RICHARDTON-TAYLOR PUBLIC SCHOOL DIST #34

September, 2015

Bohns Byline
It was pretty quiet in
the buildings during the
summer months as the
custodial staff worked
so hard to make the
school buildings look
spectacular. Thanks to
each of you for all your
hard work. A big
thanks to the office
staff and teachers who
also stay busy behind
the scenes to have everything in place for the
students as they walk
through the door for the
first day of school. August 25th was a day to
celebrate as many smiling, energetic children
again filled the halls of
TRE and St. Marys
bringing life back into
the buildings. We welcomed back 167 students in grades K-6,
and we will welcome
fourteen new preschoolers on September
8. We welcome the
many new students and
parents that have joined
our TRE family. We
are excited to have you
here, and please know
that you can call or stop
in anytime. Also, wel-

come back to our returning students and families,

it is great to have you
back.
We have many wonderful
staff members that work
together as a team to educate our children. I am
grateful for such a dedicated staff and the talents
and knowledge they bring
to create a strong, wellrounded education for our
students. I would like to
introduce the new team
players that also have
much to offer. Mrs. Deb
Huffman has returned to
serve as our interventionist at TRE, Mrs. Jennifer
Jung will serve as our
counselor, and Mrs. Kellie Redka and Mrs. Joni
Gjermundson have joined
the ranks as paras. Mrs.
Gjermundson will also be
helping out in the library.
We are glad to have you.
We are going to emphasize Richardton-Taylor
Public Schools five core
values throughout the
year. These core values
are: honesty, accountability, integrity, teamwork, and growth. We

want our students to

make these values a
part of themselves so
they can make a positive difference in our
homes, our communities, and beyond. Please
encourage your child/
ren to live these values.
As the 2015-2016
school year rolls along,
I want to remind the
parents to call TRE if
your child/ren are going to be absent from
school or if there are
any changes regarding
your child/rens normal
arrangements for going
home. It is important
for us to know if your
child/ren are to stay at
school for an event or if
you will be picking
them up after school so
we can make sure the
bus drivers know. If we
are not aware of any
changes, we will make
sure your child/ren follow their normal routine.

Please remember that we have some
students with peanut allergies so
please avoid sending food to school
that may contain peanuts or peanut
oil. Remember that the snacks that
you send should be healthy. We
will be serving fresh fruits and vegetables again this year on Tuesday,
Wednesday, and Thursday beginning on September 8.
Mrs. Dohrmann has been working
diligently to create a new webpage
for TRE. The webpage will be a
link on the Richardton Taylor
homepage, and it will contain a lot
of important information along with
a weekly calendar. This would be a
good place to keep track of the ac-

tivities for TRE. Our Parent/Student

Handbook is under revision and
will be sent home with your child/
ren as soon as we
have them printed.
Please take time to
familiarize yourself and your child/
ren with its content
when you receive
it.
There are many
important sporting events and other
activities such as the changing program and picture day coming up so
please check the calendar in the
newsletter. Parents, if you are looking for a way to be involved, we

have a parent organization called

PAWS that does many great things
for our students. It is a great way to
help out our school. If you are
interested in checking the organization out or joining, the
next meeting will be held at
TRE on September 29 at
6:00.
I am excited to serve as the
principal of TRE and to be
able to have the chance to
work with your child/ren.

PAWS Prints

PAWS (Parents Active With School), is a volunteer organization that supports activities and conducts fundraisers
along with the Taylor-Richardton Elementary School to help provide an enhanced learning environment for our students. Some of the PAWS highlights:

Create a community calendar filled with birthdays and school activity dates.

Conduct the annual Clubs Choice fundraiser which provides funding for teacher requests such as books, audio
-visual equipment, furniture, art supplies, etc.

Instrumental in Project Playground to update both TRE playground areas with new equipment and safer playground surfacing.

Host the annual Spring Fling for TRE students and families.

All volunteers are welcome to join us for monthly meetings or to help with activities and fundraisers. All new ideas
are welcome!
To learn more about PAWS at TRE, check out our Facebook group: TRE PAWS PRINTS or look for the PAWS
PRINTS section in the Richardton Taylor school newsletter.
Join us for our next meeting on September 29 at 6:00 p.m. in the TRE staff room.

RTPSD and Power Announcements

Richardton-Taylor School District
uses a school notification system called
Power Announcement. This notification system has features that will make
it easier for us to keep in contact with
your family. To guarantee the messaging system is used efficiently, you will
need to confirm your contact information is accurate and up-to-date at all
times.
Power Announcement allows our
school to send messages using email,
voice, and text messaging. Voice calls
will be sent from RTHS with (866) 665

from TRE with the caller ID (877) 2818317 . You may want to add this number to your address book to help you to
easily recognize incoming calls from
the school. Text messages will be sent
using a caller ID of 95664. You may
want to add this phone number to your
address book as well. Please note you
will not be able to reply to text messag-

Information was mailed to all TRE
households in August with step-by-step
directions for accessing the PowerSchool Parent Portal and clicking on
the link to Power Announcement.
You will be able to see all the contact

