CPRT revives PT week; joins world celebration

After losing its spot in the school activities for the past three years, the College of
Physical and Respiratory Therapy (CPRT) arise for the comeback of their Physical
Therapy Week celebration in accordance to the 18 th World PT Day on September 812 with the theme, Movement for Health, Fit for the Future.
Future physical therapists of the department shared their acquired learning
experience in the field of PT rehabilitation to Lormanians. A week-long celebration
was prepared featuring an educational exhibit, open house tour in PT laboratory,
free PT treatment, and BMI and scoliosis screening.
The educational exhibit displayed traction designs of different kinds. It is described
through their use and importance for those who have fracture and nerve
impingement secondary to injury.
Trivias related to the PT practice and basic informations regarding the human body
were given a corner for students awareness and supplements. Common medical
conditions handled by physical therapists were also given emphasize through
illustrations and images. Some of these diseases were cerebrovascular accident
(stroke), multiple sclerosis, Parkinsons disease and traumatic brain injury.
At the same time, a free PT treatment was offered to Lormanians at the school
quadrangle by 4th year PT students. Students with symptoms of minor pain and
injury were assisted to try PT modalities. Backache and muscle pain were treated
with TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation). TENS is a medical method
of relieving pain without drugs. It uses electricity to improve circulation and
oxygenation of blood. Other types of electrical modalities were also used during the
treatment such as ES (Electrical Stimulation) and FES (Functional Electrical
Stimulation).
In addition, screening for scoliosis and BMI was also rendered. Scoliosis is the lateral
curvature of the spinal column. Assessment of this condition is according to the
body posture, structural alignment and present deformity of the shoulder and trunk.
Candidate patient is seen to have a scapula higher than the other one. BMI was also
calculated for students reference to health status.
Another hit during the event was the open house tour in the PT laboratory at room -.
The department decided to open the lab to the public because of the peoples
demand for a different educational experience. It also aimed to inform the students
on the course outline taken by the PT students.
The lab houses PT modalities, equipment, assistive devices, orthoses, and
prostheses that are displayed inside. Some of them are IRR, black box, hydrocollator
tank, crutches, braces and artificial legs.

At the human anatomy station, it stars the skeleton and muscle man used mainly
for gross anatomy subject. Actual bones from the human body were separated by
parts for everyones close observation of its structures.
Meanwhile, the main attraction during the tour was the face-to-face encounter to
the two cadavers. The experience gave thrill to the visitors because most of them
were first timers and afraid of the dead body in front of them.
The cadavers were used by 3rd and 4th year PT students while tackling the human
anatomy and neuroanatomy. They were given the chance to dissect the body and
identify the orientation of the muscles together with the bones, arteries and nerves.
Internal organs of previous cadavers were also presented like the heart, liver,
kidneys and the human brain.
Other departments of Lorma also took part in the celebration through competitions
prepared by CPRT. A poster-slogan making contest was conducted to participants
with artistry and creativity in illustration. Subject of the art contest focused on this
years celebration. Likewise, PT-Kan quiz bee competition was also organized to test
the mental capacities of Lormanians. Questionnaires were taken from basic
anatomy and physiology.
The College of Pharmacy clinched the award for the winning piece in the posterslogan contest. A cash prize and gold medal was awarded to being the artist of the
artwork. of and of were also recognized as 2 nd and 3rd placers, respectively.
Quizzers from the College of Nursing emerged as champion in the PT-kan quiz bee
after consistently leading the 3-way battle rounds of the game. -, -, and received
the gold medals and cash prize while contenders from the College of and College
of also shares the victory as 2nd and 3rd placers, respectively.
Extending the PT week to reach another goal on another perspective, Dean Bernard
Tayaban Jr., together with the faculty and 5 th year interns, conducted a medical
mission in Sta. Rosario, San Juan on September 27.
This projects main objective is to introduce and heighten the awareness of the role
of PT in the community especially to places with less access to healthcare services.
Medical doctors from Lorma Medical Center initiated the medical services offered
during the mission. People enjoyed the free consultation and medications given.
However, patients with underlying health problems were referred to more intensive
check-up on the nearest hospital for farther evaluation and treatment.
Prior to that, CPRT also organized vital signs and basic life support training to
Barangay Health Workers (BHW) in the community. They were taught to be an
effective health advocates and first aiders through vital signs monitoring, CPR and

disaster-preparedness education. After the course, three BP apparatus were donated


for the application of their learned experience.
We plan to improve and enhance the programs and activities under the college,
says Dean Tayaban. He continues, By bringing back our PT week celebration in
Lorma, we call it as a great chance to give back our blessings the past years and
impart the PTs significance in the society.
Moreover, Tayaban also stressed that the finished community service is part of the
departments mission. The medical mission aimed to increase the capabilities of
BHWs and other members of the community on health-related skills and prepare
them to conquer sudden disasters trhat may risk their life.
