Ocean Grove author Heather Gallagher hopes people will spare a

thought for mums during Mental Health Week next month.
Heather has spoken to numerous groups locally about her experience of post-natal depression while
launching her new picture book Happy Pants. Illustrated by Barwon Heads artist Liz McGrath,
the book is designed to help children understand what their mum is going through.
One out of seven Australian mothers are affected by the condition and Heather hopes the book will
bring solace and inspiration to those effected.
Happy Pants is about a little boy who adores his Mummy. But when she comes home with his baby
brother, she seems to have become a different person. The boy feels betrayed and confused, and
sets about trying to make Mummy better
Heather suffered PND following the births of both her daughters, now aged 11 and 14.
Ironically, the depression became a catalyst for her to act. She founded a playgroup for Mum's with
PND, Parents Overcoming Depression with Support (PODS). And went on to launch her career as a
children's writer.
'With Happy Pants I wanted to let kids know that while they can't make Mummy better, things will
improve with time and love,' she said. 'There will come a day when Mum can put on her happy
pants again!'
Happy Pants is available for purchase online at www.wombatbooks.com.au

COUNT
ON ME
Let me be your other pair of hands

For starters, progressing our campaign

to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety
in Barwon Heads in consultation with
VicRoads. Plus our ongoing discussion
(perhaps 'war of attrition' may be more
accurate) with CoGG regarding the
maintenance of our footpaths so our
residents can walk safety to and from the
shops; or our ongoing concerns about
dangerously narrow and poorly surfaced
corners carrying large buses; not to mention
a request that the community again consider
lobbying for a safe cyclist lane down
Sheepwash Road; or on-going concerns
about parachutists landing so close to the
Barwon Heads Rd out at the airport; or our
questions to authorities about the seeming
crime wave sweeping through Barwon
Heads and what the community can do to
protect their property.
Please note that upon request VicRoads
is running a second public consultation
afternoon on its options for pedestrian and
cyclist safety on Thursday September 10th so
more resident can comment on their plans.
Check details in VicRoads public notice in
this edition of TH.

after three years as president I will be
standing aside at our September AGM.
The last three years have been full of
challenges and frustrations but also interest,
excitement and satisfaction. I have worked
with a loyal and capable committee and
received support from many quarters. A
special thank you to our editor Trish Clayton
for the support she has given the BHA and
me personally over the last three years.
And of course thank you to our members
who have rejoined, or are in the process
of rejoining for 2015-16, who stand by the
importance of the association and maintain
their interest in the advancement of the town
they live in. Thank you all.
Next meeting: AGM Monday 21st

this campaign.

Our August Guest was Gary McPike

General Manage Barwon Coast

was pleased to meet Gary and hear about
his hand-on practical experience in
community enterprises and his open and

Unsafe Footpaths Campaign.

Representatives of the BHA Committee
accompanied by residents John Romeril,
Diane Dower, and Bonita Williams
appeared before Council at its now monthly
meeting (August 25th) to ask why CoGG is
failing its responsibility to maintain safe
footpaths in Barwon Heads. We also asked
why, after two years of correspondence,
there has been no action to rectify the
dangerous corner of Geelong Rd East and
Carr St. This corner is especially dangerous
now we have large MrHarrys buses running
both north and south. Council's response
was almost word for word predictable, it is

thoughtful approach to his new job. We

thank Gary for a most informative
presentation and wish him well in his new
position.
Gary reminded us that Barwon Coast is
financially autonomous and relies on
campers to pay for revenue to cover most of
its costs. Current projects and priorities
include developing a master plan for the
Barwon Heads Football Netball Club; repair
& rebuild of the Barwon Heads Seawall &
Promenade; the redevelopment of the Surf
Beach Complex at Ocean Grove; coastal
erosion control (and in particular discussion
of the destruction of the stairs at 31W
Cylinders and the closure of the carpark.)
Not an easy fix. Government has asked for a
Coastal Hazard Assessment to be carried
out prior to any work being carried out. BC is
also undertaking a review and renewal of its
Coastal Management Plan
The following Q & A session with Gary
covered a variety of questions from sand
build up, design of the new sea wall,
pressure from ongoing development and
dogs on beaches. (Please see our August

BARWON HEADS

Changes and Chances

With new racks, and a new
arrangement of them, our shop is
starting to look more up-market.
With the thirty-fifth year of operation approaching, other
innovations were suggested. One volunteer suggested
that we purchase new squared-off box-like display
cabinets, and three volunteers then assembled these
new fittings, and suddenly, we have moved further into
being smarter-looking.
It was by chance that we also received some wonderful
china.....Royal Doulton, etc., which looks just so much
better displayed in our new fittings.
Do come in and see what you think! I am always torn
between knowing that some people like to fossick in an
Op Shop, and being aware that many excellent items

languish because they disappear among the myriads of

other things we have for sale. Meanwhile, our stocks of
clothing are always being replenished, and even though
we are now into spring, I fear that it will be some time
before we feel we can manage without warm gear.
Another change taking place almost constantly, thanks
to our volunteer who really enjoys fixing, filling and
painting, is that of regular maintenance on our older
buildings. Our handy-person Sonja was just delighted
the other day. I had reported about the loss of her Ryobi
drill, some months ago. Kind John Campbell who comes
to his holiday home on an irregular basis, had recently
read about that in an older copy of T.H. He realised that
amongst some older tools he had bought from our shop
was a bright green Ryobi drill. We dont know how it
came to be there, but when John brought it in, Sonja was
rapt and delighted to be able to thank him personally.

