ENGLISH

Late Policy
The overall goal of the English Departments late policy is to encourage
self-awareness and good communicate habits.
Daily Homework & Quizzes
Late homework will not be collected. The English Department does not
offer extensions or grant partial credit for homework.
Papers, Projects, and Tests
A. Extensions will be considered regardless of the reason depending on the
students ability to do the following:
-Communicate with their teacher before the deadline
-Write a brief proposal that lays out a new proposed deadline, the
reason for the request, any additional assistance that may be required, and
any
projects or paper that might interfere with the new deadline
B. If a student fails to meet a large project or paper deadline and does not
communicate with their teacher before its due date, a grade cap of 85% will
be applied to the late assignment. This does not mean that the student will
automatically receive an 85%, but rather it is the highest grade possible for
late work. To receive any credit, students must respond to a teachers
inquiry (this may be via email, phone, or in-person) about the assignment
within 48 hours of the missed deadline.
C. If a student has been granted an extension and fails to meet that
deadline then section B goes into effect.

SCIENCE

Students who are present on the day that an assignment is due and do not
have it completed may turn in the assignment late and earn 50% of the
credit available for the assignment, regardless of the number of days it is
late, up until the day of the exam for that unit. After the exam, all missing
assignments will become a 0.
Science grading in general:
In the science classes at ESLA, students will typically complete the following
types of assignments and assessments over the course of the year:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.

Classwork
Homework
Quizzes
Exams
In-Class Labs
Lab Reports
Projects/Presentations

Category weights across the department generally follow these breakdowns:

1. Guided work
(HW, CW, Labs)
15-40%
2. Independent Assessments (Q, Ex, Rep, Lab)
35-60%
3. Final Exam
10-20%
There is wiggle room in the weighting appropriate for grade level or class,
but most of the work that would be turned in late on a regular basis is
homework. With the frequency and weighting of homework, it would be
impossible for a student to fail a course for the sole reason of late homework.
The student will not be able to earn an A with a habit of turning in late work,
but one or two occasional late assignments will not prevent them from an A if
all other work is of good quality.
Specific example: physics (see grading scales, page 2)
Thinking about the number of classwork and lab grades I typically have, I
would say that homework is approximately 15% of my students average.
Homework is a completion grade. If they completed every assignment late
they would only incur about an 8% penalty on their average from the
lateness to a maximum of 15% if they never did homework at all. Now, late
work may lead to other effects on quizzes/exams, but those may be retaken
or corrected. If the student has more than 50% of the assignment completed,
I typically have them take the 3/5 or 4/5 instead of turning it in late. They
only take the late grade if less than 50% of the assignment is done at the
time that it is due.

Grading:
Your course average will be calculated in the following way:
20% Guided Work Classwork, Homework, and In-Class Labs
60% Assessments Lab Reports, Quizzes, and Exams
20% Final Exam
Classwork and Homework
Each classwork and homework will be worth 5 points where a
5 = CW on task and productive
HW completed assignment; worked through to any answer
4 = CW mostly on task/productive
HW attempted solution; worked some concepts and math
3 or 2 = CW minimally on task
HW partially completed; problems missing or not attempted
1 or 0 as necessary

HISTORY
Sixth Grade:
Homework:
Homework will be a completion grade; no late work will be considered. After three
incomplete homework assignments, the students parents will be contacted. If a
student anticipates the need for an extension for a larger assignment, it must be
requested in advance.
Larger Assessment:
If a major assignment is late, an email will be sent to his/her parents, the student
must meet with the teacher to arrange a second deadline, and the highest possible
grade will be a B+. If the student misses a second deadline, the process may be
repeated, but the highest possible grade will be a C+.
Seventh to Eleventh Grades:
For assignments graded on a letter scale or percentage scale, unexcused late
assignments will be docked 1/3 of a letter grade per day late, including days when
class does not meet.
For homework assignments graded on a 1 5 or 1 3 scale, late assignments will be
docked .5 of a point per day late.
For formative assessments graded in a binary way, late assignments will receive a
0.

ART
My late policy is simple... once you get the hang of it.
Watson, you can stick to this model (it works) or please reply all if you wish
to deviate from this so Jamie and I both know your plan.
Homework is not graded. (Homework is usually to watch a video or read an
article.)
Rather, a journal prompt or a sketch based on the homework is completed
in the first 5 minutes of class. This assignment is graded as finished (2),
partial (1), or not completed (0) and these points are added into the
student's sketchbook grade.
Sketchbooks are collected and graded 3 times a term. Students know a
week in advance when that date is so they can prepare accordingly.
Whatever state the sketchbook is in the day it is collected is the grade they
receive. No late passes.
Larger projects are turned in on a rolling basis. Students have a window of
a week to turn in each larger assignment. However, students may not move

onto the next project until the first one is complete. Usually the motivation of
the rest of the class moving on will kick the slow mover into gear. After the
week ends, a class critique is held. Although the student will continue to be
able to work on the project until the portfolio is due, the student's critique
grade will suffer if there isn't enough work done on the project. (This penalty
is clearly outlined in the critique rubric.)
