The Construction Engineering and Management Group (CEMG), Department of Civil Engineering,
NED University of Engineering & Technology in strategic collaboration with University of Salford
Manchester, UK and Auburn University, USA, organized the 2nd International Workshop on
Building Information Modeling in Architecture, Engineering and Construction Industry (BIM
AEC-II) on June 2-3, 2015. The workshop was supported by Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC)
and Institute of Engineers Pakistan (IEP).

While the first International workshop (BIM AEC-I; June, 2012) was focused on creating general
awareness about BIM technology, this second international workshop (BIM AEC-II) endeavored to
bring in local and foreign experts in BIM implementation so as to strategize the integration of
value chain in local AEC industry. As such, this event provided the industry with the opportunity to
hear from prominent speakers on what BIM has to offer, how it can be incorporated with the
current industry practices with demonstrated examples of BIM in practice, and the role of various
stakeholders in its implementation. The workshop attracted various Architecture, Engineering and
Construction Industry stakeholders and allied professionals such as, Clients, Consultants,
Architects, Engineers, Designers, Project Managers, Construction Managers, Contractors, Sub
Contractors, Suppliers, Manufacturers, Vendors, Regulatory Bodies, Academicians, etc.

The workshop was one of the series of workshops organized by Construction Engineering and
Management Group (CEMG), which is a dynamic, innovative and developmental initiative
undertaken by the Department of Civil Engineering under the auspices of the University in an
attempt to provide strategic leadership and continual training of human resources in the
architecture, engineering and construction industry, leading to a transformed and competitive
construction industry in Pakistan that delivers quality infrastructure and promotes economic
growth on a sustainable basis. The participants strongly identified CMEG as a platform for
collaboration and integration and expressed determination to actively participate in group
meetings and discussions to bring indigenous solutions to pertinent industry issues.

The idea of conducting such workshop was highly appreciated nationwide, where Power Cement,
ER Solutions, Matrix Company, Razzaque Steel, PSO, RESSICHEM and Sadaf Fatima Structural
Engineers extended generous sponsorships to support the event. The workshop was endorsed by
Pakistan Engineering Council to allow 1.0 CPD credit for PEC registered participants.

Highly prominent dignitaries from the local Architecture, Engineering and Construction Industry
graced the occasion by their presence. Senior Architect Mr. Shahid Abdulla (Director, Arshad
Shahid Abdulla Pvt. Ltd.) honored the event as the Chief Guest. Mr. Adnan Asdar (CEO, Multinet
Pakistan Pvt. Ltd., and Founder and Partner, AAA Partnership Pvt. Ltd.), Mr. Ariff ul Islam (CEO
and Director, AAA Partnership Pvt. Ltd.), and Mr. Syed Najmi Hasan (Principal Architect, Zavia
Architecture) chaired various sessions in the 2-day event.

Over one hundred and seventy (170) participants from more than thirty five public/ private sector
organizations of the country attended the workshop, with a female proportion of 14%. They
included representatives from several regulatory agencies, renowned clients, contractors,
consultants, and engineering universities of Pakistan. Few of the participating organizations
included: AA Associates, AAA Partnership, AD Construction company, Aga Khan University
Hospital, Arshad Associates, Associated Constructors Limited, China Harbor, Civil Aviation
Authority, CMES (NAVY) COMKAR, Costveyors Pvt. Ltd, Dewaan Cement EA Consulting Pvt Ltd,
Eagle Foundation, Engineering Design Services, FWO, Habib Rafiq Pvt. Ltd., Halcrow Pakistan,
Jaffer consultants, KPA Consulting, Sadaf Fatima Structural Engineers, Matrix Company, Mehran
University of Engineering and Technology, Military Engineering Services, National Logistic Cell,
NESPAK, Osmani & Company, Pakistan Army, Pakistan State Oil, Power Cement, Quaid-eAwam University, SBCA, SESSI, Shield corporation limited, Sir Syed University of Engineering
and Technology, SUPARCO, Total Construction, University of Karachi, etc. The audience
endorsed that the event successfully contributed in setting a platform to seed the concept of
continuous collaborative efforts in order to develop capacity as well as adopt BIM in the AEC
industry.

During the event, the experienced-rich sessions delivered by the diverse speakers including Prof.
Sarosh H. Lodi (Professor and Dean, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture, NED
University of Engineering and Technology), Prof. Rizwan U. Farooqui (Professor and Co-Chair,
Department of Civil Engineering, NED University of Engineering and Technology and the Focal
Person for the event), Dr. Zeeshan Aziz (Senior Lecturer, University of Salford, Manchester, UK),
Dr. Salman Azhar (Associate Professor and Graduate Program Chair, McWhorter School of
Building Science, Auburn University), Ar. Ejaz Ahed (Managing Architect and CEO, Ahed
Associates), Ms. Kishwer Naz (Manager ESS, Arabtek Pvt Ltd)., and Mr. Ghulam Mujtaba Shaikh
(Director, Halcrow Pakistan) were highly applauded by the participants for providing immense
value to their knowledge base. One prominent feature of the event was the interactive nature of it
that promulgated articulated discussions, brainstorming sessions and manifestation of expert
viewpoints on pertinent issues.

The event closed with a Vote of Thanks by the Focal Person of CEMG, Prof. Rizwan Farooqui to
all event organizers, speakers, dignitaries, participants and volunteers. Prof. Farooqui re-iterated
that CEMG would continue to endeavor in improving the state of affairs of the local Architecture,
Engineering and Construction Industry via acting as a platform for collaboration and integration
among the academia and industry and continuously endeavoring to bring pertinent issues on
board for discussion as well as developing human resource capacity in the industry. Participants
expressed their firm commitment to actively get involved in future group meetings, discussion
forums, seminars and workshops organized under the umbrella of CEMG in order to candidly
discuss these issues and devise indigenous solutions to the pertinent industry problems thereby
increasing the competitiveness of the industry for long-term sustainable national economic
growth. On a final note, Prof. Farooqui shared the plan of upcoming events under CEMG for the
fiscal year 2015-2016.