Not all of our stories are as good as that.

We were all furious to find that several single bad
mattresses had been dumped.
We called for the CCT images, and discovered that there
was no number-plate of a car, which may have allowed
us to have its owner to be charged with dumping.

This sneaky person had WALKED the

mattresses in, and was unidentifiable, so
we were very unhappy.
Some of our volunteers did point out that our notice
warning people that we cannot take mattresses,

electrical goods etc. can only be seen as you walk

towards it, BUT we all know that mattresses are no
longer accepted at Op Shops.
So it was most fortunate that Win, a long-time volunteer
had rung friends at the O.G. Op Shop, The Dove, run
by the Uniting Church.
They were able to advise of an organisation called
Encompass, which sent people to collect the
mattresses. These and any other reasonably good
pieces of furniture are then donated to refugee families.
Given that our government does so little for these poor
people, I was so pleased with this good outcome.

I was even more chuffed to read of a new initiative

in Melbourne called The Food Justice Truck.
A couple, (wife Katy Barfield formerly ran Second Bite,
another food distribution idea) now sell unused food to
the public in Melbournes City Square, and the money is
used to cross-subsidise food for asylum-seekers, who
live on as little as $3 a day.
Having also read the other day just how incredibly our
Barwon Heads homes have increased in value following
real estate rises, we are indeed a very privileged group,
and whatever we can do for those who are not so
fortunate, will be so appreciated.
Perhaps I should end by writing So endeth this sermon.
Please forgive me, and come to see us all at the shop,
and get the bargains!
God bless you

A return visit from our very popular

JAZZ DUO, ISAAC BARTER & KYM
DILLON, was our August concert in the
Anglican Church, Barwon Heads! Zac
on double bass & Kym on piano once
again gave us a great afternoon of their
laid back & their intimate style as they read each other so well.
It is really obvious how much they enjoy their special time
together & a good audience really appreciates them!

They began with Jazz Bluesa Miles Davis piece from the world renowned
jazz artistAll Blues which was one of Zacs first jazz pieces & obviously a
favourite! They followed on with Days of Wine & Roses with Zac performing
the melody on the double bass which was no mean feat for this large
instrument & an interesting interpretation! Round Midnight came next &
produced some lovely rich harmonies & flowing melodies. Well You
Neednt was a great fun & quirky piece with a variety of changes of rhythms
& key changes. Sandy was another cruisey blues another relaxed &
flowing melody. This was followed by a brilliant piano solo by Kym of the JS
Bach Fugue in f minor & was very much appreciated by the audience,
following the theme moving around in many inventive forms.
Nature Boy was a lovely familiar melody & is termed, (in fun) as a cruise ship
samba at the Blue Notes bar! A swinging Autumn Leaves was another
special performance with a lovely flowing feel for reminiscence of an earlier
era like many other jazz offerings. Matt Damons style was the choice for My
Funny Valentinewhich is always a popular number. They wound up their
performance with Caravan ; would they chose Duke Ellington or Ella
Fitzgerald? Latin version & return to swing? Lets see how it turns out; We still
enjoyed the old classical favourites & it was a popular finale to a great
afternoon of fine music!
Our next concert gives a forum to hard-working students who have put in
years of practice for their love of music & are preparing for their Year 12
exams. The Geelong College representatives will perform vocal & cello solos
& a string quartet which includes Mr Ben Castle & students from Christian
College which will prove to be an entertaining program. The date is Sunday,
13th September at 2.30pm in the Anglican Church, Barwon Heads. Do come
& support them & stay for afternoon tea following the concert. Donation:
Friends/Visitors:$10; Visitors: $15.

One of the things that happen when

youve been a guide leader for 40 years
is that everywhere you go in your
community and beyond, youll run into
someone who is or has been a guide.

Guide leader, Vicki Wills is passionate about guides and

is quick to tell me that the girl guides is the biggest all
female organisation in the world.
Vickis guides, compadres and parents recently had a special
celebration of Vickis 40 years of service to the guides and our
chat followed over Starfish coffee & a muffin..
Leader of the Barwon Heads Group, Vicki came here to help
out the then leader who subsequently married and moved
interstate and Vicki stayed on.
Guiding is Vickis passion and she truly loves the life and
teaching the 4 pillars of guiding which are:1.Practical - learning to use your hands on various
projects including woodworking..
2.Physical - Outdoors, camping, hiking etc.
3.Self - Life skills, leadership group dynamics.
4. People - Learning about the world.
The guides have been learning about South East
Asia and far North Europe where they prepare and
eat some food and learn some language & customs
from these countries.
Vicki has travelled widely over her long guiding
career to countries like India and America and she
loves educating young people in the ways of the
world.
Theres a camp coming up in November at Moggs
Creek and the guides are preparing for long walks,

anger, for three hours she curled into

herself. A venomous ball who couldn't
come out. As she howled and hurled
herself against the injustices of the
world I asked for an apology. She
screamed from behind the barred door,
"Sorry!"
But I knew she didn't mean it. Not like
she had meant the arrow words of hate.
The words that hurt both our hearts.

So, she threw "I hate you" at me.

