Ten Evidences that Joseph Smith Was a True Prophet

During a discussion with a taxi driver on the island of Mallorca, I asked him about his interest
in religion. He commented that he was Pentecostal and I informed him that we were
Mormones-miembros de la Iglesia de Jesucristo de Los Santos de Los Ultimos Dias. He
responded, No es la iglesia que cree in Jose Smith? I answered that we respected Joseph
Smith but do not worship him but believe that he is a true prophet of God. I got his address
and will send a copy of the Book of Mormon. As we left, I reflected on the fact that a humble
taxi driver on the island of Mallorcathousands of miles away from the center of the Church
had a knowledge of Joseph Smith. In that we see fulfillment of the prophecy that the prophet
would be known for good and evil among all men. I recall the story told by President Hinckley
in which someone approached him and told him that he respected Mormonism a great deal
and could probably accept the faith if he didnt have to accept that Joseph Smith guy.
President Hinckley responded that if you cant accept Joseph Smith, you cant accept any part
of the faith because everything hinges on the fact that he was the man called of God to
restore the true church, translate the Book of Mormon, and receive revelation regarding the
organization and order of the restored church. Sometimes members are almost apologetic
with their friends about the Prophet. I submit that there are a multitude of external evidences
witnessing of Joseph Smiths prophetic calling. Let me share with you 10 Evidences that
Joseph Smith was a true prophet.
1. A true prophet testifies of Jesus Christ
Evidence: Read D&C 76:22-23 in which he bears a powerful testimony of the Living Christ. In
essence he said after all of the testimonies have been given, this is the testimony, last of all,
which we give of him: That he lives! For we saw him, even on the right hand of God. The
Prophet Joseph had an unshakeable testimony of the Savior and qualifies him for this
evidence.
2. A true prophet prophecies of things to come in the future and they happen exactly as he
prophecied
Evidence: Read D&C 87:1-4 in which he prophecies of the coming Civil War. The prophecy
was given in 1832, some 28 years before the start of the Civil War which happened exactly as
he prophecied. It is a prophecy stunning in its power and accuracy.
3. A true prophet writes down the revelations he receives from God and they become
scripture
Evidence: The prophet Joseph Smith produced more pages of scripture through translation
and revelation than any other prophet who has ever lived! Jeremiah produced 80 pages,
Isaiah 80 pages, and even Moses produced 308 pages in the Pentatuch (first 5 books of the
Old Testament). The prophet Joseph was responsible for almost 900 pages of new scripture.
He was not only a prophet but a prolific prophet.

4. The works of a true prophet are good fruits

Evidence: Read Matthew 7:16-20 which states that a good tree can not bring forth bad fruit. It also
states that by their fruits ye shall know them. The prophet restored the Church and it has become a
worldwide faith, literally blessing people all over the earth. The Latter-Day Saints are a healthier
people (they live significantly longer due to lower cancer incidences and lower heart attack rates)
because of the Word of Wisdom, they give more service (see study by Pew Charitable Trust), they are
more generous in their financial giving, they have a high rate of education, and those married in the
temple have a lower divorce rate. Truly the fruits of this prophet are exemplary.
5. A true prophet is never popular among the general population because he calls them to repentance
Evidence: Joseph Smith was outspoken in stating that other faiths were not the true church and had a
form of godliness but denied the power thereof. He was threatened, beaten, tarred and feathered,
slandered, vilified, jailed and arrested a multitude of times. Truly he qualifies under this evidence.
6. A true prophet often opens up a new dispensation after a period of apostasy
Evidence: Joseph opened up the Dispensation of the Fullness of Times after almost 1,700 years of
darkness and apostasy. The Church of Jesus Christ was restored as it had existed in antiquity and the
gospel will never again be taken from the earth.
7. A true prophet corrects false doctrine and false teachings
Evidence: The revelations received by the Prophet corrected a host of false doctrines such as infant
baptism, aspersion (sprinkling) for baptism, the nature of the Trinity, priesthood authority, virgin worship,
saints as intermediaries (supererogation), the true nature of heaven, and the relationship between grace
and works.
8. A true prophets understands the nature of the godhead
Evidence: In the First Vision, the prophet saw that God and his son Jesus Christ were two separate beings.
In the King Follett discourse, he described a God who was essentially an exalted man (As man is God once
was; as God is man may become). Read D&C 130:22 in which the prophet reveals that our Father in
Heaven has a body of flesh and bones and that he and the Son and the Holy Ghost are separate.
9. A true prophet performs mighty miracles but never does so to impress the curious
Evidence: There are a host of recorded miracles by the Prophet Joseph Smith including healing a lame arm,
healing of a woman on her deathbed, healing a large group of Saints with fever and infection, healing of a
woman bedridden for many years, and casting out evil spirits.
10. A true prophet often seals his testimony with his own blood
Evidence: Joseph Smith was brutally murdered by an unruly army of zealots on June 27, 1844 sealing his
testimony of Christ with his blood like Peter, James, John, Paul, Stephen, and many other martyrs. He
prophecied of his own death. Read D&C 135:3 for a description of his remarkable accomplishments.
John Taylor stated that Joseph Smith has done more for the salvation of man than anyone who ever lived
except, of course, Jesus Christ. These are powerful evidences of Josephs prophetic calling. They
corroborate my testimony born of the Holy Ghost that Joseph Smith was a true prophet and, because that
is true, the Restoration really occurred and our message is the most important message on the face of the
earth.

