THE PROBLEM AND ITS RELATED LITERATURE
Introduction
In a meaningful deliberation of a lesson in a teaching-learning situation, materials
are used as aid to facilitate learning. Materials like workbooks, modules, visual aids,
pictures, graphs, and flipchart greatly help the teachers and pupils for a meaningful outcome.
Strategic Intervention Materials (SIMs) are self-learning kits (SLKs) similar to modules.
They are used for individualized instruction. SIMs are made attractive tool like books which
seem less interesting to pupils. Instead, SIMs are attractive and colorful activity cards placed
in envelops that may pass as games to the pupils. The SIMs is modules disguised as activity
cards to eliminate the stereotyped behavior of pupils on books. They are better than modules
or SLKs because of their unique features such as being focused on the desired skills; they
were intervention materials which designed to help teachers provide the students a needed
support to make progress. They tried to increase and deepen their skills, knowledge and
understanding from concrete science to what is more abstract. They gave the students the
opportunity to explore their understanding and make sense of these new scientific ideas.
They helped the students talk what they know and understand from the teacher to formalize
their thinking. Furthermore, they were instructional materials meant to re-teach the
concept(s) and skill(s) to help the learners master a competency-based skill which they were
not able to develop during classroom teaching.
In a nutshell, the strategic intervention materials ensured alignment of activities with
the tasks/objectives, kept the activities short and simple, provided a variety of activities to
cater to the diverse learning styles; provided number of activities so that the learner can have

The main inquiry of the study is to find the effects of Born to be
Wild, a strategic intervention material in Grade Six in improving pupils
performance.
Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:
1. Is Born to be Wild, a strategic intervention material sufficient and
suitable instructional material?
2. Is there a relevance of the proposed SIMs in Science VI based on
gain scores?
