Just Thinking

He was the last child born in 1899 to the president of a
piano company, and the daughter of a Scottish American
painter. They named him Elwyn Brooks White. We know
him as E.B. White; contributor to the New Yorker Magazine
for over 6 decades, and author of Stuart Little and
Charlottes Web to name a few. Over my morning coffee
for the last several weeks, I have been getting to know
him through his book; Letters of E.B. White. These letters
reveal his raw complex personality witty, snarky, angry,
confused, depressed, happy, stubborn, and at times,
frustrated. This man was determined to do things his own
way - unconcerned about jobs or paychecks, and loathing
deadlines or being fenced in.
Most of the time, hand written letters are published posthumously, but E.B. White published his while still alive,
searching far and wide to recover them from those he
once sent them to. He likened publishing his letters to
becoming a nudist, and claimed that: A writer, writing
away, can always fix things up to make himself more presentable, but a man who has written a letter is stuck with
it for all time.
It seems that White required a lot of down time and was
an elusive sort of fellow. In one of the many letters to his
wife Katharine, he informs her that he would be taking a
me year in which he could not be counted on to work for
money, or to show up for dinner on time. When writing to
publishers and editors, his tone was often surly and strong
headed, while other letters indicate a softer side; for example, stories of fishing with his young son Joel, spending time with his farm animals, or relaxing at his summer
home in Maine. It was quite obvious that leisure time was
an essential ingredient to his well being.
Sitting on the shelves of my personal library is another
collection of his works - Essays of E.B. White. Among my
favorites are Death of a Pig - a deft account of White attempting to save the life of his dying pig. His sense of
humor, and at times, complete surrender to the events of
everyday life, makes it hard to put this book down.
There are few things that can be done in a lifetime that
will bring you to the brink of immortality. Writing is one of
them. Although White often said that he found writing
difficult, and was bad for his disposition, he still managed
to write over 17 books during the course of his lifetime.
Thirty years after his death, and eight decades after his
pen first touched the paper, he springs to life again... just
so I can have my morning coffee with him.

This weeks column is dedicated to an
event that will forever define the character of Bennington. In 1777, during the
American Revolution, The Battle of
Bennington was a defining moment that turned the tide in favor
of the rebellious Americans in their fight for independence from
British rule. While I will spare you a history lesson (I am sure
most of you know how this story goes), it is important that we
take a few days every August to celebrate this sweet victory.
Since the time I was just a boy, I can remember the Battle Day
celebration fondly. Although it once represented free candy, as
I grew older it began to mean so much more. There are many
great lessons that we can learn from this battle that should be
celebrated, particularly the ideas of self-defense, standing up
for what is right, resisting unjust rule, and the pursuit of individual rights. It is my hope that today we still hold these values
in such high esteem as those who came before us did. Too often
it may seem inconvenient or fruitless to stand up for what you
know is right or to dissent against poor leadership. However,
we must be aware of the inherent danger that accompanies apathetic approval. To sit idly by and accept what we are told as
gospel is to be blinded. We must be unafraid to speak our minds,
ask tough questions, and to see with our own eyes. Let us not
be led astray by convenience. If the truth is what we seek above
all else, it is what will ultimately set us free.
