the
8-year-old is in
California where,
late last week, he
had a three-hour
procedure by Dr. Robert Lingua. Early indications are the surgery was a success.
Wellness update on Facebook group called
Seeing The Future Thru Thomass Eyes Support
Page: Surgery went great. Thomas has some
healing to do, but he is such a trooper and will be
just fine in time. Initially, we were told he probably wouldn't be able to open his eyes for approximately 24-48 hours after surgery but that amazing little boy opened his eye (the other eye was
patched at the time) and told his mom about the
cars he could see and the colors they were.
And the surgery is just half of the story.
Im excited to go to California to meet Mike
Trout and Ill be able to get my eyes fixed,
Thomas told SNJ Today reporter Mike Frankel
earlier this summer.
Through Trouts parents, the Los Angeles
Angels of Anaheim heard about Thomas trip.
A letter came in the mail from the Angels
writer and said Ill be able to do batting practice
with Mike Trout, and Ill be able to go see a
game, said Walkup.
The Los Angeles Angels invited Thomas to
the August 21 game, where he will meet fellow
Millville native and Angels star Mike Trout. Tim
Mead, the Angels vice president of communications, also set Thomas up with trips to Legoland
California Resort and Disneyland.

Tides Up
Three properties shown on the June
broker tour are rented already.

{ 2 } the grapevine | AUGUST 19, 2015

ere having a ribbon-cutting

event Wednesday of this
week for five downtowns
businesses. I know that
weve had ribbon-cuttings before and we
had a large ribbon-cutting event a couple of
months ago. This event, though, is a celebration of businesses and an important step
in turning the tide on downtown vacancies.
At our broker/agents tour last June, we
showed 15 properties. We came away feeling optimistic and the brokers and agents
went away impressed. That work has paid
off. Three of the properties shown that day
have already been rented and well be celebrating the grand opening of one of them
La Cabana Tio Tom Deli Express, at 636 E.
Landis Avenueat this ribbon-cutting
event. The other two will be part of our
next group of ribbon-cuttings. To knock
three vacancies off that list of 15 in such a
short period of time is really tremendous
and its testimony to the success of this
approach. We want to fill the other vacancies and were planning to have another
broker/agents tour in the fall. So, look forward to a lot more ribbon-cuttings as we
help turn empty storefronts into thriving,
successful businesses.
Back to the present, well start our
ribbon-cutting event at the Main Street
Vineland office, at 603 E. Landis Avenue,
and then proceed at 9:30 a.m. at G Street,
which has moved its clothing store from
West Landis Avenue to 547 E. Landis
Avenue, Suite Bright at the corner of
Sixth and Landis avenues. Well then
move to Jessies Bazaar at 537 E. Landis
Avenue for two businesses that have
moved from Landis MarketPlace
Vibrante Hair and Beauty in Suite C and
Jazzys African Fabric in Suite C. Then,
its on to La Cabana Tio Tom Deli Express,

which Ive already mentioned, and we

conclude at 10:15 with Spataros Pizza,
which has moved up from the lower to the
upper level at Landis MarketPlace, 631 E.
Landis Avenue.
This weeks ribbon-cutting event
accomplishes another important mission of
Main Street Vineland. As you can see, all
but one of the businessesLa Cabana Tio
Tom Deli Expressare not new but have
moved from other downtown locations. So,
those ribbon-cuttings are not to celebrate
new businesses but to celebrate these
established businesses continuity and success in their new locations. A key mission
of Main Street Vineland, in addition to
bringing in new businesses, is to help the
existing downtown businesses market
themselves and be successful. All these
businesses are important and contribute
greatly to the downtown business profile
and we want to do our part to keep these
businesses successful and viable.
Ribbon-cuttings are always a happy
occasion. The business owners invite their
families and friends and we invite dignitaries from Main Street Vineland, the city,
and the state. It gives the businesses a
moment in the sun, as well a boost of attention and publicity, but it also shows the
increasing variety of downtown businesses.
Wed love as many members of the public to come and join us in the celebration. If
you see this too late to come this time
around, you can catch the next one. Youll
also be able to read about it here, coming
up soon. As I keep saying, stay tuned. I

