Chapter 1

What is Astrology

From the outset it has been pointed out that this book is not intended to teach the whole Science or Art of Palmistry or Astrology, but to furnish the student with sufficient and fair knowledge of both arts so as to enable him to act as palmist and astrologer at one and the same time.

It is important, therefore, to let the beginner as well as the advanced student of both subjects be acquainted with both arts and to simplify the methods adopted in their practice so as to make it easy for him to understand and apply both the arts without crowding his brain with unnecessary information which might encumber his pursuits or impede his progress.

Definition

An established fact is that when a girl or boy is born, the aspect of the Heavens at her or his time of birth impresses its seal upon her or his destiny, but this is not its only influence; after the original impetus, the Stars continue to exert their power till the end of life. Astrology is, therefore, the science or art of determining and fixing the relation and influence of the heavenly bodies, especially those of the Solar System, upon our daily life on earth. This relation and influence is illustrated by the following:-

i.In spite of the fact that there are in the heavens numerous bodies scattered through space which rival the sun in real splendour in both bulk and mass, and whatever may be the importance of the Sun viewed merely as one of the bodies which travel through space, there can be no hesitation in asserting how immeasurably his influence on the earth surpasses that of all the other bodies in the Universe. Verily he is the source of our life itself.

ii.Sun spot cycles and their coincidence with certain epidemic diseases, or types of weather on our Planet.

iii.The intrinsic importance of the Moon may be small as compared with other celestial bodies but in the economy of our earth the Moon has played and still plays a part second only in importance to that of the Sun. In the history of Science, the Moon occupies an exceptional position. The Law of Gravity is one of the greatest discoveries that Science has witnessed.

iv.If the Moon was suddenly struck out of existence, the maritime commerce of the world would be thrown into confusion. The Moon is the principal agent in causing the daily ebb and flow of tides, which are of the utmost service in navigation. Planets and stars are not less important in navigation by land, sea and air.

v.The obedience of all creatures to Natural Laws ruled by the movements of the different planets and stars, etc., causing the different natural phenomena.

Actually there are six principal divisions of Astrology as given below:—

i.Natal Astrology which is applied to individuals,

ii.Mundane Astrology which deals with groups or nations, their politics and economics, etc.

iii.Horary Astrology which is devoted to answering private or general questions of immediate moment,

iv.Astro-Meteorology which deals with weather forecasts,

v.Astro-Therapeutics used for healing purposes, and

vi.Agricultural Astrology which deals with farming, plantations, etc.

In our present study of both the arts we are only concerned with item (i) above. Almost every book on Astrology deals with that item only; a few books with Nos. 1, 2 and 5.

In order to predict the destiny and fortune or luck by means of Astrology the Astrologer has to cast what is technically known as the Horoscope chart on which he fixes the positions of the different planets together with their relations, aspects etc., to each other at the time of birth. Drawing this chart is a very tedious and complicated business. It depends upon one single information as already mentioned, i.e., the birth data.

In our opinion which is purely personal, this single information is neither sufficient nor reliable. The reasons are many:—

i.No person is quite sure of his or her time of birth to the exact minute upon which the whole horoscope depends, bearing in mind that a slight error of five minutes makes a lot of difference and leads to wrong calculations, resulting in a horoscope very far from being accurate.

ii.It has been the custom of many parents, especially in the East, which embodies the majority of the human race, to register their newly born babies one or two or more days after the actual day of birth. In many cases no birth record is available. Naturally, the Astrologer under such circumstances, where no birth data is available, is incapable of casting a true horoscope. In such cases the student will be thankful to this science because it deals with such cases.

iii.Ancient Indians who were very negligent in keeping birth records had established a very accurate system which when adopted, enables the student to dispense with any birth data as will be explained later. In fact, that method of old is more reliable than any based on birth information. In this regard a lot of books were written by our sheers on this issue. The books like Sakand Sarirkam, Samudrik Shastra and a book of this modern age Lal Kitab were weritten to give right birth data to the the Astro-Palimstry students.

iv.We cannot deny the fact that most of us share a general haziness about the exact time of birth to the minute.

