SPECIFICATION P-90:82
CURRENT TRANSFORMERS (33KV TO 132 KV)

0.

FOREWORD

This specification has been prepared by Design Department (Power)

WAPDA.
This specification is intended for the procurement of material and
does not include all the necessary provisions of a contract.
This specification is subject to revision periodically as and when
required.
In 1968 a specification for current transformers was written as a
chapter in the detailed specification for the 32 Grid Station project. With
minor changes, such as change in ratios, this was adopted for 22 and
IDA Grid Station projects. In 1973 it was reviewed, revised and rewritten
for 220/ 132 kV Burhan Grid Station. In this ratios were changed,
number of cores increased and requirements for 220kV CTs
incorporated.
In March 1975 this specification was reviewed and
rewritten in the form of a standard specification for 220kV, 132kV and
66kV CTs. The second edition was further revised and the requirements
for 33kV CTs were added. The third edition has again been revised and
provision of 132kV CTs with 1 Amp. Secondary current have been
included. The requirement for 220kV CTs have been deleted since it has
been decided to issue separate specifications for 220 kV CTs.
1.
SCOPE

installation for use with electrical relays and measuring instruments in
Grid Stations.

CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS
General
The current transformers shall be single pole, oil filled, and selfcontained outdoor type. Oil level indicator marked for 250C
shall be provided. The oil shall be class-I oil conforming to IEC296.
The current transformers shall be hermetically sealed.
If
bellows are used to accommodate oil expansion, they shall be
made of a suitable grade of stainless steel. A suitable device for
indicating the position of the bellows shall be provided.

5.1.3

To obtain multiple ratios it is permissible to provide series

parallel connections of the primary winding.
Where such
arrangements are provided, it shall be possible to connect the
primary windings externally to change the ratios, and the
interior of the transformer should remain sealed.

5.2

Temperature Rise

The temperature rise of the current transformers under

conditions specified in IEC 185 shall not be more than 550C.
The reduction of 10 degree centigrade is specified due to high
ambient temperature.
5.3

Painting

5.3.1

All exposed metallic parts shall be painted except where

painting will interfere with the normal operation of the
equipment. Where surface is left unpainted for mounting
purposes they shall be suitably protected to prevent rusting
during storage and ocean transport.

5.3.2

After surface preparation and cleaning of all surfaces to be

painted, the surfaces not in contact with oil shall be painted
with two coats of an epoxy primer containing red lead, zinc or
aluminum. The surfaces shall be finish coated with two coats
of enamel applied to provide a uniform smooth surface free from
blemishes.

5.3.3

The interior and exterior surfaces of the current transformers

shall be given manufacturers standard finish before shipping
but a dull grey colour finish shall be preferred. A very light
colour or aluminum paint shall not be used.

5.4

Housing and Tanks

5.4.2

The complete assemblies shall form sealed enclosures capable

of sustaining full pressure developed within housing or tank,
either above or below atmospheric, under normal conditions of
operation. The winding and bushings shall be hermetically
sealed to prevent the entrance of moisture or leakage of the
dielectric when the current transformer is installed or when
under transportation.

5.5.

Bushings.

5.5.1

Bushings shall be wet process porcelain, homogeneous, free

from laminations, cavities or other physical flaws and shall be
well vitrified, tough and impervious to moisture. Bushings shall
be of glazed brown colour. All bushings shall be so designed
that there will be no undue stress on any parts due to
temperature change. Fittings made of steel shall be galvanized.

5.5.2

bushing and terminated in non split, current shorting type,
terminal block located in a weather proof case near the current
transformer base.
Provision shall be made for entry and
connection with 4 Core, 6 mm2, Copper Control Cables.

5.8

Two number earthing terminals at diagonally opposite position
shall be provided. Each terminal shall be capable of carrying
full short circuit current and be suitable for accommodating 95
to 120 sq mm copper earthing lead.

6.

TERMINAL MARKING
The terminal marking for the current transformers shall be in
accordance with clause 22 of the IEC Publication 185 (1966).

7.

RATING PLATE MARKINGS.

The rating plate markings shall be in accordance with clause 23
of IEC Publication 185 (1966) and shall incorporate the data
required for measuring and protective current transformers in
accordance with the clauses 32 and 41 respectively of IEC
Publication 185 (1966). The rated burdens and accuracy at all
current ratios shall be marked.