A handwritten copy of Landis science

fiction manuscript titled A Trip to Mars
was discovered last year by the Vineland
Historical & Antiquarian Societys curator
Patricia A. Martinelli while inventorying
the Landis family files. The story was written in 1876 after Mr. Landis had undergone
a series of personal tragediethe loss of
his firstborn son, his arrest on murder
charges, and divorce from wife Clara.
We see this as his way to escape from
his personal problems, said Martinelli.
Mr Landis wrote a lot, but this rare book
is unique among all his writings.
Recognizing the significance of her
find, Martinelli contacted Dr. Thomas
Kinsella, director of Stockton Universitys
South Jersey Culture & History Center,
about publishing the manuscript. He was
delighted to bring such an unusual piece
of South Jerseys past to the public for the
first time, she recalls.
Written about 10 years after Jules
Verne first launched his space travelers to
the moon, but before H.G. Wells and other
authors sent their heroes into space,
Landis work is a classic example of the
early days of the science fiction genre.
A Trip to Mars is available from the
Society for $9.95 a copy. Call 856-691-1111
or e-mail vinelandhistory@gmail.com. All
profits from book sales will benefit the
museums collections fund.

Frances (Tuso) Vingi, 87, of Vineland,

passed away peacefully at home on
August 7, with her daughters at her
bedside. Born and raised in Vineland,
Frances was a 1945 graduate of
Vineland High School, and attended
Glassboro State Teachers College. She
was a substitute teacher for the
Vineland/Millville School District and a
homemaker. She leaves behind to
cherish her memories the father of her
children, Matthew Vingi, daughters
Lynda Vingi, Francine Vingi Hovermann
and daughter Rosemarie Lavala, all
of with whom she resided, her grandson, Fred Hovermann, Jr., her sister,
Marie Albano, and her cousin, Marie
Lorito.
Paul Infranco, 84, of Vineland, passed
away peacefully on August 7, surrounded by his family. Paul was born in
Sicily and immigrated to America in
1959. He started a career in the food
processing industry with Progresso
Foods. His expertise in designing and
building food processing equipment
led to him being sought after by many
in the industry. Paul was founder and
president of Buona Vita, Inc. Paul is
survived by his wife, Antoinette Toni
and his children Piera (Henry)
Kramarski; JoAnna (R. Blake) Christy
and Paul (Phyllis) Infranco and seven
grandsons Dr. Henry, Nicholas and
Phillip Kramarski; P. Blake and Austin
Christy; and Paul and Anthony
Infranco. He is also survived by brother
Dr. Biagio (Sarina) Infranco, sister
Rosina Infranco, and caregiver
Alexandra Lubkovich.
Helen (Bondy) Morris, 86, who was
evacuated as a young girl from Nazioccupied Prague on the so-called
Kindertransport, passed away on
August 10 at Inspira Medical Center of
heart failure. She had lived in Vineland
for the past 70 years. Helen was one of
669 Jewish youths in Czechoslovakia
rescued by Nicholas Wintons operation that sent the children to England,
where they were cared for by volunteer
families. Helen was received by a

wealthy London pair. Her own mother,

despairing at the separation, had waited until the last successful transport to
send Helen. Her parents and a brother
later successfully escaped the Nazis
and reclaimed her during the war. She
then settled in Vineland, as her once
well-to-do parents tried their hand at
chicken farming. She later married
Ernest Morris, another immigrant
transplanted to Vineland, and worked
as a secretary. She was predeceased
by her husband Ernest. She is survived
by niece Larisa Bondy; nephew Filip
Bondy; four grand-nephews and a
grand-niece.
Leonard W. Peterson, 92, of Galloway
Township, went to be with the Lord on
August 10, from home. Born in
Goshen, Uncle Leonard was a longtime
resident of Cumberland County. Uncle
Leonard served in the United States
Army as a staff sergeant during World
War II. He was retired as a sewing
machine operator and foreman for several different clothing manufacturers,
most notably Rossi Clothing Co. Uncle
Leonard spent the last five years volunteering his talent and sewing skills
making many children happy at the
Shriners Hospital for Children in
Philadelphia. He made dolls and teddy
bears for the children. He is survived
by his nephew and caregiver John
Gorbig, wife Irma, nephew Robert
Gorbig, and nieces Jean Gorbig,
Christine Crawford and Susan
Gillespie. He was predeceased by his
wife Julia.
Theresa (Rossi) Atkinson, 79, of
Vineland, passed away peacefully at
home on August 11, after a long battle
with dementia. Born in Vineland to
Edward and Rose Rossi, she attended
Sacred Heart School and spent her
career working for the City of Vineland.
She enjoyed cooking and spending
time with family. She is survived by
daughter and son-in-law Stephanie and
Devon Grunwell of Glenmoore, PA; son
Chris Atkinson of Vineland, and grandsons Dane and Davis Grunwell.