v.Even in cases where the birth data given to the Astrologer are very accurate and correct, they cannot be relied upon because such data cannot be considered the personal and private property of any one person only as more than eighty thousand babies are born every minute all over the world. In order to be more logical and practical in our argument and discussion let us cite one example in support of our theory. Take for example a large city like Delhi or Mumbai where more than four or five babies are born every minute. Those newly born babies are born of parents who widely differ in their social, financial, physical and educational standards. Suppose that those four innocent babies whom we will call Nishant, Prashant, Nishtha and Vedant were born on the 21 February, 2010 at 21:13hours. According to Astrological rules and knowledge the required information for casting the horoscope is quite correct; but the inadequacy of Astrology is that any horoscope cast for any of these four babies will be good for the remaining three. In other words, the lives, character, talents, destinies, fortune, etc., of all the four babies will be carbon copies as shown by the horoscope. In other words, the lives, character, talents, careers, destinies, fortunes, and misfortunes of the four babies will be identical to some extent. The following features as interpreted by the Signs of the Zodiac where the aspects and positions of the planet are shown at the given time of birth will be the same for the whole group, there being no difference whatsoever between the prince and the pauper or those born in castles and those born in slums and no difference between male or female. The feature referred to above are:— Personality, fortune, property, kindred, inheritance, health, marriage, law suits, foreign influence, profession, friends, hopes, ambitions, enemies, children, business, etc. This similarity in everything connected with lif e sounds ridiculous and unreasonable.

What actually the horoscope can present is a general picture of temperament, character, mental and physical makeup.

Undoubtedly, there are thousands and thousands of people of both sexes who have more or less one or two or more traits and talents, but the fact remains that there are no two persons in the whole world whose lives are a duplicate, not even twins or triplets who are born from the same mother at the same time.

Every single human is distinguished by his personal idiosyncrasies, opinions, talents, tastes, etc., which are clearly shown in his hands, traits which are truly considered his sole and private property and the sole reliable source for all correct predictions.

From the date of birth both the sciences learns the main structure upon which everybody is prepared to build his career and character based on his merits and potentialities. Any group or number of persons born under the same Sign of the Zodiac resemble as many houses whose foundations or plant are made by the same architect, but whose owners differ in mentality, wealth, ability, taste, etc. One owner may build his house of the best materials, a second owner may use cheap materials, and the third owner may engage thirdrate carpenters and masons. One owner builds his house on proper correct methods, another builds it in haste expecting its collapse at any moment, while a third is too lazy to go on and complete the building. One owner paints his house white, the second green and the third neglects to paint. Those are true and exact examples of our lives; one squanders his money and energy and finishes in a work-house while another use his brains and lives comfortably. The man is the Architect of his own fortune is a very true and wise maxim.

Once the student is aware of the back ground of character, etc., as prescribed by Astrology, he will then examine the hands from which he will be able to decide how the applicant is building his fortune as will be shown in due course.

vi.To cast the Horoscope, a special chart or map is made, showing in detailed accuracy, at the alleged date of birth, the exact positions of the planets together with their conjunction, conjunction, sextile (an aspect of 60 °-one sixth of circle), semi-sextile, square, semisquare, quintile (an aspect of 72 °-one fifth of a circle), biquintile, trine and opposition, which items are of utmost importance because upon their accuracy the whole subject of astrological prophecy depends. In order to fix those planets and calculate their aforementioned jumbo-mumbo, every single book on Astrology refers the student to a wonderful booklet or brochure called the Ephemeris, which contains for each day of the year the exact location, longitude, latitude, declination, etc., of the different heavenly bodies including the planets.

As far as the authors know the best Ephemeris are only published in India, England, and Germany. They are based on certain mathematical and astronomical calculations, again based on G.M.T. There is no need to say that students living outside these countries will find their job rather tedious in converting their local time into G.M.T. A single error in the conversion, in adding, subtracting, etc., would naturally be disastrous. It is really wondered how the ancient Indians managed to cast horoscopes in those good old days, without the aid of any ephemeris. It is remarkable to note that those old sages did know their job quite well as their prophecies or predictions were amazingly true.

