The A/H1N1 virus, or commonly referred

This virus is transmitted in a very similar
manner to the regular flu virus, i.e. mainly
through the air: coughing, sneezing, breath-
ing next to an infected person or by touch-
ing an infected surface then touching the
nose. It reaches its peak in low tempera-
tures and humid environments.

Once infected, the subject shows the regular
flu symptoms: Fatigue, muscle pain, headaches,
sneezing, coughing, breathing difficulties and
intense fever. That makes it hard to tell
whether the infection is due to regular flu virus
or H1N1, but experts say that if the fever lasts
for more than 24hours then it is most likely
H1N1. The only way to tell is by getting
checked in any nearby hospital or treatment
facility in Algeria.
In case of infection, the patient is hospital-
ized and put under quarantine. The treatment
is a combination of antivirals, most importantly
Tamiflu which is available in sufficient quanti-
ties in Algeria (over 7 million doses).
To ensure protection against the swine flu, a
very controversial vaccine was elaborated
under supervision of the WHO. The vaccina-
tion campaign started in numerous countries
including Algeria who ordered almost 20 mil-
lion doses of the vaccine.
Something that needs to be kept in mind is
that the swine flu is not a fatal disease; actu-
ally it killed much less than the regular flu kills
every season. But it can get really dangerous
and mortal in case of people with previous
health problems (diabetics, asthma,..), preg-
nant women and kids. This is why these are the
categories targeted first by the vaccine.
In the end, the best way to stay out of
range of the H1N1 pandemic virus is by fol-
lowing the proper hygiene practices: avoiding
contact with infected persons, using masks,
keeping distance and most importantly prop-
erly washing hands with liquid soap.
