COURSE DESCRIPTION:
CIS 110 is an introduction to the Internet and computer networking from a non-technical point of view.
Explores the history of the Internet, and what the Internet can do for you. Focuses on the fundamentals of
Windows Vista, the Internet Explorer browser, and the Windows Mail e-mail client, while describing
Internet capabilities, and showing how to apply a variety of services, and providing familiarization with
microcomputer concepts and directory and file management theory.

OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of CIS 110 the student will be able to:
• To describe basic Internet capabilities.
• To demonstrate effective use of network and Internet services.
• To describe the origin of the Internet and Internet related services.
• To define and describe the relationships of global Internet infrastructures.
• To demonstrate working knowledge of EMAIL, the WWW browser Internet Explorer.
• To demonstrate the effective use of the Internet for research.

STUDENT CONDUCT:
• Arrive on time for each class meeting. My classes begin on time and end on time and I never backup.
• Please have respect for other students. Doing other homework, talking to others during lecture or when
someone else is talking, leaving early on a regular basis, distrubing others, arriving late on a regular basis
are behaviors that are considered unacceptable in this class. See Code of Student Rights and
Responsibilities for more information. See also the Statement of Academic Honesty on the SPSCC
Intranet. Knowledge of the information contained in these documents is the student’s responsibility.
• Adhere to the Code of Ethics for Using Computer Resources while in the class room or one of the
computer labs.
• Students receiving financial aid should ALWAYS check with Financial Aid prior to withdrawing, signing
an incomplete contract, changing to an audit, or receiving an F or V grade in a class.

EVALUATION PROCESS:
• Homework assignments are due before the start of the first class meeting following the day it was
assigned. There is a twenty percent (20%) deduction for late assignments turned in the second class
meeting following the day it was assigned. Beyond that, a score of 0 will be recorded. There will be no
makeup for quizzes, in class exercises, individual module exams or the final exam.
➢ Labeling and assembling papers
 All assignments must be properly hand labeled in the upper right-hand corner of the first
page and must include the following information:
1. Student Name
2. Assignment name/number as indicated on the competency sheet (i.e. Comp A).
3. The hour your class meets
 On pages other than the first, only the assignment name needs to be written in the upper
right-hand corner of each page.
 All assignments must be properly assembled and stapled together and placed in my
basket.
 Failing to properly label and assemble the assignments will earn a 20% deduction on that
assignment.
○ When using the drop box you must name the file using the class hour, then your last name
followed by your first name and then the file name. Example - 11McGaffickDennisCompA
• Tests and In-Class Exercises are theory and performance-based assessments on the computer. They are
based on the concepts learned by reading the material in the book, class demonstrations, and completing
the assignments.

Points Quizzes 15% No makeup
Midterm Exam 30% No makeup
Final Exam 30% No makeup

COURSE COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS:


• Attend each class session. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to obtain assignment/testing
information from another class member or your instructor.
• Read the assigned chapters and work through the tutorial exercises and the homework
assignments.
• Complete, proofread and correctly label and assemble each assignment before turning it in.
• Complete the in-class graded exercises and exams.
• Be prepared to spend as much as two hours a week on the computer outside of class to complete
the homework assignments for every one hour in class.