As a matter of fact, these pioneers of Astrology confined their practice to mundane prediction and agricultural forecasts only. They harnessed their knowledge for advising kings about wars, or giving advice on State affairs, or choosing suitable sites for building new cities or undertaking of big enterprises.

Private or natal predictions concerning personal affairs such as marriage, business, travel, health, etc., were achieved through totally different methods such as the Science of Sound and Number(Swar and Ank Vidya) which is based upon the vibrations and numerical values of the alphabet.

vii.Those Planets upon whose positions and relevant relations and aspects, during the time of birth, the prediction depends, do not remain stationary pinned to their places for ever; every planet remains in every Sign or House for a certain period and then moves on to the next Sign, and then to the third, and so on till it circulates the whole Circle of the Zodiac; for example, the Planet Saturn remains in every Sign for 8,989 days; Venus stays 18 days & 8 hours only. Mercury 7 days & 7 hours, Mars 57 days & 4 hours, etc. It is, therefore, beyond the powers of any human brain to conceive how any Planet which remains in a certain place for a few days has the power to control our health, wealth, career, etc., for the whole span of human life of 60 or more years.

viii.Owing to the daily movement of the Planets around the Zodiac, changing their position and relation accordingly, and in view of the importance of these changes, it is evident that in order to obtain accurate results, it is imperative to enter the required corrections and amendments on the horoscope chart every now and then, following those planetary changes which are the main cause of all our pleasure and sorrow, comfort and discomfort, fortune and misfortune, health and sickness, and all our ups and downs in life. For the above reasons, instructions or directions for casting any astrological horoscope have been purposely omitted from this book.

Chapter 2

WHAT IS PALMISTRY

Palmistry is the Science or Art of revealing character, talents, careers, and events of life by examining the hands

and their various parts and lines.

To avoid repetition, it is not intended to teach this Palmistry in this work. The aim of this book is to furnish to the student a fair knowledge of the subject so as to enable him to learn and practice both sciences easily.

Indeed, hand-reading is the key to life’s events as governed by one’s own destiny, mind and will; and as influenced by different circumstances and environments. Palmistry shows how every human being conducts and directs his life through his talents and disposition and what events are in store for him and whether the said events are the direct outcome of h i s behaviour or circumstances which are beyond his power to resist such as illnesses or sudden accidents.

Dr. F. W. Jones, D.sc ., M.B.B.S. (London) writes in his book-The Principles of Anatomy as seen in the Hands-is follows

MAN’ S PLACE IN NATURE IS LARGELY WRIT UPON HIS HAND.

Mammalia such as monkeys, apes, mice, etc., possess hands which are only considered prehensive paws. The perfect development of the band is only found in man.

A glance at everything around us, at home, office, the theatre, etc., will explain the value of the hand in our daily lives. There is nothing in which the hand of man does not play a great part.

The hand being the mirror of the brain is illustrated by the following facts:—

A careful glance at Figs: 1 & 2 will show the wide difference between both hand-prints in shape, form, size and behaviour of Main Lines, etc. Fig. 1 is the hand-print of a feebleminded person, 32 years old.

The hand is comparatively small for his age; it looks dull and awkward; the Main Lines are wavy and disturbed. Fig. 2 is the hand-print of a mentally well-balanced man of the same age. It looks healthy with its symmetrical and wellproportioned Main Lines and fingers.

The first hand reflects the clumsy trend and disturbed mental faculties of its owner, while the second hand indicates a reasonably stable mentality and a normal healthy mind.

Proofs are not lacking to demonstrate the close relations between the brain and the hand. The following proofs are quoted for the student’s satisfaction:—

i.The human mute who is naturally deprived of the powers of speech and hearing uses his hands to convey his thoughts, desires and whatever may be going through his head.

ii.Compare the fine smooth hand of a lady together with her fine emotions and delicate actions with those of the rough hands of a vulgar labourer and his rough temperament and coarse behaviour. The texture of the skin of both the lady’s and the labourer’s hands discloses the quality of their brains; the lady’s brain and mind are supple and good; the labourer’s are stiff and hard.