It was the first time she'd ever directed
the words at me. She virtually spat the
sentence out.
Six times she said it.
Six "hates" in all.
Each sentence dipped in potent poison.
It felt like 6 hard hate arrows furrowing
deep inside my chest.
It really hurts when your walking heart
beats out of rhythm with you.
She said it because she didn't agree
with me. And that I ruined her 7 year old
fun. After the words had carved their
way from her lips to my heart, she ran
to her room. Where consumed by her

Finally, as the day folded into the early

spring night, she moved the stacked
toys that barred her bedroom door. Her
cheeks were red and her eyes swollen.
Her hair had fallen over her face. Her
hollers were whispers, her hard anger
had softened.
Leaving her shattered and scared and
sad.
"I, I, I don't know how to say sorry" she
breathed as she held all of herself in her
shoulders.
And because there were no words, she
hugged me. She hugged me as hard as
she could. As she hugged me, she put
her head on my heart.

And other times, the words that we're
looking for - well they're just not there.
But our bodies are a potent way to bypass words and create connection.
We can hug with our eyes. We can hold
with our hands. We can say "I'm sorry"
and "I love you" with a hug.
As my 7 year old hugged into my belly
with the whole of her being, I
remembered a time when we were
inseperable. When she was within my
womb she now craddled. When our
beating hearts were a rhythm as one. I
realised, this is the first time she has
really hated me. And it probably won't
be the last. Beacuse she won't always
agree. And I will again ruin her fun.
But at least she knows how to tell me
love. Even if not yet with her words.
She knows how to tell me with the
whole of herself.
And she remembers she is my walking
heart.

WHAT'S COOKING AT
THE LOBSTER POT?

LAST FOUR LIMBS OF YOGA

PRATYAHARA, DHARANA, DHYANA, SAMADHI
In previous articles I have shared that The
Eight Limbs of Yoga were created by
Patanjali in the last millennium. I have
chosen to write about the last four Limbs in
one article because as each Limb is
mastered there is a natural progression
towards the next Limb.
According to Patanjali, Pratyahara (the fifth Limb of
Yoga) is the bridge between the first four Limbs of Yoga
and the last three Limbs. In the first four Limbs we learn to
understand and control the body and our thoughts. When
we reach the fifth Limb of Yoga (Pratyahara) we are
beginning to cast our focus within and begin the journey
along the spiritual path. The last four Limbs and their
meanings follow:-

Arise good people.

Look out the window for the light is bright and
sunny. The seasonal alarm clock has gone off.
Hibernation time is over. Mid-summer is only
118 sleeps away.
The Friends of the Lobster Pot have not been
to the land of Nod and are acutely aware of the
approaching summer and have engaged in
working bees to refurbish, refresh and make
the Barwon Estuary Heritage Centre ready for
a new experience there. It's the green building
on the river next to 'At the Heads' restaurant I'm
talking about. It opens from Boxing Day to the
Australia Day long weekend 1.00p.m. to 4.00
p.m. daily. You should plan to visit now. If you
wish to share your interest in the natural and
cultural history of our estuary you will enjoy
joining the friends group. You can contact
them through Barwon Coast. Call in at the
office or phone Maddie Glynne (52541118).
Give yourself time to dust off your sandals and
shake the moths out of your shorts though.

Fifth Limb- Pratyahara (Withdrawal of the Senses)

Sixth Limb- Dharana (one-pointed concentration)
Seventh Limb- Dhyana (meditation)
Eighth Limb- Samadhi (enlightenment)
We can use the following exercise to explore the above
Limbs further:Begin by sitting comfortably OR you can lie on your back.
Close your eyes and either place hands with palms
facing up or your preferred position. We begin by
connecting to our Pranayama (breath control). As we do
this we begin to practise Pratyahara (withdrawal of our
senses). One way to connect to this withdrawal is by
focussing on the furthest sound that you can hear.
Acknowledge that the sound is there and then move your
attention away it. Then move to the next sound
acknowledge it and let it go. At the same time, taking
notice of any smells or sensations on your skin and also
acknowledging and letting them go.
Continue doing this as you begin to get closer and closer
to your body and you withdraw your inner focus from your
body to your mind.

This is when we
progress to
practising
Dharana (onep o i n t e d
concentration).
The mind is
being trained to
concentrate
solely on one subject. We begin to acknowledge any
thoughts that appear and then let them go. As a point of
focus you can cast the eyes internally towards the centre
of your forehead and focus on one spot. Some people
see a small speck of light when they do this (this is known
as the jewel in the lotus or the light in the head). Other
people like to use the breath as a point of focus OR
silently chanting SO HUM over and over.
As we achieve Dharana we naturally progress to Dhyana
(meditation). Meditation is the ability to BE. The onepointed concentration has served its purpose to still the
mind. It is now tranquil and the connection to all things as
one is realised. This is Yoga. Being present.
Not looking forwards or backwards just
BEING.......Experiencing bliss!
Once we have practised Dhyana over a period of time we
gradually develop to reach the eighth Limb of Yoga
Samadhi (enlightenment). We have achieved the ability
to move into a state of awareness even though we are
experiencing Dhyana. Out intuition is heightened and
there is awareness of complete peace.............
We have all heard the saying peeling away the layers of
the onion. I consider the process of working through the
Eight Limbs of Yoga to apply to this expression. We
embark on a journey of exploration, self-realisation and
purpose.
Healing from the inside out.