he closing of the Cumberland

Nail and Iron Works at the end
of 1899 marked the end of an
era for Bridgeton. No one at the
time knew that its demise would provide
the city with an even more enduring
prospect.
All the equipment from the company
had been sold before the start of 1900,
except for one of the nail machines,
because its weight prohibited it from
being moved. As South Jersey Magazine
reported, An oldtimer (sic) remembers
there was a mate to this machine and
when it was moved across the bridge, it
fell through, taking a man, horse and
wagon with it. After this tragedy, they
were frightened to move the other.
The tale of the Cumberland Nail and
Iron Works would end sadly if it werent
for the Citys foresight in the matter. The
idyllic location once claimed by the now
defunct business could be put to use in a
different way, one that could accommodate all residents of the town as well as
tourists. The creation of Bridgeton City
Park rose from the ashes of the
Cumberland Works early in the 20th
century.
According to the Center for Historic
American Building Arts (CHABA) website, the local inventor and entrepreneur
Oberlin Smith played a significant role in
the creation of the Bridgeton City Park
through preservation of the Cumberland
Nail and Iron Works landholdings when
that industry left Bridgeton in 1899. The
Works had long since turned from waterpower to steam by mid-century, and their
watershed lands had become a recreational resource for Bridgetoniansstudents,
workers and familieson Sundays and
holidays. Smith encouraged the City to
buy the property, an amazing free amenity
for visitors to this day.
In 1903, the title to the property was
transferred to the City for a price of
$40,000. Mary Elmer bequeathed a tract
of adjoining land with a lake in 1914.
The property, a total of 1,100 acres
according to the Bridgeton website,
includes Mary Elmer Lake, Sunset Lake,
and East Lake. The Cohansey River, the
original source of power for the first mill

established by the Cumberland Nail and

Iron Works, is part of the aesthetics of the
area.
On a visit to Bridgeton, E. R. Mills, a
Rocky Mountain Guide writer, proclaimed
Bridgeton Park one of the finest combinations of wood and water [Ive] ever
seen. Even a landscape engineer from
New York visited the location shortly after
it was purchased by the city. His advice
was not to touch it or we would spoil it.
Three decades after it purchased the
property, the City added to its acquisition.
As the Bridgeton website explains, In
1934, the City found itself in possession of
a small herd of deer which the citizens
thought should be exhibited. With this,
the Cohanzick Zoo began. The zoo was
named for the band of Lenape Indians
who resided in Bridgeton alongside the
river; as a result, they became known as
the Cohanzick Indians.
The new addition is credited with
being New Jersey's first zoo. It is part of
the Department of Recreation and Public
Affairs, and according to the City website,
remains one of the only municipal zoos
in New Jersey.
The Bridgeton Antiquarian League saw
fit to pay tribute to the company whose
grounds the park now occupies. The
office of the Cumberland Nail and Iron
Works remained as the Nail House
Museum, a portal to the Citys past and
reminder of its legacy.
In 1974, Bridgeton mayor Edison D.
Shinn spoke about the park and its place
in the city, aware of how it provides a connection between people of his era as well
as a bond with those who have come
before us.
Our park is something generations
of our people have been proud of and
we enjoy seeing how others also
appreciate its beauty, he said. We have
always been glad to share its facilities
with neighboring communities and are
pleased to see they have enjoyed its
pleasures as much as we have over the
years. Our grandparents were attracted
to the park in the days before automobiles and the tradition of a stroll on its
quiet paths has continued into our
own time. I

COLLEGE

For More Information:

(Continued from cover)

after the baby is born, says Gerald Covella,
president of College Funding Authority
(CFA). Truly as early as possible.
CFA offers free workshops to students
and parents. Their paid services are a onestop shop to navigate college planning.
Our personnel on the student services
side include career counselors, guidance
counselors with work at the college level,
financial aid specialists and tutors. On the
planning side, we utilize accountants and
financial services experts who specialize
in college funding strategies. Covella says
for students who have taken the SAT
before, they are able to help raise the
scores 200 to 300 points.
Covellas team also has data to predict
the likelihood of the student getting
accepted at different schools and whether
merit and financial aid are likely to be part
of the deal.
Weve had some amazing success.
Dont look at the sticker price, says
Covella. You have to understand the purchase that youre making; its much like
buying a house or a car. The sticker price
doesnt take into account the amount of
financial aid.

