Aim
The aim of this unit is to enable learners to develop understanding of different
theories and stylesof learning and to apply this to learning strategies within the
health and social care workplace.
Introduction
The objective of this module is to assist students toexplore current theories of
learning andrelate these to the development of practical skills and the acquisition of
knowledge andunderstanding. It provides an understanding of the different ways in
which individualslearn and can be supported in the health and social care workplace
to develop practice. Learnerswill draw on their own experience to suggest ways of
supporting learning.
Learners willinvestigate individual learning needs and consider how practice in the
health and social careworkplace can provide support for care workers. They will
explore ways of planning learningopportunities and the factors that contribute to
successful delivery or learning in the workplace. Itis particularly appropriate for those
with responsibilities for supporting the learning ofothers in the workplace, but would
be equally useful for practitioners to use as part of their own
personal and professional development

Task 2 - (1.2, 1.3, M1 & M2)
CASE STUDY
Elma is on placement in a residential home and is trying to have a conversation
with Mr Smith who is 90 years old and deaf. She knows it is important to him that
he still communicates with people. She starts by asking him about his family. She
speaks loudly but notices that Mr Smith does not respond to any of her questions
about his family. Elma decides there is no point in continuing the conversation.
In the staff room, she talks about the situation with one of the care assistants who
say that Mr Smith is able to lip read. Elma thinks about the conversation and
realises that she had not been sitting in a position where Mr Smith could see her
face. She goes back to Mr Smith and pulls a chair so that she is facing him. She
asks the same questions about his family and, this time, Mr Smith is very talkative,
so much that Elma has to interrupt him to give out tea. When she asks Mr Smith if
he would like a drink, she remembers to pause and face him when she asks the
question:
Using the above case study and the Note below, answer the following questions:
1. At what stage did Elma start Kolbs Learning Cycle? What did she do in respect
of each of the subsequent stages of the cycle? AC 1.2
2. What was Elmas learning from the experience? AC 1.3

Note:

Use Kolbs/Races Learning Cycle and three (3) theories of learning to explain
different ways in which learning can occur (1.2)

GRADING CRITERIA
PASS
A pass grade is achieved by meeting all the
requirements defined in the assessment criteria for
pass for each unit
MERIT
In order to achieve a merit grade students must
complete the necessary requirement for M1, M2 and
M3
DISTINCTION
In order to achieve distinction grade students must
complete all necessary requirements. Note before you

Some useful Guidelines:

1.
All work evidence must be completed within a word limit of
3,000 by Individual Student, excluding tables, diagrams and
appendices.
2.
The assessment for this unit would be based on Pass, Merit and
Distinction grading criteria, in order to pass this course you have to
fulfil all the assessment criteria.
3.
To achieve any pass grading criteria i.e. Pass, Merit or
Distinction on this assignment, the learners must follow all the tasks
assessment for grading and answer all the questions correctly. This
is where the questions have been divided into simply elements for

M. Amankwah

learners to understand how the questions must be dealt with.

4.
The source of all figures and diagrams should be clearly
referenced, this is important as students often neglect and this
could affect your overall grade. Do not forget to reference the
sources of your data, sources of diagrams.
5.
Your references should evidence clear use of the Harvard
System.
6.
It is essential that you make practical use of models and
concepts from the theory you have covered during the class session.
Work that does not do this will not attract a Pass grade.
7.
During the period of your class session, your course tutor will
act as your consultant. He will be happy to discuss with you, your
approach to your work evidence and your chosen organisational
focus so you should feel able to try out your thoughts and ideas. It
is sensible to seek advice and support from your tutor if you are not
sure of how to produce any work evidence, instead of taking the risk
of handing in a work that will fail.
8.
You will need to carry out background research via company
websites, and appropriate books and journals.
9.
As you work through the three tasks, all your answers must
focus on the specific health and social care settings and the
interacting and communication skills and styles described
assignments that do not do this or are just general essays will not
achieve a Pass grade.