'CYLINDERS' BEACH
ACCESS CLOSED DUE TO
STORM DAMAGE
High tides and large swell in recent weeks have
combined to cause a significant slope failure around
beach access at 31W on Thirteenth Beach Road
Barwon Heads, known locally as 'Cylinders'.
This resulted in the collapse of a large portion, at least
three sets of stairs and landings, of the five-flight
timber staircase leading to the beach on Tuesday 4th
August.
Barwon Coast Chair Phil Emery said the remaining
staircase was now closed for public safety and that the
structure was a significant loss that would be difficult
and costly to replace.
Barwon Coast has identified a serious safety and
environmental risk in people accessing the beach at
'Cylinders' due to the damaged staircase and unstable
dune face.
Barwon Coast is working with the Department of
Land, Water and Planning and coastal engineers to
investigate how and if we can repair these stairs. We
face a major technical challenge in terms of design
and construction, Mr Emery said.
In the meantime we urge people not to access the
dunes or beach at this point as they can easily make
the situation far worse and very dangerous with
movements of large volumes of sand.
This is a popular first break at 31W and unfortunately
some surfers have been ignoring warning signs,
jumping the fence and skimming down the dune,
causing more damage on this failing slope.
"To help avoid more erosion of the dunes and risk to
public safety, the car park at 31W (Cylinders) has now
been closed to members of the public.
"Beach-goers are urged to use nearby 30W and 32W
(Beacon) car parks and access points instead, until
further notice.

Dir: Ken Loach.
This bitter-sweet comedy follows protagonist
Robbie who has just narrowly escaped a prison

distillery while serving a community service order
inspires him to seek a way out of his troubles.

Busy bees make 250
Borrow and Bring Back
bags
Ah no, youve left your jute
bag/reuseable shopping
bags at home again. Youll
to have to take the
shopping home in a plastic
bag, even though youd
prefer not to.

This dilemma will soon be a thing of the past in

Barwon Heads when reusable bags are made
available in the main street for borrowing, free of
charge.
Shoppers will be able to grab a hand-made bag
from a container inside a shop a couple of
locations are intended and when they next visit
that shop, return the bag.
The first 30 bags were produced by students at
Bellarine Secondary College as part of their World
Environment Day activities in June. A further 220
bags have been made during July and August,
being sewn from donated materials (old council
banners, curtains & upholstery offcuts) by keen
locals at community sewing bees or at home. Maria
from Kittos jumped on board donating some
beautiful Marimekko fabric to use.
Its an idea picked up from a Queensland project
called Boomerang Bags, and is the next phase of
our towns plastic bag free campaign. While the
take-up of the campaigns locally designed jute
bags in 2013 was very positive and plastic bag use

dropped significantly, the forgetting factor has crept in,

and plastic bag use has risen. We needed a new
approach to achieve our let our sea be plastic bag free
goal.
Having passed our initial target of 200 bags thanks to the
many people who donated materials, time and skills, we
are our now finalising where and how they will be
located.
In the meantime, we are keen to increase the numbers of

bags. If youd like to help, you can:

join one of the fortnightly Saturday sewing

bees held at the Community Arts Garden, 1-4pm on 5th &
19th September from 1-4pm (jobs for everyone - cutters
and sewers)

do some cutting of material, stamping of

patches or sewing of bags at home
Contact Faye on 0417 518 685 if you would like to share
your skills and time.

Crispy skin ocean trout on raw salad

The weathers hasnt been quite warm enough to encourage

salad eating but as Spring springs, we dip our toes back in to
crispy crunchy vegetable medleys to not only satisfy hunger but
also to eat mindfully...that is, with maximum health and energy in
mind.
Often, our fishmonger will sell big fillets of fish - enough to easily
feed 2 people - so I halve them lengthways then make a fish rub
with ground herbs/salt/black pepper...I pressed the skin of this
fresh trout onto a light bed of the above using dried thyme &
crushed fennel seeds...preparing the salad was easy...
RAW SALAD
lay a bed of rocket in your bowls then through the food processor
chop one carrot, quarter of a red cabbage, quarter of a white
cabbage, half a daikon radish, 2 trimmed spring onions...place
into a large bowl, add a small handful of fruit & nut mix and dress
with...
DRESSING
In a jar, 2 tbs olive or macadamia oil, 1 tsp balsamic, squeeze half
a blood orange, half a lemon, 1 tsp hot mustard then shake until
well combined...top rocket with salad raw salad...
TROUT
heat a heavy pan on med high with a tbs olive oil then fry the trout skin side down - for 3 minutes until skin is crispy...watching to
make sure it doesnt burn...turn and fry a further minute...remove
from pan and rest for a couple of minutes before laying on top of
salad...serve with a wedge of lemon & sea salt G

Hello sweetie!
Palm sugar...
is it healthy?

Indonesian desserts involve fresh

fruit or pancakes with the addition of
palm sugar which tasted like caramel
so we were a bit nervous about eating
it because, as we know, caramel is
sugar/butter and although yummy is
eaten at our peril!
Palm sugar on the other hand is a
nutrient-rich, low-glycemic crystalline
sweetener that looks, tastes, dissolves
and melts almost exactly like sugar, but
it's completely natural and unrefined.
It comes from the flowers growing high on
coconut trees (above), which are opened to
collect their liquid flower nectar. This nectar is
then air-dried to form a crystalline sugar that's
naturally brown in color and naturally rich in a
number of key vitamins, minerals and
phytonutrients, including potassium, zinc,
iron, and vitamins B1, B2, B3 and B6.
It is never refined or bleached like white sugar.
So the nutrients it was made with are still
there. That's rare for sweeteners, most of
which are highly refined. Even stevia is highly
refined in its white powder form (real stevia is
a green herb).
Palm sugar is not a kilojoule-free sweetener.
It has kilojoules like any carbohydrate, but due
to its relatively low glycemic index, its kjs are
absorbed into the bloodstream at a
significantly slower rate than regular refined
sugar. This property should be of interest to
anyone who is monitoring their blood sugar
levels and attempting to avoid blood sugar
spikes. Palm sugar isnt medicine; it's a food
with a surprisingly low GI, considering its
sweet taste.
Heat to dissolve then use in place of caramel
or on pancakes with sliced banana or
pineapple and a sprinkle of toasted coconut.

