Last Sunday, another Body and Blood event. For the Jewish people; incredibly
shocking. As we know blood for the Jews was a difficult concept to grasp as
something good and life giving rather than something that made them unclean,
ritually dirty, excluded from the temple. So when Jesus offers his blood as life for the
world it becomes so anathema for the chosen people, so startling and 'gross' as to
be a barrier for many of them. Ultimately it will be, what will see Jesus go on the
cross and the penultimate moment of his blood for the world. We have to eat and
we have to drink.
Mass at Kularoo

As Ive moved around the city, I've been really struck by just how much poverty
exists here, and how much dignity is stripped away from the poor. There is nothing
pretty about being homeless and poor. Almost, every street corner has someone
with a hand written sign asking for help. The age range is surprising, with so many in
the under 30 bracket. It has an overwhelming feel to it with many walking past
without offering anything. However, in a city the size of New York, I have been
impressed with just how many people do throw a few spare coins into their
outstretched hands and cups.
Even without knowing it perhaps, all those people who are so moved enough to put
a few coins in a homeless persons cup are drinking and eating. A simple gesture of
kindness that is offered without judgement, and the generosity unmissed. They can't
change the situation of each and every one of them, big time, but for one moment
the hungry are fed, they have change for a shelter, and might have a few moments
to reflect on human kindness; someone drinks and eats of the flesh that is given as
life for the world. It's in the simple gestures that our world somehow becomes a
better place.

As you read this I will be packing up my bag and heading home. I've had a great
time. I am grateful to both Fr Bill and Fr Des for making themselves available for
supply. Without the generosity of the retired clergy, parish priests would have a
hard time getting away. So I am grateful.
