Urinary & Reproductive System Vocab List

1. Endometriosis- disorder that occurs when cells from the lining of the womb
(uterus) grow in other areas of the body
2. Epididymis- A long, narrow, convoluted tube, part of the spermatic duct
system, that lies on the posterior aspect of each testicle, connecting it to
the vas deferens.
3. FSH (follicle Stimulating hormone)- released by the anterior pituitary
gland, stimulates production of eggs in women and sperm in men and a
hormone called estradiol during the first half of the menstrual cycle.
4. Hydrocele- an abnormal collection of fluid within the testes
5. LH (Luteinizing hormone)- hormone produced by the anterior pituitary that
triggers ovulation
6. Menses-The monthly floe of bloody fluid from the endometrium. The time
during which a woman is menstruating
7. Polycystic kidney disease-several inherited disorders causing cysts to
form in the kidneys and other organs leading to destroyed kidney tissue
and function
8. Micturition- Act of urination; voiding of the urinary bladder
9. Vas deferens- they transport sperm from the epididymis in anticipation of
ejaculation.
10. Gametes- is a cell that fuses with another cell during fertilization
(conception) in organisms
11. Menstruation-the actual shedding of the endometrium
12. Zygot- a fertilized egg
13. Mammary glands-milk producing glands housed in the breasts
14. Ovum-Female reproductive cell
15. HCG(Human chorionic gonadotropin)-Hormone produced by embryonic
cells soon after implantation that maintains the corpus luteum
16. Mastitis- Inflammation of the breasts
17. Nocturia-frequent urination at night
18. Urethra- thin muscular tube lined with several different types of epithelium
along its length where urine travels to from the bladder
19. Nephron- functional unit of the kidney
20. Glomerulus- is a network (tuft) of capillaries that performs the first step of
filtering blood
21. Urea-The main nitrogenous substance found in urine. The amount
excreted in urine is directly related to the amount of protein consumed
22. Ureter-a tube of smooth muscle lined with mucus that carries urine from
each kidney to the single urinary bladder
23. Placenta Previa-Placenta grows over the cervix
24. Kidney- bean shaped organ located in the superior dorsal abdominal
cavity between the peritoneum and the back muscles
25. Renal Hilum- Indentation in the kidneys where renal arteries bring blood
into the kidneys to be filtered

26. Glomerular filtrate- The material filtered from the blood into the glomerular
capsule
27. Creatinine-A waste product produced by the muscle metabolism that
should be largely eliminated by the kidney
28. Nephritis-General term that refers to an inflammation of the kidney
29. Vagina-Smooth muscle tube with a mucous membrane lining,
approximately 10 centimeters long

Prostate- A chestnut gland that secretes a slightly alkaline fluid that
forms part of the seminal fluid.