It grows best in full sun, except during hot weather, when some afternoon shade
helps keep the leaves from becoming bitter. Even small gardens can provide a
bounty of delicious lettuces as long as you employ a few simple strategies.
1. Prepare soil by mixing a -inch layer of compost and a sprinkle of organic
fertilizer (apply as directed on the product label) into the top six inches of soil.
2. Sow lettuce seeds -inch deep in rows spaced 12 to 18 inches apart. Thick
seeding (about a tablespoon of seeds per 10-foot row) results in plenty of
thinnings to eat as the lettuces grow. Keep the soil moist until the seeds
germinate.
3. Once the plants have grown two to four true leaves, thin seedlings to four
inches apart. Thin again when the seedlings begin to touch shoulders. For
heading types, the final spacing should be at least a foot; lettuce will not form a
head if crowded.
4. Grow lettuce in the cooler months, or plant it in the shade of taller crops. Heat
causes lettuce to turn bitter and leathery.
5. Keep lettuces hydrated. When rain is insufficient, provide one to two inches of
water per week. Plants in pots dry out more quickly than those in the ground.
6. Plant successive crops. A series of small plantings, every two to three weeks,
ensures a steady supply of salad greens.
7. Rotate crops. Growing lettuce in the same spot each year depletes the soil
and eventually results in weak growth.

from Australia and Brazil

Figuring out where insects spend their time, how far they
travel and what they are doing has traditionally been
very difficult.
But our micro-sensing technology can reveal this
information in unprecedented detail. As part of our world
first swarm sensing research program, we have fitted
tiny micro-sensors to thousands of bees in Tasmania, in
order to monitor their movements and their environment.
close shot of bee on white flower, wearing tiny mircochip
"back pack"
The sensors are tiny radio frequency identification
sensors that work in a similar way to a vehicles e-tag,
recording when the insect passes a particular
checkpoint. The information is then sent remotely to a
central location and we can build a comprehensive
three-dimensional model and visualise how the insects
move through their landscape.
The sensors are 2.5mm x 2.5mm in size and weigh
about 5 milligrams each.
A new generation as small as 1.5mm x 1.5mm is being
designed; less is more, as smaller sensors will interfere
less with the insect's behaviour.

The Results

Bees are social insects that return to the same point and
operate on a very predictable schedule. Any change in
their behaviour indicates a change in their environment.
If we can model their movements, we'll be able to
recognise very quickly when their activity shows
variation and identify the cause.
This will allow farmers and fruit growers to increase the
benefit received from this free pollination service, and
will also allow us to monitor for any biosecurity risks
such as Varroa mite.
With thousands of bees in Tasmania already tagged
with our sensors, working with our partners Vale
Institute of Technology in Brazil we have also taken the
technology to the Amazon, allowing us to monitor and
compare behaviour between bee colonies in the two
regions.
Our sensors, which one day may be used on fruit flies
and mosquitoes also, will be able to capture information
about our world with unprecedented density and in
locations not previously accessible.
The next generation of sensors will be even more
advanced - generating power from insect movement
and storing the energy in batteries, as well as tracking
capability that will follow an insect's movement in realtime.
Source:

If bees didnt exist in our world today,

it would look like a very different place
and our lives wouldnt be nearly the
same either. These industrious
insects have been around for roughly
125 million years (give or take 15
million years or so) and although bee
numbers are sadly declining, the
remaining survivors continue to act
as invaluable
resources to our planet
and its other residents
in numerous ways.
Both plants and animals alike owe many thanks
to the bees of the world but perhaps humans owe
them the most appreciation. Our relationship with
them began as early as the year 6000 BCE in
Spain when humans began utilizing the fruits of
their labor: since then, weve been taking
advantage of their honey as a food source,
medicine and form of currency, wax as a sealant
and for candle-making, and of course, a bounty
of actual fruits, vegetables and nuts.

UPDATE

WILDLIFE ON THE BEACH

Lyn Martin Photography

Its that time of the year again when beach

nesting birds such as the Hooded Plovers are
gearing up to commence their breeding
season. August to April is critical high use
period for wildlife along our coastline. It is
important that all beach users understand the
potential threat they pose to wildlife resting or
nesting along our shores. Of greater
importance is understanding that dogs are
inquisitive by nature and are seen as predators
by our wildlife. We encourage all to be vigilant
for wildlife on our beaches, and keep dogs on a
lead at least 50 metres away from wildlife on
our beaches.

GREEN ARMY EXPERIENCE

Barwon Coast gained Federal funding for the
placement of a CoAct Green Army crew to
work alongside our staff for 26 weeks to
improve biodiversity and visitor infrastructure
along our coastline. The crew finished July,
but during their time were engaged in pest
plant/animal work, fencing, dune restoration,
plant identification, professional development
days and construction works along access
ways, lookout platforms and trails. During the
26 weeks, the crew also gained accreditation
in OHS, applying chemicals, treating weeds
and participating in environmentally

In late May this year

sections of the Barwon
Heads Seawall were
damaged by storm
events, revealing
significant voids under the
promenade; this resulted
in about 200 metres of the
promenade being closed
due to concerns for public
safety.
Since the failure of
sections of the seawall in May, Barwon Coast has worked
continuously toward a solution that would enable the
promenade to be opened as soon as is practical.
Working with coastal engineers and the Department of
Environment of Land Water and Planning (DELWP), a
design response has been finalised and timber ordered.
Currently a construction tender is being finalised.
Barwon Coast is confident the rebuild of almost 200 lineal
metres of the seawall and the promenade path can be
completed prior to the summer season. Greater detail on
the project, including expected timelines, will be available
in coming weeks after the tender has been let.

