Etobicoke Collegiate Institute

School Council Meeting – December 4, 2007

Minutes & Business Arising:

 Sandy welcomed a large group of people to the meeting and advised that Minutes of
the October 24th meeting were available via e-mail and anyone who may not
currently be on the distribution list could be added if a request was made.

Student Council Report:

 General: Apologized for some of the Student Council not coming to the October
meeting due to a communication error. Winter Wonderland: many committees,
activities and events happening around the school: Movie; Candygrams; Pin the
Parts on the Snowman. ECI looking to get a new mascot. Holiday Assembly
December 21st – encourage students to attend. Semi Formal - $65 – February 14th at
Atlantis (Ontario Place)

 Charity: Maddie Westocott announced the Community Party will be held at ECI on
Saturday, December 8 from 9:00 to 12:00. Encouraged people to bring their children,
lots of fun activities; flyers were distributed by email and flyers to feeder schools.

 Treasurer: Reported that Student Council approved many requests this month.

 Athletic Executive: Food Drive: last year received 10 barrels of food & winning class
receives Raptors tickets. Athletic wear will be in soon for sales to start. Many teams
beginning: swimming, hockey, volleyball, skiing, snowboarding.

 Music Executive: Eggnog chugging contest December 17. December 5 – Music


concert $5.00 admission; silent auction and intermission will be extended. Citrus &
cookie dough pick up will be Monday, December 10.

School Council Chair Report: Sandy Brown

 Parent Information Night – January 29 regarding Underage Drinking – encourage all


parents to come; an invite will be extended to neighbouring schools (BA/ESA)
 Black Community Education Forum offered to hear info & provide input: December 8
at Winston Churchill C.I.
 John Campbell (Trustee) is having a Ward Meeting on Thursday, December 6;
although not particularly convenient for ECI parents due to so many ECI events that
week Sandy encouraged anyone to attend that was available. Agenda items include:

Board update; Etobicoke Humane Society representative; Argos Huddle Up Bullying


program
 Holiday Party to receive $100 from the Council
 Other disbursements were shown in budget
 News item mentioned regarding the Ministry’s intention to eliminate trans fat from
Secondary School cafeterias

Teacher Representative Report: Jim O’Reilly

 Mr. O’Reilly thanked all the parents for coming in for this meeting and the parent
teacher interviews; for parents who could not attend and would like a call, please
contact the teacher at school & indicate when a good time to call back would be if
they are not available at the time of the call
 Lower pressure time for grades 9 to 11; reinforced the pressure is on the Grade 12
students and to be aware of that; January will provide relief once the
university/college applications have been submitted

Principal Report:

 No hat policy is being enforced; creating positive learning environment


 No electronic policy is hard to enforce; put phones on vibrate only; no ipods etc.;
needs to be a focus on learning; appreciate support from parents
 4 day weekend in February 15 to 18 due to P.A. Day and new Family Day Statutory
Holiday
 Director of Education video message was presented regarding Character
Development; support staff, parents, students, teachers will all be requested to fill out
priorities on this initiative; not necessarily a new concept but new approach and
current directive; Board mandated initiative; acknowledges diversity & encourages
respect; respects constitutional rights in particular; Human Rights and also creates
self awareness and discipline
 ECI encourages Character Development through leadership camps; Student Council
& Council of Councils

New Business

 The article in the newspaper regarding the cancellation of girls hockey team was
addressed by the Principal; there is a plan for the girls to play hockey at tournaments
throughout the season
 Sandy thanked everyone for their participation over the school year so far and
wished everyone a safe and happy holiday.

Next Meeting: scheduled for Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at 7:00 pm in the
Auditorium….a special presentation on Underage Drinking….Can Teens Party Safely.