The Souders started prepping their

kids for college early on tooby telling
them they were not going to pay for it.
We told them when they were school
age. They need to do well in school, seize
the opportunity theyve been given, get
scholarships, says Tammie Souder, mom
of four. You need to go where its practical. Its a means to an end. We never
intended to pay.
Souder says she worked 25 hours a
week waiting tables while in school. Her
husband earned his bachelors and masters degrees while working full-time and
raising a family. Souder believes that the
kids have to have something to lose. They
need to be invested. They have to have
skin in the game. I have seen a lot of parents send their kids off, then $30,000
later, the kid either failed or quit because
it wasnt like it was supposed to be. Thats
a lot of money.
The strategy is working out well so far.
Both their daughter, Taylor, and their son,
Lonnie Jr., graduated 7th in their class at
Buena High School (2012 and 2015). Like
Giblin, Taylor took advantage of the
STARS program and attended CCC for
free. She then transferred to Liberty

graduate, took advantage of the NJ STARS
program and will earn a bachelors degree
in two and a half years covered by academic and financial scholarships.

University for her last three semesters,

where she will graduate with a bachelors.
She hasnt borrowed any money yet. The
Souders help with insurance and books.
Lonnie, Jr. will be attending Rowan for
mechanical engineering. He got an academic achievement scholarship, which
covers tuition and books. To further offset expenses, he will live at home and
commute.
For the Souders, who value education,
the decision not to pay is not a punitive
one, but a practical reality. I dont see
how we could foot the bill for four kids.
Their kids will know that they have
earned their college degree through their
own hard work.
John Iacovelli, Stockton Universitys
Dean of Enrollment Management, says
grades and SAT scores are the primary
determiners for admissions. We are looking for the solid A/B or B/A student. We
receive 5,600 to 5,800 applications for
1,150 to 1,200 openings. We read the high
school transcript very closely. Do we like
to see that the student has taken Honors
or AP classes? Yes. And if theyve done
well, its a positive thing to see.
The second thing is the standardized
test scores, which despite what is being
said, 95 percent of universities still use.
From school district to school district, you
notice the subjectivity. But whether the

student is from a fancy prep school or an

urban school, the SAT shows their cognitive academic skills, how well do they
read and comprehend, what are their
math skills. The SAT takes the subjectivity
out of it. For kids who are on the cusp, we
look at their activities in and out of school
and their writing. Stocktons average SAT
is 1,110.
Academics trumps athletics by 8 to 1,
by 10 to 1, says Iacovelli. For those students who excel, Stockton offers differing
levels of scholarship. He also cautions parents not to chase the nameplate and
have kids walk away with huge debt. Im
very concerned about debt. We wear
where our kid is going to college as if it
shows us how good a parent we were.
State schools offer a competitive
alternative.
If youre looking at them, youll find
pockets of excellence. He cites Stocktons
marine biology as being a top-ranked program nationally; another example is
Rowans engineering program. Iacovelli
highly recommends visiting colleges. You
can do virtual tours. There are some people who think thats the same as boots on
the ground, but its not.
The advice is clear. Grades matter and
the SAT matters. They make the difference between getting admitted or not;
they also can be converted into substantial
scholarship dollars.
Help your children figure out what
they want to study. The more direction
they have, the better. Research the
schoolsnot just the sticker price, but
what they offer in aid.
Consider the state options; perhaps
within commuting distance is the bestranked program for their interest. What is
loud and clear: dont take on tens of thousands in debt for a bachelors degree.
Covella tells parents that the debt is all
they might have left. College loans are
not wiped away by bankruptcy
proceedings. I

Vineland High School Marching Clan

PresentsCelestial Journeys
The Vineland High School Marching Clan will present a first-look at their 2015
field show at an Open Rehearsal for friends, family and the community on
Thursday, August 27. The performance will take place at 7 p.m. on the band
practice field located at Vineland High School South, 2880 E. Chestnut Avenue,
Vineland. All are welcome to attend.
The Marching Clan, under the direction of William McDevitt and his staff, is
currently preparing the show entitledCelestial Journeysduring eight days of
rigorous practice at their annual Band Camp. According to McDevitt, "This year's
field show takes its cue from the celestial bodies of the solar system. You will
hear representations of the stars and planets in the music and see these forms
on the field as well. The Color Guard will play an important role in bringing these
forms to life with new, brightly-colored flags."
The purpose of the Open Rehearsal is to get the band in front of an audience
for the first time this season, as well as to offer the community a sneak peek at
the new field show. The Vineland High School Marching Clan is excited to perform this fall in a full schedule of parades, football games and competitions.