iii.Idiots or feeble minded people who lack sufficient will power possess small weak thumbs which in Palmistry fix the quality and volume of will power, reason and determination. An excellent specimen is seen in babies six or seven months old. These happy beings are totally lacking will power; it is always noticed, therefore, that their thumbs are either hidden in their mouths or shut inside their closed palms. When the baby grows up and his mental powers awake, demonstrating his wishes, his thumb assumes its normal posture and is never out of sight. In case, where the baby after the age of two or three years, continues to suck his thumb, he will grow with deficient will-power. Sucking the thumb renders it feeble, and a feeble thumb is a sure sign of insufficient self-control and hesitation, ending in impaired mentality. In some cases the thumb stops growing at the age of seven or eight years and remains deformed through-out life; this means idiocy and a weak mind.

iv.The palm of the hand contains the largest number of nerves which are directly connected with the brain. It is remarkable to examine the hands of nervous people; they are full of mixed and intercepted lines. The hand resembles an entangled net (Fig. 3). The mind of nervous people responds quickly to their surroundings and emotions; all what they hear or see influence them and they are easily aroused or excited by different agencies which are ultimately recorded in their hands in the shape of mixed lines.

An established fact is that there are no two hands which are of the same identical pattern, not even those of twins, neither the right nor left hands of any living person. Every human Destiny as disclosed by the hands necessarily differs from the rest. Every one of us has his own tastes, whims character, talents, etc., which differ from those of our neighbours and other members of our family, friends, etc. It is Palmistry that tells of this difference together with its subsequent result upon career, luck and the whole life.

Astrology helps the student to draw a general sketch of character and tendencies which are shared by multitudes of people born under the same Sign of the Zodiac, irrespective of sex, race, or social standard. Palmistry puts every human being in his proper place. Naturally, any group of men or women sharing the same qualities or talents widely differs in quality and quantity of these items. This difference in quality and quantity of character and talents is responsible for the wide gap between careers, fortunes, success, and failure, recognized in the lives of people born in the same Sign. This difference can be easily fixed and limited by examining the hands.

On examining the hands of different people, born in the same House, the student will notice the difference of quality and quantity in character, temperament, talents, etc., from the behaviour of the Main Lines, size and shape of the ruling Mounts and other parts of the hands.

The destiny and career of many people are influenced by foreign motives or factors such as living in foreign lands, marrying foreigners, dealing with overseas concerns or companies, etc. It will be difficult for Palmistry to recognise such people. People born under some Signs of the Zodiac, such as the Leo, Scorpion, Sagittarius, etc. are influenced by certain foreign elements. Once the student of this art is aware of this Astrological fact, he will carefully examine the hands for the relevant proper Signs or marks confirming this conclusion.

Another important item which Palmistry cannot understand without the help of Astrology is that there are some people who usually look restless and do not like to remain in the same job or surroundings for a long lime. They have an inherent urge for change. As Astrology is aware of such type of men, it will be very easy for the student of this science with this astrological knowledge, to notice in their hands the continual change in the Line of Fate and other important Lines.

It is not sufficient for the man who practises Palmistry and Astrology to predict fortune and fate and stop at that, believing that his duty has been duly fulfilled. No, after being acquainted with the applicant’s assets and liabilities he has to extend to him reasonable and good advice.

Through pride, self-deceit or fear of criticism, the majority of mankind do not confess to their weak or wrong character; it is the duty of the practitioner to instil faith, selfconfidence, reliance and moral courage in the minds and hearts of all men and women in order to help them get rid of their defects and guide them to the proper ways of going through life successfully utilizing their talents and chances to the full.

Chapter 3

THE ZODIAC & ITS SIGNS OR HOUSES

(A) The Solar Family

The heavenly bodies which deal with this science are the Planets Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, the Moon, the Sun and Mars.

There is a wide difference between a Star and a Planet:

i.The Planet can be recognised by the steady radiance of its light as compared to the incessant twinkling of the Star.

ii.The Star preserves its relative position, while the Planet is always moving; hence, it is called with propriety a Planet which means ‘Wanderer’, because it is necessarily moving from one part of the heavens to another.

iii.The Star shines by its own light and is not indebted to the Sun; every Planet owes its light to the Sun; were the Sun to be obscured, the planets would also disappear from view.