WEATHER DAMAGE ALONG OUR COAST CYLINDERS - 31W

In early August high tides and large swell combined to
cause a significant slope failure around beach access
31W, aka Cylinders, resulting in the loss of a large portion
of the staircase.
This is a significant loss that will be difficult and costly to
replace. Barwon Coast will engage coastal engineers to
investigate response solutions.
For now we ask that people do not assess the beach at
this point as human impacts can easily make the situation
far worse and be very dangerous with movements of large
volumes of sand likely.
I encourage you to contact Barwon Coast to discuss any
issues related to coastal management in our region by
phoning 5254 1118.

BARWON HEADS CYCLING CLUB

With the Tour de France finally over, the

cyclists of the BHCC have finally caught
up on all their sleep and started to appear
back at the CFA at 5.45 in the morning.

It has been very cold, wet and windy this winter.

However, the riding numbers continue to grow. Recent
recruits to the line-up include Quirky, Big Nick from OG,
and Mark who comes all the way from Geelong! Joining
Nick from the Grove are regulars Hysen and Ben. Also,
Jan Bakelants makes regular appearances, especially
on cold mornings. Unfortunately, there have been a few
of the team who have not been seen for a while: Griffo,
Rambo, GT and Jules. And Jeff? Who the fluff is Jeff?
Injuries to Gilly and Mikey have seen them off the road
for a while, but returning soon. Sadly, recent retiree
Gibbo is currently stuck on 50 rides in eighth place on
the ladder. We all miss you Gibbo, but at least we have a
chance to win the sprint again if Simon is in bed. Wiggle
and Nev are starting to make regular appearances once
again.
Anyway, back to the Tour de France. Wiggle was so
excited that he organised six nights to watch the six best
stages at various team members' houses. He made it to
them all, eating everyone out of house and home. After
about four of the TDF nights, Wiggle put together a
ladder. Yes, another ladder. This boy loves a ladder
more than..... who? So at this point in my writing, I
Googled 'who uses ladders for work?' and the third
response lead me to a Family Feud website.
Name a person who uses a ladder at work? Survey
says....
1. house painter
2. painter
3. Building
4. carpenter
5. construction
6. firefighter
7. roofer
8. electrician.
Anyway, Wiggle likes a ladder more than any of these
people. So he put together this one after four stages of
the BHCC Tour de France social evenings. And, here it
is....

TDF Ladder
1. Wiggle: Huge contender, ultra-consistent and always
there at the end when it counts. Currently wears the Yellow
Jersey.
2. Greggy: Wiggle's biggest threat. Great climber who
knows when to attack. Currently in the Polka-dot Jersey.
3. Graham N: Has had some big stages but has been quiet
in one or two. Has sacrificed his own ambitions to aid the
performance of his team members. Currently leads points
competition and thus wears the Green Jersey.
4. Quirky: Huge first up effort. Wearing the White Jersey
and should hold it all the way to the Champs-lyses.
5. Andy Mac: The great pretender of the peloton. Just
when you think he's going to threaten, he cracks. Has
struggled in the last kilometres of the high mountain
stages. However, wears the Jersey for Most Combatitive
Rider.
6. Nev: Infectious enthusiasm but lacks consistency. Has
been caught napping when the big guns attack in the high
mountains.
7. Lawrie M: Has only shown his talents spasmodically.
His team will have higher expectations next year.
8. Gilly: Has performed admirably despite injury. His
efforts have drawn interest from other teams.
9. Goldie: Immense talent, but has hardly been sighted
this Tour. Should do well on the sprint into Paris. Needs to
develop a greater commitment to his team.
10. Guyser: Has struggled in the cold conditions on the
high peaks.
11. Mikey: Has struggled throughout with injury. Will be in
contention in 2016.
12. Jase H: Withdrew before the Tour hit the big mountain
stages. Looking to the Vuelta.
13. Graeme H & Weavy: Not riding in the Tour this year but
will make a special appearance on the Champs-lyses.
(Rumour has it will be involved in the presentations)
14. Gibbo: Recent retirement. Would have been a huge

FOOTBALL

BARWON HEADS
BOWLING CLUB
Celebrating 43 years

September is here and with it comes

the change of activities around the
Club. Months of social bowling is
now gearing toward Pennant bowls.
Our Club was fortunate to be able to host Ocean Grove
twice a week whilst their synthetic green was replaced.
Mostly the weather was good, cold but O.K. and all
seemed to enjoy our green.
We have again had terrific support from Torquay
bowlers over winter as their grass greens have a rest.
Winter bowling culminated again with the Battle of the
Bridge against Ocean Grove.
After a very successful Battle of the Bridge campaign in
the local footy this year, and the inclusion of some very
good Torquay assistance, we were very confident of
success.

Unfortunately, no chocolates, led by Ron Todd

and Alby Townslagers rinks Grove were a bit
too good. But well be back.
A great day was had by all.
Coming dates to remember: Midweek Pennant
starts 29th September, Saturday Pennant October
10th and social day against
Inverleigh on September 20th.
Our refurbished shelters are looking good, thanks to
Ken and his team.
More pennant info next month.
Until next time, good bowling.

