Below are testimonials from the current youth and adult Co-chairs of YAC
– we hope you get involved!!!

During the winter of my eighth grade year, I went to a weekend-long ski

conference (Con) in Augusta with some other kids from my church and
other churches around Maine. I had a good time skiing, but the
conference wasn't the amazing experience that my friends had told me it
would be. On Sunday morning, as I was walking out the door to leave, a
young woman put her hand on my shoulder saying "hey". I turned around,
worried that I had forgotten something. She hugged me and said, "Thanks
for coming." That's all. Something awoke within me and it changed my
life. For the first time that I could remember, I had felt completely safe. I
decided that I might go to another Con after all. At the spring conference, I
volunteered to be on the committee that plans and runs the Cons. The first
and second years that I was on it, I was just there, sometimes expressing
my opinion and other times just watching. Now I am the senior youth
officer on the committee. I run the meetings, facilitate decisions, and help
to train new members. Cons, and the planning of them, are the most
important thing in my life right now. They take priority over shows, friends,
and even homework if need be, because if just one more person can feel
as safe as I did, or discover themselves like I did, then all the time and
energy is worth it.

From Rick Blake, '09-'10 YAC Youth Co-chair

Since I became involved in YAC and going to and planning youth

Conferences (Cons), the culture of Cons has changed quite a bit – they
have certainly been a work in progress as many interested youth and
adults have worked towards safety for all and fun for all in a spiritual
context. I have been very proud to be a part of that work, last year as the
adult At-large on YAC, this year as adult Co-chair of YAC. I hope you will
consider becoming a part of YAC as it moves forward with the District to
bring a variety of youth programming to Maine.