Attributes of Jesus ChristVirtue

Virtue is the power of a life that is in harmony with the holy standards of God.
Virtue originates in your innermost thoughts and desires. It is a pattern of thought and behavior based on
high moral standards. Since the Holy Ghost does not dwell in unclean tabernacles, virtue is prerequisite to
receiving the spirits guidance. What you choose to think and do when you are alone and you believe no
one is watching is a strong measure of your virtue.
Virtue is like static electricity that builds up in a persons body after walking on carpet in a dry atmosphere.
If someone touches that person, there will be an electrical shock. In similar manner, Christ was filled with
the Holy Spirit and then lead into the barren wilderness, where he was tested and tempted for forty days.
Then he returned, In power of the Spirit, (Luke 4:14) and he began to minister to the multitudes. The
people soon realized that the power of God was in him. Therefore The whole multitude sought to touch
Him: For there went virtue out of him, and healed them all. (Luke 6:19)
Our Heavenly Father wants each of us to have this same power of virtue and use it to benefit others. As
missionaries we can be virtuous by:

1. Being obedient to Gods commandments and the mission rules found in the Missionary Handbook.
2.

Only viewing uplifting material (Books, DVDs, Videos, etc.)

3.

Looking the other way when immodest pictures are displayed or women are wearing immodest
clothing.

4. Thinking uplifting thoughts, pondering the scriptures, looking for the good in others, etc.
5. Praying for the strength to resist temptation.
6. Following the counsel of church leaders.
7. Living worthy of a temple recommend.
8. Making sure our desires are in harmony with our Heavenly father's desires in how we spend our time
and resources.
President Dayton and I are so grateful for each of you. We know that as you continue to focus on uplifting
thoughts, your behavior and actions will allow the Spirit to be your constant guide. We will continue to
pray for you daily as you strive to live a virtuous, Christlike life.

Milagros
Good morning president, this
week has been another great
week with Elder ____ where we
saw more milagros one of which
was the baptism of Mara Jess.
When we first started teaching
her, she was catholic and didnt
want to change at all, but as we
taught her and she read the Book
of Mormon and prayed and asked
God to see if she shoul be
baptized and received her answer
of yes. When we first invited her
for the 18th, she was very
shocked and said it was too early
and that she wanted another
week, but we told her to ask God
if she should this week, and she
said she knew she should, but
was afraid of the answer because
she knew it was yes, but she
prayed and asked and then was
very excited and glad that we had
pushed her for the 18th in the
end. Her two daughters also
helped a lot becauase they were
recent converts as well and really
helped and pushed her along the
path, and it was actually my first
baptism that I got toi baptize in
and it was amazing, and the spirit
was felt super strong, especially
when she bore a powerfull
testimony in the end of her
conversion and how sure she is
that the church is true and she
knows thta all the others are false
now.

