Herman Hertzberger - Architecture And Structuralism

nai010 publishers 2015 ISBN 9789462081536 Acqn 24017

"This book is an attempt to formulate what structuralism means in architecture, and why that
matters. There are many misunderstandings about the concept of structuralism in general, and
especially where architecture is concerned. There is also a renewed interest in structuralism.
What I see as the real structuralism in architecture is a way of thinking that has far-reaching
opportunities for the reuse of buildings, which can give a new impulse to the discussion about
sustainability. In addition, the possibility of users having a greater influence has revealed the
blueprint for a more democratic architecture." - Herman Hertzberger

Seeing Architecture - Design Contribution To Knowledge Building

Editions B42 2015 ISBN 9782917855546 Acqn 24832
Pb 13x21cm 264pp col ills 17.50
Today, our daily life depends as much on the architecture of digital data as on that of the built
environment. Despite our different uses of these constructions, they pose the same questions of
structure, organisation, access, pathways, visibility, protection and identity. Going beyond a
consideration of their irreducible material individuality, these essays seek to examine the
processes that come into play at the moment of conception in the past and the present of some
of the critical moments in the perception of these architectures.

Suep Book 1 - Architecture As A Part Of Natural Circulation

Garden City Publishing 2015 ISBN 9789866204876 Acqn 24942
Hb 19x19cm 204pp col ills 21.95
Architects Hirokazu Suemitsu and Yoko Suemitsu (SUEP.) established their practice in 2004.
Like Toyo Ito, for whom Hirokazu previously worked, the husband and wife team believe in a
certain generative order in nature, and attempt to discover its logic and transform this into design
elements. Their observation of the physical traits of natural things and energy flows has led to
their use of natural energies and materials, and they seek to engender a coexistence and mutual
respect between architecture and nature. Through more than 30 diverse works, both realised and
conceptual, this volume explores the Suemitsus ideology and its manifestation in their projects.

Attempting to form an overview of the experimentation that has gone into his efforts over the past
two decades, Sou Fujimoto compiles a multifarious and richly illustrated collection of works
concepts, new ideas, and unrealised projects that is remarkable both for its sprawling diversity
and for its consistency in the pursuit of an ideal. As Fujimoto writes in his introduction, Beneath
even the boldest, most daring proposals lie many years of patient trial and error. Each project
description contains index numbers of other projects that bear a resemblance to it, enabling
readers to trace an interconnected web of interrelated concepts through his entire body of work.

One of architectures histories is that of the art of display: architecture displaying power, political
ambition, economic success, social agendas, or less mundane notions like dreams, convictions
and belief. These days architecture has also become subjected to display:
the display of architecture in museums and collections, and in auctions for example. That adds
but also distracts meaning; not every aspect of architecture can be displayed as easy. And what
does a culture of display (be seen or perish) add to this condition? Thinking of the value
of architecture beyond purely financial terms, display is a factor of influence. For better or for
worse.

Lightness and flexibility are frequently combined in the works of Endo Shuhei, who reveals
through his projects a quest for the spatial quality specific to the programme; the dynamic of
separation and organisation achieved through materials in a fusion of new forms. This book
presents 25 works, both realised and conceptual, and from the 1990s through to more recent
works. Endos interest in facilities related to transport is readily apparent, with key examples
being Halftecture F (single train platform), Transtation O (unmanned train station including bicycle
parking), Looptecture F (harbour security and floodgate control centre), and more. With an essay
by Frederic Migayrou.

Designed by American architect Philip Johnson as his own residence, the Glass House in New
Canaan, Connecticut (US), sent shockwaves through the architectural world when it was first
completed, and has remained an icon of American residential modernism ever since. Lovingly
portrayed by Japanese architectural photographer Yukio Futagawa, the house, its galleries of
artworks, outlying studio, and pavilion on the pond all come alive through refined qualities of light
and the natural setting. Moreover, Kengo Kuma contributes an essay in which he describes his
impressions of meeting the architect and the first encounter with his famous house.
