Aim
The aim of this unit is to enable learners to develop understanding of different
theories and stylesof learning and to apply this to learning strategies within the
health and social care workplace.
Introduction
The objective of this module is to assist students toexplore current theories of
learning andrelate these to the development of practical skills and the acquisition of
knowledge andunderstanding. It provides an understanding of the different ways in
which individualslearn and can be supported in the health and social care workplace
to develop practice. Learnerswill draw on their own experience to suggest ways of
supporting learning.
Learners willinvestigate individual learning needs and consider how practice in the
health and social careworkplace can provide support for care workers. They will
explore ways of planning learningopportunities and the factors that contribute to
successful delivery or learning in the workplace. Itis particularly appropriate for those
with responsibilities for supporting the learning ofothers in the workplace, but would
be equally useful for practitioners to use as part of their own
personal and professional development

CASE STUDY
Elma is on placement in a residential home and is trying to have a conversation
with Mr Smith who is 90 years old and deaf. She knows it is important to him that
he still communicates with people. She starts by asking him about his family. She
speaks loudly but notices that Mr Smith does not respond to any of her questions
about his family. Elma decides there is no point in continuing the conversation.
In the staff room, she talks about the situation with one of the care assistants who
say that Mr Smith is able to lip read. Elma thinks about the conversation and
realises that she had not been sitting in a position where Mr Smith could see her
face. She goes back to Mr Smith and pulls a chair so that she is facing him. She
asks the same questions about his family and, this time, Mr Smith is very talkative,
so much that Elma has to interrupt him to give out tea. When she asks Mr Smith if
he would like a drink, she remembers to pause and face him when she asks the
question:

1. At what stage did Elma start Kolbs Learning Cycle? What did she do in respect
of each of the subsequent stages of the cycle? AC 1.2
2. What was Elmas learning from the experience? AC 1.3
Note:
