2. GLOBAL TRADE - KEY FINDINGS

Germany dominates in the global motor vehicle engine trade. In 2014,
Germany exported 2,574 thousand motor vehicle engines totaling 5,311 million
USD, 36% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was the U.S.,
where it supplied 23% of its total motor vehicle engine exports in value terms,
accounting for 13% of the U.S.'s total imports.
From 2007 to 2012, Germany was a net importer of motor vehicle engines.
Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. In
physical terms, from 2007-2012, the difference was less pronounced. Due to
imports price growth in 2013, the variance between exports and imports
increased and became more evident. In 2013-2014, the situation flipped with
imports outpacing exports.
The U.S. and Hungary were among the other main global suppliers of motor
vehicle engines in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to
2014 were Spain (+18% per year) and Mexico (+12% per year).
Germanys top 5 trading partners in 2014 were the U.S., Spain, Turkey, the
United Kingdom and Hungary, with a combined 59% share of Germanys motor
vehicle engine exports. The share of Spain increased (+7 percentage points),
while the share of Turkey illustrated negative dynamics (-9 percentage points).
