mitzi meyerson: It was an extremely happy accident. I was looking for the original score of the solo
harpsichord music of Richard Jones. There was an
excellent modern edition, but I wanted to find the
original text, to see if I could learn anything more. It
was also an impressive thing to have the very same
book in my hands that had been treasured by a player of the mid-1700s. I felt it was a sort of mission to
bring that music back into the 21st century; it was
simply too good to leave silent. While I was researching this music, I happened on another book containing the works of several composers, all bound together. One of these collections was the violin sonatas, or
Chamber Airs, of Richard Jones. I was astonished to
find the entire book. A bbc producer had once told
me that he wanted to programme one of these
sonatas, but that the scores could not be found.
Here I had it all in my hands. It was a clear copy, but
very fragile. The book was in pieces. I asked to have

kmk: Some of the keys are very unexpected and create the necessity of playing double stops without the
use of open strings. The player really has to struggle
to play these in high positions, contending with E
sharps (instead of F) and D flats (instead of C sharp).
It is an idiomatic and extremely virtuosic way of writing for the violin.
ch: There are eight sets, but you do not present them
in the numbered order. Is there some reason for that?
ch: What can you tell us about the keys and the tunings used on this recording?
mm: I wanted to tune for each home key, to make the
most beautiful and peaceful start and finish to each
movement. I tuned 6th comma based on the home
key, but corrected for the major thirds in main tonalities for each set. This led to purer thirds than one
might expect with the normal Young or Vallotti. It
also brought out the exquisite clashes of distant harmonies, and gave them an extra poignancy. We experienced the mythical B sharps as well as the elusive
A sharps. This sort of thing is a joy for keyboardists,
but not so much fun for the string players!

lp: If we three add up our time of intensively studying music, we have a collective investment of well
over a century working up to do this project! And we
needed every bit...
ch: Are there similarities between the solo harpsichord music and the violin pieces?
mm: The harpsichord music is written in an extremely violinistic idiom, with string crossing patterns of
Alberti bass, found in both the right and left hands.
Indeed some of the melodies have to be divided
between the hands in some seamless way, because
they are not playable by one hand alone. No other
English composer wrote harpsichord pieces of such
consistent technical and musical demands, and the
violin music is exactly the same. It is all innovative,
fresh, complex and very rewarding in every way.
ch: The title of the interview for the solo music was
Looking for Richard. I think we can call this one,

handelte.

Jahrhundert. Man

gemacht.

Hinsicht lohnend.

weltberhmte Rule, Britannia! beruht). Diese anschlieende Musikergeneration ist allgemeiner bekannt als
der heute vergessene Richard Jones. Im Jahr 1738
grndeten 228 Musiker (darunter neben den genannten auch Georg Friedrich Hndel) den Fund for the
Support of Decayd Musicians and their Families, der
spter in The Royal Society of Musicians umbenannt wurde.
