Astronomy Night At Kokanee Park
On August 18, 2015, Eric Moon and Marilyn Roberts

presented an astronomy night at the Kokanee Creek Visitors Centre north of Nelson.
The first hour and a half we spent at the visitors centre
introducing people to the universe, including movement
of the earth, moon, planets and stars (orbital mechanics), navigating the sky (constellations and guide stars),
objects to look at in the telescope (what they are and how
they got there) and telescope etiquette. About 50 people

Rising From A Strong Centre
Yasodhara Ashram continues to evolve from a core

strength of learning, teaching and commitment. This
month we are seeing many Yasodhara Yoga teachers
return to refresh their understanding, while others dive
in for the first time to our unique teacher certification
courses. Long-time practitioners continue to step forward and commit deeply to the spiritual lineage through
initiations.
Inner strength that arises from a strong centre allows
the Ashram to create a light flexible structure for diverse
programming from teens to ecological groups, from
Taste of the Ashram lunch and yoga drop-ins to a
three-month intensive development program. We are
also extending externally through outreach workshops
in various cities and presentations at conferences, such as
the Parliament of World Religions. The Ashram is built

Going away on holiday in the autumn? Youre a student

moving away for school? Going away to work?
If that is you, and you are registered to vote in the
upcoming federal election on October 19, you can vote
beginning right now without delay at the Elections
Canada office in Nelson.
Advance polls normally used by voters planning to
be absent on election day will be over the Thanksgiving
weekend, and have a chance of being missed, given travel,
family obligations, etc. Another good reason to vote now.
If you are a new voter, you can also register to vote in
the same office. You will have to show your identification
with your current address and fill out a short form, and
you will then be given a special ballot to vote. The easiest
form of ID is the drivers licence, but there are numerous

To Explore The Trades
Julie-Claire Hamilton fully understands the challenges

faced when delving into what has traditionally been
known as a mans world. Though she has been plying her
trade for more than a decade, it hasnt always been easy on
the job site front lines for the journeyperson electrician.
As a woman in trades, I still encounter the old-school
attitude where some men wonder what you are doing on
the job, says Hamilton. You have to prove yourself even
that much more, but the mentality is changing and that
needs to happen with everyone. We are just as capable in
the trades and in some cases women can excel at them.
Now an electrical instructor at Selkirk College, Hamilton
has been charged with leading a special cohort through
an exploration of trades this fall. In partnership with the
Greater Trail Community Skills Centre, Selkirk College is
offering a special Trades Discovery Program for Women.
The 14-week program with a two-week job shadow component provides women the opportunity to check out many
different elements of the trades, get hands-on experience,
and gain exposure to a variety of work sites and employers.
The program runs October 26, 2015 to February 12,
2016 at the colleges Silver King Campus in Nelson. A few
years ago, Hamilton worked on a similar initiative called
Skilled Trades Exploratory Program (STEP) for women
where she taught the electrical portion of the program.
This time she will be leading students through the entire
scope with help from the Skills Centre and her peers at
Selkirk College in carpentry, welding, metal fabrication
and machinist/millwright.
Im excited about the possibilities in the trades and
the chance to share them with women, says Hamilton.
There are so many avenues to pursue and once you get
that ticket, the opportunities are endless.
The program will be split between Trail and Nelson with
the first three weeks in Trail and the shop portions in Nelson. Students will explore the trades with hands-on activities and exposure to actual work sites. They will learn
what academic skills are required if they want to pursue
trades training as well as what employers are looking for
in future workers. The class will also provide employable
skills in fall protection, confined space and forklift operations skills that are useful on many job sites. At the
conclusion of the program, participants will have a better
understanding of their individual strengths and possible
pathways for further exploration.
The tuition for the Trades Discovery Program for
Women is $800 and funding may be available for those
who are eligible by contacting Jaime Malcolm at the