Secondary Principals Note... Dr. Misti Vogle

Hello Raiders! We ar e excited that
school is in full swing. Students are
learning and sports are beginning. The
Raider staff and students are off to a
great start!
While working here at RichardtonTaylor throughout the past years I have
always been amazed at the communitys generosity in supporting students
education and activities. So it is with
no surprise that you will see thank you
notes throughout the newsletter regarding community involvement and generosity.
If you have driven past the school lately you will see the new Crows Nest by
the football field. Multiple people have
come together in working towards
completion of the new building including Mr. Russ Ziegler, Mr. Jody Hoff,
Mr. Gary Messer and his crew, Mark
Homula, Lenny Hueske, Larry Goldsmith, Shawn Carey, Raider Booster
Club and multiple volunteers that have
helped throughout the process of the
new Crows Nest. Multiple donations
made this possible. Donations were
received from Amber Waves, Richardton Dental, Dakota Community
Bank, Jims Repair, Richardton Lions,
Bremer Bank, Beaver Creek RanchPhilip Messer and Sons, Lennys, Ron
Goetz, Stone Mill, Cenex, Springfield
Market, Taylor Community Association in Memory of John Gengler, the

Woroniecki family in honor of Jordan Schumacher

and the Raider Booster Club.
The football field light posts have also been reanchored for increased structural stability. Thank
you to Lenny Hueske and Crew, Jodi Hoff, Amber
Waves, and Shawn Carey for completing this project.
We are updating our classrooms with new student
desks. These student desks offer students pod seating for group work and easy accessibility for instructors to assist students while learning. The pod
desks provide a comfortable learning environment
for the students and also creates a fresh look to
learning as we teach our students to work together
in groups. Some classes are using these desks to
arrange the classrooms in an open-concept layout,
supporting students visual learning as they are

able to view the instructor

and smartboards easily. It is
our goal to continue to update a few classrooms every
year.
AN IMPORTANT NOTE
REGARDING LUNCH:
I want to inform you that
Richardton-Taylor High
School takes a lunch count
for the day and a breakfast
count for the next morning.
Meal count is taken along
with attendance at the beginning of 1st period. The cooks
prepare the amount of food
sufficient for students according to this count. We
want to provide enough food
for everyone and at the same
time, not waste food. Food
waste in the lunch room has
been excessive in the past
and we are trying to make
the lunch program more cost
efficient. It is important if a
student wants to be excused
for lunch that parents/guardians excuse their
students for lunch by
9:00am.

I do want to address the Multiple-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus infection (MRSA) that has been reported in our
area. The school has taken a pro-active stance with protecting the students safety and the community. The weight
room, locker rooms, school, and equipment have been thoroughly disinfected. We took precautionary measures by
cancelling sports that were scheduled on August 28, 29, 30, & 31st. I want to thank the North Dakota High School
Activities Association, Southwest Health District, Custer Health, Sanford Health, North Dakota Department of
Health, and our local health clinics for their assistance and support with this matter. Further information regarding
MRSA Staph infection is included in the newsletter for your awareness.

Letter from the Athletic Director

As you may know, Richardton-Taylor High School has had MRSA Staph in our area. We have
already missed out on a handful of game contests due to this situation. We are trying to reschedule all
levels of games postponed from Friday, Aug. 28 to Monday, August 31. I will do my best to get these
games back on our schedule. I am asking that you please be patient with this situation.
If you have any questions or concerns about the MRSA Staph, please talk with Mr. Bautz or Dr.
Vogle. As for questions regarding the make-up dates of game contests, I ask that you email myself at tyler.ward@k12.nd.us. This is the best way to reach me, as I am teaching between three buildings in one
school day.
Thank you all for your time. Have a wonderful day!

ImPACTs Testing from the Desk of Mr. Ward

Due to the recent addition of the CHI St. Joseph Sport Medicine Team to the Richardton-Taylor Athletic
Department, we have the opportunity to offer all high school athletes to take part in an online cognition test. This test
is one more tool for a doctor to use and determine if any student is able to return to play, if they do sustain a concussion. Information regarding this test is below and is free for students.
ImPACT's Test is computerized test and takes about 25 minutes to complete. It is used to establish a baseline score and if a concussion is suspected, the baseline report will serve as a comparison to a repeat Impact test. We
then use this information to assess potential changes or damage caused by a concussion. Its also another tool that we
use to determine whether or not an athlete is ready to return to his/her respective sport. The impact test itself
measures multiple aspects of cognitive functioning in athletes, including: attention span, working memory, sustained
and selective attention time, response variability, non-verbal problem solving, and reaction time.

Also, the impact web-site also had this description;

IMPACT Features

Measures player symptoms

Measures verbal and visual memory, processing speed, and reaction time

Reaction time measured to a 1/100th of second

Assists clinicians and athletic trainers in making difficult return-to-play decisions

Provides reliable baseline test information

Produces a comprehensive report of test results

Results are presented as a PDF file and can be emailed

Automatically stores data from repeat testing

This test is completely OPTIONAL for all students to take. It is not required. Richardton-Taylor High School asks
that all student-athletes interested in taking this test, to do so on their free time or in a study hall. All results are kept
confidential.
See below for the website and code needed to complete the online test.

Code: H8XH7GNMSP
