A Freshy on Board

I am Luisa Frances S. Fernandez and I am seventeen years old. I am freshman

studying Bachelor of Fine Arts Major in Information Design here at the Ateneo De Manila
University. Yes, Im a Freshy on board!
I belong to a family who loves to travel and explore. We like to learn more of the
cultures and delicacies in different places. We try to visit churches in the journey and often
times we spend relaxation in sand and waters. A perfect vacation to me though is not just to
relax and sit back, but to walk around, climb mountains and explore caves. This to me is my
idea of a great vacation even if it means tiring our legs and walking through creepy paths and
hurdling them anyway, as long as my family are all together in it. My most memorable is our
Sagada adventure. Outside the country, Australia is my unforgettable experience.
I must say we are closely knitted and this is a lot to be thankful for. I have 5 siblings
3 sisters and 2 brothers.

One sister is a banker, another is pursuing Medicine and the last

one, Hotel and Restaurant Management. My older brother is taking up Economics and our
youngest boy who comes after me, is special. He goes to a special school. Having someone
with special needs make our family, a family with special needs.
One thing more that binds us together is the love for music. Music is another aspect of
me I am quite happy about. I just simply enjoy listening to music or making music by
playing the piano or the flute. I go for rock music but, I appreciate any kind. My parents
allowed and gave us the opportunities to learn musical instruments. I started to like the songs
of my moms time and I play them in my flute while she on the piano. These are fun and
loving moments especially when my brother joins with his violin and an evening can turn out
to be a jamming evening. Music brings us together in so many beautiful ways. We have also
found a venue to share this talent to, by serving in the church through being part of the parish
choir. And we also serve as lectors and readers at Mass and as catechists too. I imbibed my
musicality and my church service from no other than my parents. My mother is a pre-school
music teacher and a Legionary and father who although active in the corporate world,
serves as Lay Minister in our church.
I am a product of the School of the Holy Spirit in BF Homes Quezon City. As a young
student, I was not exactly grade conscious, rather, I was hardworking. I did not mind

spending a lot of my time on schoolwork and being assigned to do tasks because I simply
appreciated to make myself busy. I know myself not to be that smart so with this attitude,
my grades were remarkably good.
On my first year in high school, people saw me as the one who would excel in almost
anything but I never saw myself that way. I just always put to heart every task I was faced
with. In my first Guidance Counselling session in high school, I got struck because I was told
that my teachers and batch mates looked up on me. The counsellor asked me how I felt about
that! It was then when I started to feel some pressure and gradually became grade-conscious.
More than being grade-conscious, I also became eager to participate in activities in school
and outside school. I joined more academic and extra-curricular activities such as Math
competitions, singing and leadership trainings, Eucharistic celebrations, class and inter-class
competitions, chorale interschool competitions, backdrop-making, outreaches, variety shows
and student council elections to name some.
At some point, balancing all these became hard. I grew tired and dismayed. On my
second year of high school, I struggled with time management and lacked self-discipline.
This school year was the most difficult. But eventually, I managed to pull myself together for
the two remaining years in high school. These became the best years. I even ended up a
candidate for honors for graduation. I though, brought home to my parents and family a
Merit Card Award when I graduated. But it was gratifying to even be considered the
candidacy.
As a person who grew up liking pens, sketchpads and paint, I enjoyed art and all its
many forms. My earliest platforms in art were crafting and sketching. These art works I had
done for my family and friends. I continue on this hobby of drawing, sketching and painting
but now I find more interest in the digital side of art. As I expose myself to more visual
content online, the more I get to love digital art. I want to hone the skills I already have and
try to explore more art forms other than what I had been more used to. I share a gallery of my
personal work online. I think this is a path to a bright future ahead of me. It is career that I am
bound for. Thus, Information Design is the one for me. I am here in this university ready to
learn more. I have strengths and weaknesses as a person. I am kind hearted, God fearing and
caring. I am learning to be more patient with myself and others that I overcome being
perfectionist. I know God has plans for me. He wants me to live well and enjoy life.
