Report from the Chairman

Fr. Alfred J Deignan, our beloved Chairman, spiritual leader and Dream Campaign Founder,
passed away on 19 December 2018. Coupled by the loss of late Mr. Wallace Yiu (WYHK75), our
beloved Honorary Secretary who returned to God’s hands on 11 March 2019, the year of 2018-2019
was a year of great sadness and sorrow. The late Fr. Deginan and Mr. Yiu would be fondly missed
for their selfless love and strife for the betterment of Wah Yan and their invaluable contribution to
Hong Kong and the Foundation. And with a view to upholding the spirit and Dream of Fr. Deignan,
the Foundation will commit to continue the support to the two Wah Yan Colleges in the years ahead.

Till August this year, a sum of around $6.3 million was raised, accruing our total fund raised
for the Dream Campaign to over $155 million since 2007. Over $130 million has been appropriated
to the two Wah Yan Colleges for small class teaching, teacher formation and whole person
development activities for students since 2008, leaving a balance of around $21 million by now. In
the 2019-2020 academic year, the Foundation will appropriate no less than $10 million to sustain
the above initiatives, albeit after that our reserve will become very low.

Over the years, the two Wah Yan Colleges have achieved very good results in open
examinations (DSE and others), inter-school athletic meetings and the Music Festivals (both
winning champions in several Sections), and other inter-school contests such as debate, speech,
mathematic and science tests, football, basketball, cross-country running, swimming and icy-hockey.
In short, our Schools have been on par with other elite schools in terms of academic performances,
while surpassing many by nurturing distinctive and mature leaders with positive values, a fighting
spirit, creativity and multiple capabilities. In the coming years, besides the Dream Campaign
initiatives, our Schools plan to offer more NET teaching and STEAM programmes to prepare young
Wahyanites for the ever-changing job market where AI related jobs are expected to dominate.

On estimation, an endowment of around HK$200-300 million is required to generate an annual

return of around $10 million to finance these urgent and important tasks in long term. Now we are
preparing our next fundraising plan, with a view to launching it together with the 100/95th
Anniversaries Celebration Programmes starting in September 2019.

Wahyanites and friends of Wah Yan, the Schools are in critical need of funding to sustain
important initiatives to further enhance the competitiveness of our students. May we call upon you
to stay tuned and support the Anniversaries Celebration programmes, so that we could secure the
essential funding for the betterment of quality education at the two Wah Yan Colleges.

Last but not least, may we again extend our great gratitude to all supporters of the Dream
Campaign for your unfailing efforts and selfless care for Wah Yan.

With gratitude and very best

wishes,

Fong Hup
Acting Chairman
