RESEARCH PROPOSAL

Title:

Development

of

Power

System

Analysis

teaching/

Research Tool
Statement of Problem: Students understanding of Power
System Analysis in class has taken a deep because they are
taught the required analysis but have no idea what happens
during the dynamics of the system. This problem motivated this
work as the development of a graphic user interface will help
demonstrate to students the various responses obtained for
specified parameters. This will enable students understand the
dynamics of such a system and can hence enable the students
improve the response of the system by tweaking system
parameters.
Background: Power system Analysis is an important course for
electrical and electronics engineering students. In this course
student will study representation of power system components,
per unit quantities, formation of admittance and impedance
matrix, symmetrical components, short circuit fault study, load
flow analysis, transmission line representation and performance
analysis, Stability studies of power system including steady
state and transient stability, Economic operation of power
system. Power flow studies are the backbone for power system
analysis, stability and design. They are necessary for planning,
operation,

economic

scheduling

and

exchange

of

power

between utilities. Power flow analysis is required for many other

analyses such as fault analysis, transient stability studies and

contingency studies.
The Power System Analysis to be carried out is Transformer
tests and Analysis. This GUI program will obtain the transformer
equivalent circuit from open-circuit and short-circuit tests. It will
also compute the transformer performance characteristics
using the transformer parameters.
Objectives: To develop a Graphical User Interface (GUI) tool
using the guide tool in MATLAB, for Power System Analysis
(Transformer
teaching

and

tests,

equivalent

research.

This

circuit
will

and

improve

performance)
the

learning

experience of students, make models easier to understand and

will enable tweaking and improvements by students.
Methodology: The MATLAB application will be employed in the
development of the graphical user interface tool. The MATLAB
guide tool will be used in the design of the front-end program
(User section) while the back-end (Code section) will be done
on an m-file. The Power System Analysis to be carried out is
Transformer tests and Analysis. This GUI program will obtain the
transformer equivalent circuit from open-circuit and shortcircuit tests. It will also compute the transformer performance
characteristics using the transformer parameters. Analysis of a
three-phase transformer will be treated provided parameters of
one phase of an equivalent Y-Y are specified.
Application: This program will improve the learning process of
students, make models easier to develop and understand,

enable the tweaking of model parameters to ascertain the

various

output

responses

of

different

parameters

hence

enabling predictability. It will also serve as a research tool which

will enhance the research studies of academics.
Scope: This study encompasses transformer equivalent circuit
from open-circuit to short-circuit tests. It also includes the GUI
computation of transformer performance characteristics using
the

transformer

parameters.

Analysis

of

three-phase

transformer will also be looked at provided parameters of one

phase of an equivalent Y-Y are specified.
