Parent/ teacher conferences October 6th & 7th - no classes for
students. These days have been set aside especially to cater for
conferences, as meeting during the normal busy school week is not

preparation goes into planning between teachers and admin to
ensure that siblings are scheduled around the same time and support
teachers such as EAL can be in attendance too.

News From Ms. Tindalls Class

We have been working a lot on friendships and the Melawati Way. First grade can be
a difficult time for students as there is a huge growth in social skills during the year.
This means testing boundaries of friendships and coming up with all sorts of rules for
being (or not being a friend.) Please encourage growth in this area by talking through
situations with your child and sharing stories of how you have felt in similar situations
and what you did to work things out. At school we advocate the number one thing to
do is to talk about the problem directly with the person who is bothering you and, on
the other side, being a good listener and trying to work out a solution together so that
both sides reach a greater understanding and work towards a positive solution.
In partnership,
Ms. Tindall

Monday
Reading: Zoom in on Comprehension this week. How do you know youve understood the
authors message? Can you retell the story in your own words? Can you identify the
problem and solution? Can you state a number of facts from the text? Can you
summarize what the book was about? Can you explain the main idea? How do you know
if you are comprehending? What do you do if you dont understand?

Math: Find some things of a large quantity around your home that you can count? (EG
Legos, blocks, books, cutlery). Make a plan of how you will count them? How will you
organize them? How will you keep track of what you have and havent counted? Is
there a way you can group them to make counting more efficient?
