Internship Duration: 2015/05/18 - 2015/07/12

of

Department / Institute:
Electronics and Communication Engineering
Department / Institute: Electrical Engineering
Host Professor: Jen-Ming Wu

Internship Subject: 1). A hands-on introduction to NI-Universal Software Radio Peripheral and NI- Labview.
2). Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) Transceiver design.

II.Professional Achievements
Goal: To learn how to use Labview software to program USRP and then
implement half duplex wireless communication using OFDM scheme.

Acknowledgements:
Achieving this goal would not have been possible if i did not have a support of
many individuals. Therefore I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to all of
them. First of all I am thankful to Professor Jen-Ming Wu for providing necessary
guidance concerning project, its implementation and helping me whenever I
needed. I am also grateful to the colleagues from EE111 Lab for their kind cooperation and encouragement which helped me while working on this project.

Introduction:
The Universal Software Radio Processor or USRP is very popular with radio
enthusiasts because it can be reprogrammed to perform non-standard radio
signal sampling and/or processing. I learnt various basic programming functions
like case structures, for-loop, while-loop, arrays, bundle etc. Then, I got
familiarized with NI-USRP while working on Labviews instruments input/output
function.

Technical Approach and analysis:

I started with writing simple Labview codes implementing basic arithmetic
operations and displayed the result using suitable indicator. Next, I learnt how to
write Labview code for QAM modulation and demodulation and further I used

this code to simulate the transmission of a string and demodulation of string

over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN).

Then I learnt about how to communicate using OFDM scheme. All involved steps
are given below in the block diagram and next to it is the Labview
implementation of all the steps.

Conclusion:
Randomly generated bits were 4-QAM modulated at carrier frequency of
915MHz using one USRP and this signal is received by another USRP over air.
Given below image shows two baseband waveforms. On the left is the waveform
of transmitted signal and the right one is the received baseband waveform.
Intensity of the received waveform decreases as the gain of the transmitter as

well as receiver decreases or the distance between transmitter-receiver pair

increases.

Cultural Experiences and Food in Taiwan

When I first departed for the Taiwan, I had no idea what to expect, as I had
little time to do research about life and people in Taiwan in general.
Fortunately, as I began my journey in Taiwan, the experience has been
delightful and fun. The people are surprisingly welcoming and always ready
to lend a hand when you need one, the food offers an adventure in itself, I
tried many food here and some of them are really delicious when I compare
to my country`s favorite dishes and the places to travel are diverse.
Once I visited Shifen waterfall and there I found hundreds of sky lanterns
light over the waterfall. I came to know that these lanterns are decorated
with wishes and images relating to the owner.

One good friend of mine told me that Heibai Wuchang are two deities. People travel around their
city with two deities and they hope to get peace in return.

Foods that I loved in Taiwan, are shown below. I have heard that Taiwan is very much famous
for pine apple cakes and I purchased it from nearby mart and it was really delicious. There is a
lot more dishes left to try before I leave Taiwan.

Comments and Suggestions for TEEP

I highly appreciate this program. It gave me opportunity to interact with Taiwan`s people, know
their culture and make new friends. There is one suggestion that Indian students are used to
highly spiced dishes and few of them are pure vegetarian, it would be great if they are given
dormitory with kitchen.