How To Kick The Clutter Habit
How many of us really know every item thats sitting in

our closets? Research says only 35 per cent of Canadians
claim to get rid of clothing when they notice something
they dont want anymore. That means the rest of us could
be letting our pack rat tendencies get away on us!
Think beyond seasonal wardrobe changeovers; once
you discover that closet cleaning has a science to it, youll
find its easy to build it into a positive habit. Donating
your clothing is a great way to give back to the community, while also decluttering your life.
Here are some tips to tackle your closet without the
separation anxiety:
Focus: Cleaning out your entire wardrobe in one shot
can be overwhelming. Instead of waiting for clothes to
pile up, try focused purging. Tip out one drawer at a time,
or just try shoes and boots.
Favour: When deciding whether or not to part with
those perfect pastel pants, think about the last time you
wore them. If you cant put your finger on when they
last saw the light of day, its probably time someone else
enjoyed them.
Finalize: If all your clothes disappeared, what items
would you wish were right back in your closet if you
could replace only a few? Once you decide which items
are keepers, youll quickly be able to spot the ones you
can part with and donate. When youve made up your
mind, you can head to the clothing drop boxes in your
neighbourhood, like the bright red ones provided by the
Canadian Diabetes Association.

How To Report A Wildfire
High water temperatures and low stream flows have prompted a fishing closure in the southern Kootenay region.
River Fishing? Not Now!
The BC government has suspended angling in rivers

and streams of the southern Kootenay due to warm water
temperatures and low flows. Effective now through September 15, virtually all fishing is suspended in streams
and rivers in an area south of Nelson from below Lower
Arrow Lake in the west across to the Kootenay River east
of Cranbrook. We dont do closures very often or lightly,
says regional natural resources manager John Krebs. I
have not seen it like this before. I have been in the region
for 25 years, and there were some dry years in 1985 and
2003, but in terms of early high temperatures, we have
never had such a long hot spell that early in the season in
several decades. So it is really unusual.
Harvey Andrusak, a longtime Kootenay resident,
retired fisheries biologist and former director of fisheries for the province, says the necessity of the closure is a
reflection of how precious and important the fishery is.
The fish are the first ones to tell you there is a problem,
he says. They are a keystone species. He says anglers will
recognize the necessity of the closure. This has never
happened before, not in my lifetime, he says. Low flows,
high temperatures Kokanee Creek is the lowest I have
ever seen it, and the kokanee spawners coming into the
stream shortly could have some unusual mortality.
Andrew Wilson, president of the BC Freshwater Fishery Society, says warm water increases the stress placed
on fish by catch-and-release, the method used for the
majority of freshwater fishing in BC. They cant handle
the stress of the experience. With warm water you need
to eliminate incidental harm. By closing the fishery you
prevent mortality. This is the first time I can recall we
have had to shut down so many streams. Every year there
are a few the Kettle, the Horsefly but a region-wide
closure is unprecedented.
The Columbia River from the Keenleyside Dam to the
Washington state border and the Kootenay River from the
Brilliant Dam to the confluence with the Columbia are
exempt from the closure.

attended. The audience was very engrossed and many

questions from both adults and children were asked and
answered. We also set up a 10 hand-built Dobsonian so
people could see up close what we would be using for the
star-gazing session.
As the sky began to darken, we set two 10 Dobsonians
up in the campground playground field and spent time
showing Saturn to everyone. The rings were beautiful and
people became very excited with their first view through
the scopes.
As the sky got darker and Saturn disappeared behind a
tree, we started looking at other objects and tried to show
people at least one emission nebulae, planetary nebulae,
globular cluster, open cluster, double star, and galaxy. We
again explained what these were and pointed out where

each was in the sky. Some objects seen included M13, the
Andromeda and Whirlpool galaxies, the Ring, Dumbbell,
and Lagoon nebulae, Alberio, Mizar and Alcor, and the
golden double in Delphinius. People were given charts of
the current sky so they could identify the asterisms for
themselves later. All were very involved and asked great
questions; they also learned to focus the scopes and track
the objects.
Joanne Siderius, the naturalist at the park, loaned us
two milk cartons so the shorter children could reach the
eyepieces. Thanks, Joanne!!
The night was a great success and we viewed till after 11
pm when most of the people went back to camp.