An amazing miracle this week

was the Baptism of Martin! He
wasn't our investigator, but I had
worked a lot with him when he
first was introduced to the gospel
and have seen him progress a
ton! The even more amazing
thing is that he is in a wheelchair
and it not able to move very well.
When he was younger some
doctors accidentally injured his
central nervous system and now
he is handicapped. But that didn't
stop him from wanting to be
baptized! He learned about the
church and felt the Spirit and
decided to follow the Savior into
the waters of baptism. The
Baptism itself was incredible. We
had 3 elders in the water to help
him with everything and in the
end it went perfectly. There was
the incredible spirit that every
baptism brings and it was just
overall an amazing experience.
He has such a great spirit and
even though he can't talk very
well you can feel his desires to
follow Christ and continue on
persevering to the end.
I am alive and I am happy.
I really like how my companion can
always find something to testify
about during the lessons.
Oftentimes, when I lose my tongue, I
know that I can always count on my
companion to bring back the spirit so
I can know what to say. Innocent
continues to progress and be such a
miracle for us. He has received all of
the lessons except for priesthood,
which we will teach tomorrow. He is
so excited for his baptism this
Saturday, and I am so excited to see
my first as well.

Esta semana ha sido un

completo milagro!
Casi conseguimos las 5 pautas!
Martn se bautiz! Un hombre en
una silla de ruedas y con
deficiencias fsicas! Lo tuvimos
que bautizar entre 3 Elderes y fue
un bautismo muy muy muy
espiritual y bonito.
Le tengo buenas noticias, tuve
mi primer bautismo y tuve la
oportunidad de conferir el
Espritu Santo ayer por primera
vez. Fue una experiencia nica e
increble que me esforzare en la
misin para traer mas almas a l.
Ella se llama Melanie, tiene 18
aos, es ecuatoriana, tiene una
ta muy activa en la iglesia y
mediante ella llego a nosotros. Yo
solo la conoc por 2 semanas y
pude ver la ultima parte de su
proceso de conversin. Escuchar
su testimonio en su casa y en el
plpito despus del servicio fue
subliminal. Ella por lo general es
un poco tmida pero en esos
momentos se le vea con mucha
fuerza y conviccin en sus
palabras que pareca miembro de
muchos aos. Ella es una
miembro de oro y estoy seguro
que seguir progresando en la
iglesia. Muchas gracias
presidente por haberme asignado
Santander como mi primera rea

Milagros
Well, the miracle of this week is
the way that the ward is working
with us. As we are building up our
relationship with the ward, we
are seeing that they are inviting
more people to church, to
activities to Noche de Hogar, to
everything. We see the blessings
from praising in public as we
thank members for their help,
give them a little gift and let them
know that they are making a
difference, and we arent just
taking their friends and leaving
the members in the dark, we are
including the members in are
planning and they are helping us
plan the lessons for their friends
who are learning, which invites
the Spirit more and increases our
relationship. We have the
baptism of Jessica this weekend.
She is so prepared. She has been
embraced by the JAS and has a
strong testimony of the BoM and
knows she wants to be baptized
and says that she doesnt
understand all the
commandments, but she knows
that they make sense. She just
wants to be baptized, and she is
so ready.
This has been a wonderful
week! A week full of miracles and
blessings from the lord. It first
started off having interviews with
you and hermana dayton. That
was such a blessing to have that
time to spend with you and

get to know you and have that

one one time. I really loved it and
i can not wait for the next time
we have interviews with you.
The next thing is we had a
baptism for jean pierre and his
baptism was so wonderful and i
will never forget that day. Jean
pierre is such a wondeful person
and i know for sure with out a
doubt that he will be a wonderful
member of this church. He was so
excited when he received the
holy ghost. He was truely
prepared by the lord and the lord
did truely bless us with jean.

This weekend Innocent will be

getting baptized. I'm very happy
for him, but at the same time it's
like I can't believe it. I remember
one of the first lessons we taught
him and he said he wasn't sure
about being baptized because he
would need permission from his
parents, he is 33. Then i asked
him last week about it and how
his family felt about his decision
and he told us that his family
thought it was a good thing he
was doing. We finished teaching
him all the commandment and
now we just need a few things
from lesson five. He will be
getting his interview this week
and he should be set.

This week was fantastic! To

start off our miracle story:
Our 14 year old investigator
named Gaby is solid. His mom is
less active and him and his sister
are trying to be baptized. Gaby
will be baptized on the 1 of
August so that's exciting! He even
is bringing his less active mom
back to church! So they went to
Madrid his weekend and we're
going to come back Monday but
Gaby said " mom I can't miss
church!" So they came back and
he was there Sunday in a white
shirt and a big old smile haha.