By the time you receive this issue the home and away
season will be over. From a club perspective the season
has been a huge success, the vibe around the club has
been fantastic. Success on the field certainly translates
to success off the field. The Under 16s, Ressies &
Seniors are playing finals the Colts are still fighting for a
place in the five.

August 8th saw the ladies of the town let their

hair down for the annual Ladies Day. The home
game against Ammos is the day the girls have a day out
but also raise money for breast cancer.
With 72 bottles of champers consumed and about 3K
raised Id say they had a successful day. Well done
Bec.
Our Under 16s are in the Grand Final. Congratulations to
Sam and his boys on their fantastic season. At seasons
end they finished 2nd on the ladder the position they held
for the majority of the year. Since last months edition they
have beaten Newtown by 32 points, had a hiccup against
Ammos going down by 21 points and got back on the
winners list beating Ocean Grove in their last game of the
season by 29 points. Their next game saw them front up
to Ocean Grove again in the semi-final. Playing down at
Drysdale they got off to the perfect start kicking 4 goals to
none in the first quarter. They were never headed for the
remainder of the game. The final winning margin of 26
points was a fitting result. The Grand Final was played on
the 29th of August against South Barwon.
The Colts are fighting for a finals berth which is also a
huge effort considering its their first year in Division 1.
Apart from 2 standout sides in the competition the rest of
the sides are competitive and that on their day anybody
can beat anybody. Leopold was a great come from
behind win, 18 points down at time we stormed home to
win by 7 points. Torquay was a dirty day going down by
71 points. The old saying a weeks a long time in footy
was true when we watched a different team account for
the highly fancied Ammos the following match, it was
their best team effort for some weeks. Continuing on
from their last game they were on top of South Barwon in
the first half. After the long break they lost their way for a
10 minute period and let South slam on 5 goals. The last
quarter saw them rally again but the damage was done
finally going down by 13 points. Still in the mix for a finals
berth Bell Park was a must win and win they did. We got
away to a good start and held a 30 point buffer for most of
the game. Bell Park came home with the wind in the last
but we held on to win by 18 points. Last game of the year
is against second side St. Marys a win and we hold on to
5th spot its going to be a big challenge for the boys so
good luck.
The Reserves finished the season in second spot on the
ladder winning 16 games in what was another fantastic
effort. Round 14 was Port at home keeping them
goalless till the last quarter we won by 28 points in a low
scoring game. With 10 players missing from the previous
week it shows that the club has great depth unlike
previous years. Round 15 Torquay at Torquay saw the
battle for outright top spot. With players still missing and
not playing like early in the season Torquay showed that
after beating us by 41 points well need to improve our
skill level come finals time. Round 16 saw us give 3rd
placed Ammos a 65 point thumping. In what was a
complete reversal of form from the previous week, Micks
boys showed that with players returning to the side that
theyll give a good account of themselves come
September. Round 17 saw them continue the good form
playing Drysdale at home it was another big 74 point win
over the 5th placed side. Last round of the home and
away season saw us travel out to Modda. Another big win
over Modda thanks to a 10 goal haul from Scotty Michell
has them primed for a finals tilt. Mick and his coaching
staff have every reason to be confident for the coming
weeks.
The Seniors last month of footy was a mixed bag.

The game against

Port was even for
the first half due to
wayward kicking for
goal. A 6 goal 3rd
quarter gave us a
lead of 45 points,
which was
dwindled away
from a fast finishing
Port to 25 points at
the final siren. A better performance was going to be
needed if we were to match it with top side Torquay.
Unfortunately Torquay showed us a clean pair of heels;
the 68 point loss was a fair indication of the gap between
the two sides. Could we regroup and give a good account
of ourselves against 2nd placed Ammos. In what was a
great game of footy from both sides we held a 9 point
advantage at time. Ammos got away from us early in
the last then we made a charge but couldnt bridge the
gap going down by 14 points. In what was a polished 4
quarter effort we thumped Drysdale by 97 points. We had
15.2 on the board at time, which left Drysdale shell
shocked. It was one of their best team performances for
the year even the opposition coach was full of praise at
the way we went about it. With 3rd spot on the ladder
locked away what could we expect from the Modda game.
Modda showed us that you can not underestimate your
opposition. Full credit to them their season was over win,
loose or draw but they played as if their finals campaign
was on the line. Our boys looked second rate obviously
the skill level doesnt disappear in a week but when youre
mentally not switched on you pay the consequences.
Our finals campaign started on the 29th August both
Seniors and Reserves will be playing Ammos at Port.
Lets hope the BHFNC can be a good ambassador for the
township of Barwon Heads.
GO HEADERS.

NETBALL

It is extremely exciting for Barwon Heads this season as

all of our junior Saturday teams will be playing in the finals.
That is an amazing achievement for our players and
coaches and everyone who assists and supports. We
also pleased to report that our seniors have also had a
successful home and away season and both B Grade and
D Grade will be taking the court in finals. This is a brilliant
way to end the season and know that everyone will be
there to support the girls over the finals period, as they
have been throughout the rest of the season.
Congratulations to all of our U11 teams for a great
season. While the Saturday U11 teams don't compete in
finals, we are very proud of our girls, led by coach Kim
Walker, who finished their year undefeated.
It is almost impossible to match the huge smiles and
enthusiasm of our club's smallest members. Some of
them started the season having never played before and
to watch them at their recent U11 Carnival at Kardinia
Park, you wouldn't know it. This round robin tournament
gave our girls the opportunity to play teams from around
the region and for those of us who have been watching
from the sidelines each week, it was wonderful to see the
improvement in their skills and teamwork. It was a day
that included some wins, some losses and a whole lot of
fun.
We are equally proud of those teams that didn't make it to
finals and while it might be disappointing to have finished
outside the top four, there have been so many
improvements across all grades and all teams throughout
the season.
The signs at the end of the season are all positive and we
look forward to continuing to grow and develop as a club
into 2016 and beyond.
There have been a great number of contributors to the
club this year.
Every contribution is a valued one and the players,
coaches, parents, committee and supporters have made
the club a great place to be around this season.