The fact that the planets shine by the Sun’s light points at once to the similarity between them and the earth.

The Sun presides over a large family whose members are dependent on it. Their dimensions are suitably proportioned to their subordinate positions. The nearest Planet to the earth is Venus. Its size is nearly equal to that of the Earth. Look to the west at Sunset at the spot where the departing Sunbeams still linger, and you will often see the lovely evening Star shining forth. The next is Jupiter, the third Saturn, and then follow Mars and Mercury. There are two or three other Planets, viz., Uranus, Neptune and Pluto whose distance from the Sun is so great and their motion is so slow that their influence upon individuals can barely be detected. In fact, these planets only influence mudain affairs like new discoveries, inventions, wars, etc. They have been, therefore, omitted from this book. They have not the slightest connection

with Palmistry or Natal Astrology. Unlike the other Planets, they are not represented in the hands which contain only seven Mounts, one Mount for each Planet. Our book is concerned only with individual destinies and fortunes and has nothing to do with political or financial affairs pertaining to nations or countries.

Around the central luminary (Fig.4), there are drawn nine circles which sufficiently illustrate the orbits in which the different planets, including Neptune and Pluto, move together, with the time each planet takes to complete its circuit. Table 1 shows their distances from the Sun, the periods of revolution, and speed per mile per second, together with their volume as compared to the Earth.

(B) The Zodiac

The Zodiac is actually a pictorial representation of the apparent orbital paths taken by the Planets; a kind of belt across the Universe divided into twelve equal parts of 30° each. The first part begins with 0°, the point where the Sun enters round about 21st March each year (Varsh Parti Pada).

Long ago, scientists interested in the study of the celestial bodies, whether astronomers or astrologers, had agreed upon a kind of yard-measure of the heaven by bodies whereby the point at which the Sun is to be found at the Vernal Equinox (that is about 21st March) is known as the beginning of Aries.

The Sun completes its circuit of the Zodiac in 12 months, remaining one month and some hours in every Sign or House; that means it moves one degree and a few minutes every day. It begins at 0° Aries and by moving one degree daily, after the elapse of 30 days and a few hours, it crosses Aries to the next Sign of Taurus, and so on till the end of the year when it comes back to its starting point and commences its annual circuit again.

The twelve Signs or Houses or Sections of the Zodiac are given on page 18 consequently (Table 2) with their corresponding symbols and the dates on which the Sun reaches 0° or the beginning of every Sign.

Every Sign or House is ruled or governed by one Planet which to a certain extent influences the behaviour and fortune of people born under that Sign. Apart from the Symbols of those Signs, the ruling Planets as well have their symbols as shown in Table 3.

It will be seen from the above, however, that one Planet rules over two different Signs: Mars governs both Aries and Scorpio, Venus governs Taurus and Libra, Mercury rules over Gemini and Virgo, Saturn governs both Capricorn and Aquarius, and Jupiter is the master of Sagittarius and Pisces. The Moon and the Sun each governs one Sign only, viz., Cancer and Leo respectively.

The fact remains that although one Planet rules over two different Houses, yet people born under the two different Houses widely differ in character, temperament, talents, etc. This difference is due to numerous factors dealing with the position, temperament, behaviour, etc., of the Planet itself together with its relation and different aspects with other planets. This is duly explained in Chapter XI.

In the meantime, it must be remembered always that the first duty of the Sign is to disclose the general structure or sketch of the character, temperament, peculiarities, etc. The duty of the ruling Planet is to bring to the surface the quality and quantity of those items and urge them to display themselves in accordance with the temperament and private traits of the sign itself; and here lies the main reason why we often find certain men of great talents who cannot conquer some of their bad habits, or notice a poor wretch with a good kind heart; and that is why you see a very brilliant young man who is born with a gambling itch or a big politician or scientist who is crazy about women or wine. Here also lies the main reason why there is no man of genius who has not to pay by way of some affliction or other defect either physical moral or spiritual, for what the Gods have given him.

According to their temperament, the Signs are divided into four groups:—
