TASK 1 Project a Shapefile from Geographic to Projected Coordinate System

1. Folder Connection to Chapter 2

Start ArcCatalog, make connection to the Chapter 2 database.

Right-click idll.shp in the Catalog Tree and select Properties. The XY Coordinate System
tab in the Shapefile Properties dialog shows the name to be unknown

2. Define the coordinate system for idll.shp onto NAD 1927

Select Chapter 2 database for current workspace on Environment dialog

Define coordinate system for idll.shp based on NAD 1927.

3. Project idll.shp to the IDTM coordinate system.

Provide information for New Projected Coordinate System dialog.

4. Transform coordinate system from NAD 1927 to NAD 1983.

5. Verify idll.shp has been successfully projected to idtm.shp

Q1. The procedure to complete Task 1:

a. Folder Connection
Start ArcCatalog, use Connect to Folder Toolbar to make connection to the Chapter 2
database.
b. Define coordinate system for idll.shp
Click ArcToolbox window. Right-click ArcToolbox and select Environment. Select the
Chapter 2 database for current workspace in the Environment Setting dialog.
Double-click the Define Projection tool in the Data Management Tools/ Projections and
Transformations Toolset. For Input Feature Class select idll.shp
Click the button for coordinate system. In Spatial Reference Properties dialog, click
Select. Double-click Geographic Coordinate Systems, North America, and NAD 1927.prj.
Click OK
c. Project idll.shp to the IDTM coordinate system
Double-click the Project tool in the Data Management Tools/ Projections and
Transformations/ Feature Toolset. For Input Feature Class, select idll.shp and specify
idtm.shp for the Output Feature Class.
Click the button for the output coordinate system to open Spatial Reference Properties
dialog. Click the New dropdown arrow and select Projected. For the Name in the New
Projected Coordinate System dialog enter idtm.
In the Projection frame select Tranverse_Mercator from the Name dropdown list. Enter
the following parameter values : 2500000 for False_Easting, 1200000 for
False_Northing, -114 for Central_Meridian, 0.9996 for Scale_Factor, and 42 for
Latitude_Of_Origin. Linear Unit in meter.
For Geographic Coordinate System , click Select then double-click North America, and
NAD 1983.prj. Click Finish.
Click Save as in Spatial Reference Properties dialog, and save the projection file as
idtm83.prj in the Chapter 2 workspace. Dismiss the Spatial Reference Properties dialog.
In Project Dialog, click Geographic Transformations dropdown arrow and select
NAD_1927_To_NAD_1983_NADCON. Click OK.

TASK 2 Import a Coordinate System

1. Define the coordinate system for stationsll.shp by importing information on idll.shp
Stationsll.shp has an unknown geographic coordinate system

Define the coordinate system for stationsll.shp by importing information on idll.shp

Dana Mutiara Kusumawardani

2. Project stationstm.shp to IDTM coordinates system by importing the projection information

on idtm.shp
Click Import in the Spatial References Properties dialog, add idtm.shp

Click
the
Geographic
Tranformation
NAD_1927_to_NAD_1983_NADCON

dropdowns

arrow

and

select

102322603

stationstm.shp has been projected onto the same coordinate system as idtm.shp

Q2. What I have done in step 1 was to define the coordinate system for stationsll.shp
onto the same coordinate system as idll.shp using Import in Spatial Reference Properties.
The procedures are:
double-click Define Projection tool, select stationsll.shp for the input feature class.
Click the button for the coordinate system, click Import and add idll.shp. Dismiss the
dialog.

TASK 3 Project a Shapefile by Using a Predefined Coordinate System

1. Edit coordinate system of snow.txt onto NAD 1983.
Right-click snow.txt and select Display XY Data.

Click Edit button and Select NAD 1983 coordinate system.

2. Project snow.txt Events and save the output to snowutm83.shp

Snow.txt Events now is added to ArcMap

Dana Mutiara Kusumawardani

Project snow.txt Events and save the output to snowutm83.shp

Q3. Geographic Transformation wasnt asked in step 2 because snow.txt Events is

based on the same geographic coordinate system as snowut83.shp, both of them is based on
NAD83.

TASK 4 Convert from One Coordinate System to Another

1. Change coordinate system of Task 3&4 from GCS North America 1983 to NAD 1983 UTM
Zone 11N
The current coordinate system of Task 3&4 is GCS North America 1983

Change coordinate system of Task 3&4 to NAD 1983 UTM Zone 11N

2. Add idtm.shp to Task 3&4

Dana Mutiara Kusumawardani

102322603

3. Project idtm.shp to the UTM coordinate system and create an output as idutm83.shp by
using Select button in Spatial References Properties dialog

4. Idutm83.shp has been projected to the UTM grid system.

Dana Mutiara Kusumawardani

102322603

Q4. We can use Import instead of Select in step 3. The procedures are :

Double-click the Project tool

Select idtm for the input feature class, specify idutm83.shp for the output feature class
Click the button for the output coordinate system.
Click import in the Spatial References Properties dialog,
Double-click snowutm83.shp
Click OK to dismiss the dialog.

CHALLENGE TASK
1. Reproject idroads.shp with the correct false easting and false northing values
idroads.shp is projected onto IDTM but has the wrong false easting and false northing
values

use Project tool and the IDTM informationfrom Task 1 to reproject idroads.shp

Dana Mutiara Kusumawardani

102322603

2. Reproject mtroads.shp to the IDTM and name the output mtroads_idtm.shp

Dana Mutiara Kusumawardani

102322603

3. Verify idroads2.shp and mtroads_idtm.shp have the same spatial references information.