Barwon Heads Cricket Club

To paraphrase Anthony Newley,
Birds flying high you know how we feel, Sun in the
sky you know how we feel, Breeze driftin' on by you
know how we feel. It's a new dawn, it's a new day,
it's a new year for us, and we're feeling good.
The approaching start of any season is a busy time. A
new committee has to organize itself for a new season
and no matter how many incumbents there are from
previous seasons, there is still a lot of work to do before
the real work of the running of the club begins.
Training has already commenced and junior
registration is almost upon us. Keep your eyes peeled
for information on the website, Facebook and Team App
for dates re junior cricket.
In the impending season the club will be led once again
by president Russell Nipper Hyland. Russells
committee comprises a good mix of young and of more
experienced people who will work together to advance
the cause of the club. Skippers have been sought for all
senior grades and Craig Biddiscombe will be coach
again in 2015-16.
A number of new members have joined the committee
for the following season and some have left. I will outline

the new members in next months edition, but I wanted to

note in particular the departure from the committee of our
Junior Coordinator for the past few seasons Todd
Friswell. Todd has served in an outstanding manner in his
capacity as both Junior Vice President and especially as
Junior Coordinator. His attention to detail, support for the
coaches and care for the development of the junior
players has gone beyond just the members of our club
and hes been quite active within junior cricket in the
region. Todd has also coached throughout this period
and been instrumental in the development of the skills of
young players in the club. People prepared to give the
selfless dedication to the club and to work so hard for the
betterment of all of the juniors have previously proven to
be difficult to find, we have been extremely fortunate to
have had Todd in this roll and hell also be difficult to
replace. Thanks for your service Frizz.

Sorry to end on a sad note, but there is no

possible way to understand the level of
the tragedy that recently occurred in the
family of our former president and
premiership player Trevor Hill. Trevors

son Lloyd tragically lost his life in an

accident and the club has been deeply
shocked by his passing. Im not sure I
remember Lloyd playing, at least not as a senior player,
but he was well known to many members of the club
and was of course also the brother to George Hill who
has played many games for the club. The members and
committee send our heartfelt condolences to Trevor,
Sharon, Grace George and all of the family at this
difficult time.
The season isnt far away now. When you next read an
edition of Talking Heads we will have commenced
playing despite a late start due to an October AFL Grand
Final.
You can however expect to see the flannelled fools of
the village, the men and boys of the true Royal BHCC
out on the park preparing for the season to come. Say
GDay if you see us as were not in a hurry like the
pseudo BHCC on the velocipedes and dandy horses.
Wed love a chat.
More next month.

On Saturday the 29th August the Junior Section 13 team

of Mia Gleeson, Alex Corinaldi, Romy Nicholas, Fin
Hutton and Isaac Ingham will be playing in the grand
final against St. Albans. After finishing fourth they played
the top team Geelong Lawn in the prelim, under very
windy conditions. The team all excelled, and were able
to lift for the occasion. The opposition team were very
complementary on how much they'd improved a good
endorsement for practice and Cam's coaching.
Congratulations on this great achievement in the winter
competition and goodluck for the Grand Final against
Lethbridge!
The remaining teams Boys Section 1, 10 and 15 just
missed out on finals. To the parents that umpired finals
games- thank you, your efforts are much appreciated.
Summer tennis starts October 10 and we are likely to be
entering another increase in the number of teams
playing for Barwon Heads compared to last summer
season.

COMMUNITY SPIRIT
AT ITS BEST

On behalf of Harley Julie and Kevin we wanted to

say a BIG thank you to the whole Barwon Heads
Community.

Optomist: Someone who figures

that taking a step backward after
taking a step forward is not a disaster;
its a cha cha.
Robert Brault

The genuine concern and generosity of everyone has been

overwhelming , the support has been of great assistance to Harley and
has made an extremely tough time a lot easier to cope with.
Due to the correct procedures being followed at the game and
thereafter Harley is expected to make a near full recovery over time.
Harley intends to be back at the club next year and hopes to be able to
assist with Fitness/Coaching.
Again Harley would like to thank the whole community and wanted me
to particularly thank the following people and organisations.
Beki ( Harley's girlfriend ) Cody and Megan ( close friends ) who
travelled to the Hospital with Harley and were there for him all
through the the tough first few days and are still there for him on an
ongoing basis.
Tthe BHFC in particular WOW , LAURIE , and T A who put together
a fantastic Fund Raiser within a few days.
The players who all chipped in for a new play station and games to
keep him entertained through those boring times stuck laying in
bed recovering .
Sam Schaller's Under 16 s who donated some of their hard earned
money . PS I will try to send
Bellarine Property, Christian and his staff were extremely
generous with their donation .
Barwon Heads IGA who were also extremely generous.
And everyone else who has been so sincere and generous with
their time, auction gifts, donations and kind words.

Harley , Kevin and Julie.
