2. GLOBAL TRADE - KEY FINDINGS

Despite some disappointing export numbers in 2014, the Netherlands continued
to lead the way in the global trade of onion and green shallot. In 2014, the
Netherlands exported 1.6 million tonnes of onion and green shallot totaling 622
million USD, 8% under the previous year. Its primary trading partner was the
United Kingdom, where it supplied 17.3% of its total onion and green shallot
exports in value terms, accounting for 44.9% of the United Kingdoms total
imports.
From 2007 to 2014, the Netherlands was a net exporter of onion and green
shallot. Over this period exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms.
In physical terms this difference was even more pronounced.
China and India were among the other main global suppliers of onion and green
shallot in 2014. China was also among the fastest growing exporters from 2007
to 2014 (+15.3% per year), and, by virtue of this sustained growth,
significantly strengthened its position in the global export structure.
The Netherlands top 5 trading partners were the aforementioned United
Kingdom, as wll as Germany, Belgium, the Russian Federation and Senegal,
with a combined 52.9% share of the Netherlands onion and green shallot
exports. The share of Poland increased slightly (+1.1 percentage points), while
the share of Germany illustrated negative dynamics (-4.4 percentage points).
