1- A massless piston/cylinder contains m kg of saturated liquid water at P1 (state 1). Initially
piston rests on two stops with the top surface open to the atmospheric pressure at P0> P1 . Heat is
added to cylinder until its volume doubles (state 2).
(a)
(b)

Find the initial and final volumes of the cylinder.

write the steps to show if water at state 2 is subcooled, saturated or superheated.

Assuming that the water at state 2 is superheated:

(c)
(d)
(e)
(f)

Find the final temperature inside the cylinder

Find the work done by the system during this process.
Find the heat transferred to the cylinder during the process.
draw the P-V diagrams for the entire process.

5- The cylinder/piston arrangement as shown in figure contains air at 200 kPa and 600 K (state 1).
Heat is transferred to the system and air expands to twice the initial volume (state 2). The piston is
then locked with a pin and heat is transferred from the system until it reaches a final temperature
of 600 K (state 3). Air is an ideal gas with constant (R = 0.287 kJ/kg-K and kJ/kg-K)
a)
List all known and unknown information as well as the assumptions that you may need to
solve the problem. Define the system and the boundary and the processes (1-2 and 2-3).
b)
Find temperature at state 2 (T2) and pressure at state 2 and state 3 (P2 and P3).
c)
Find the specific work and specific heat transfer for both processes.
d)
Draw p-v and T-v diagram for the system going through both processes.
