2. GLOBAL TRADE - KEY FINDINGS

France was one of the leaders in the global pigeon pea trade. In 2014, France
exported 3 thousand tonnes of pigeon peas totaling 972 thousand USD, a
remarkable 75% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was the
Netherlands, where it supplied 50% of its total pigeon pea exports in value
terms, accounting for the lions share of the Netherlandss total imports.
From 2012 to 2014, France was a net exporter of pigeon peas. Over this
period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. In physical terms
this difference was more pronounced.
Sri Lanka and Peru were among the other main global suppliers of pigeon peas
in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporter from 2012 to 2014 was
Belgium (+39% per year).
In 2014, France had only 4 trading partners: the Netherlands, Germany,
Belgium and Italy. The share of Belgium illustrated severe negative dynamics (78 percentage points) from 2012 to 2014.
