Pimpri Chinchwad ready for BRTS

14.5km Sangvi-Kiwale Corridor To Be Thrown Open For Commuters On September 5
TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Pune: The BRTS on the

14.5km Sangvi-Kiwale corridor in Pimpri Chinchwad will
become operational on September 5. The civic administration is making all out efforts to complete the works at
bus stations, signaling systems and pedestrian crossings.
Unlike the Pune Municipal Corporation, which built a
pilot BRTS nine years back,
the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has no
such experience to bank on.
However, the PCMC authorities insist they wont repeat
the mistakes committed by
their Pune counterparts. The
BRTS corridor in Pimpri will
provide a link to the MumbaiPune expressway as well as
the Dehu Road-Katraj bypass.
The Pimpri Chinchwad
BRTS has features similar to
the 7.1km Sangamwadi-Vishrantwadi corridor in Pune,
which was inaugurated last
Saturday.
All 21 bus stations have au-

tomatic doors which open after the bus gets aligned with
the station. Installation of
doors was in progress till last
week. All bus stations have television screens which have a
passenger information system displaying the bus route,
arrival of the next bus and
their frequency. Bus doors
open on the right side of the
bus station.
On Tuesday, some of the
bus stations were getting
freshly painted while others
were being given final touches. The work of installing a
traffic
signal
was
in
progress at Ravet. Most other
works related to pedestrian
signals, traffic signals at important junctions and pedestrian crossings have been
completed.
Unlike just a 7.1km stretch
in Pune, the PCMC boasts of a
bigger corridor spanning
14.5kms, which links the
Mumbai-Pune expressway as
well as the Dehu Road-Katraj
bypass. Passengers alighting
at Kiwale, either from Mumbai or Satara, will find it easy

Kalburgi probe may

help Pansare case
Vivek.Waghmode
@timesgroup.com

Kolhapur: Senior police officers are hoping that investigations into the murder of veteran Kannada writer M M
Kalburgi will help them get
some new leads about those
involved in the killing of rationalist Govind Pansare.
The police have already
said there were striking similarities in the attacks on Narendra Dabholkar, Pansare
and Kalburgi; they are investigating the Pansare case on
the same lines.
Meanwhile, two teams of
the city police that visited
Dharwad after Kalburgis
murder have returned to Kolhapur. Though the police are
yet speak about the information the teams have gathered,
they hope the details would
help them speed up investigations into the Pansare case.
Besides, the police are also expecting that the information
will help them in nabbing the
culprits who attacked Dabholkar.
Sanjay Verma, inspector general of Kolhapur
Range, said, There are
some similarities between
the attacks on Pansare and

Kalburgi. This would definitely give us some clues and

help us zero in on some possibilities. Investigations into
the recent incident will help
us speed up the Pansare murder probe.
After we got to know
about Kalburgis murder, we
immediately sent two teams
of policemen investigating
the Pansare murder case to
Dharwad. The teams have returned. We will get additional
information about the incident after communicating
with the teams, Verma said.
Senior police officers
from Belgaum have contacted
us and we have shared necessary information with them
regarding the Pansare murder case. We are communicating with each other and are
trying to find out the similarities between both the cases,
he said. The Kalburgi case
has been handed over to the
CBI, but the Dharwad police
will probe it on its own. We are
in touch with them and will
share info, he added.

City architects, students relive

memories of Charles Correa
Sadanand Godse

Pune: Memories of the time

spent with the late architect,
Charles Correa, who was
known for his landmark designs, were shared at a gathering organised by the Dr Bhanuben Nanavati College of
Architecture, which commemorated Correas life on a day he
would have turned 85.
Young architect Rohit Potdar believes he lost a father figure on June 16, the day Correa
passed away. Potdar works for
Charles Correa Associates,
which was set up by the late architect and urban planner. I
had only started out and I was
facing difficulty finding a
house in Mumbai. Charles
spoke to people he knew and
managed to find a place for me
within a few days. He cared a lot
for everyone in the office, until
his last days, said Potdar.
People, who knew Correa
personally, including archi-

the function Remembering Correa at the IUCAA auditorium

tects, students, as well as numerous clients and friends,

were invited to share their
thoughts at the gathering.
The Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) auditorium
was specially chosen as the venue for the event since the campus is hailed as one of Correas
greatest architectural designs.
Founding director of IU-

CAA, Dr Jayant Narlikar, described in vivid detail how Correa came to be the architect of
an institute, which is now renowned throughout the world
of astronomy. I was asked by
the University Grants Commission (UGC) to set up a centre for astronomy and astrophysics and naturally I wanted
the flagship centre to be constructed by an architect of re-

pute. Along with some of my

friends, I was apprehensive
that some of the bureaucrats
from UGC might insist on the
Public Works Department
(PWD) building the campus. Ultimately, I was able to get a goahead when I proposed Correas name as the architect,
Narlikar said.
The outgoing director of
the IUCAA, Dr Ajit Kembhavi,
remarked that he was perhaps
one of Correas last clients. He
had, very recently, finished designing a new building on our
campus. Its construction is
scheduled to begin shortly. Correa had a few objections to
some of the changes that the
UGC officials had proposed and
he was aiming to stick to his
original plan. Eventually, Correa got his way and I informed
him. He was breathless and
could barely speak over the
phone but he was enthusiastic
about the news. Five days later,
he passed away, Kembhavi recalled.
