COMMENT
t would be easy to think of the construction equipment industry as
a conservative business. After all, machines today dont look radically
different to many of their ancestors from decades ago. But a flick
through the pages of this months magazine would tell you something
different.
Look at the wheeled loader sector for example. Of course you can still
buy simple machines with basic controls, and these sell well in many
parts of the world where price is a big issue and it is difficult to justify
lots of optional extras and expensive technology.
However, look at the new machines that are coming onto the market
in Europe, Japan and North America. These feature some radical and
innovative new designs that can make huge savings in fuel consumption.
For larger machines there is the Caterpillar XE system which places
a hydrostatic drive alongside a traditional mechanical drive for huge
fuel savings as well as smoother control. Further down the weight
categories, both Liebherr and Hitachi are now offering machines with
fully hydrostatic transmissions, which can cut fuel consumption by the
order of -20% or better.
And it does not end there. In this months equipment section you can
read about Komatsus intelligent machine control excavators, which
are now commercially available following a launch at last years Bauma
exhibition. These use tried and trusted GPS machine control systems
along with a new generation of software and components such as strokesensing cylinders, to produce arguably the most accurate and efficient
excavator ever.
And it is not just the major international players that are pushing the
boundaries. Back in the wheeled loader sector, many of Chinas leading
players are now offering machines powered by liquefied natural gas
(LNG). This not only makes for a huge reduction in running costs,
but the fuel also comes without a lot of the emission and pollution
headaches associated with diesel. Some of the same arguments have
prompted manufacturers to offer propane-fuelled generators, as you can
read in this months portable power feature.

The question with all these new technologies,
parting from design norms or
hybrids, is where is the payback? Departing

This is something I think the industry

LAOS The Asian Development Bank
(ADB) has approved funding of US$
217 million for a 290 MW hydropower
project in Laos which will be built under
a public-private partnership (PPP)
arrangement. The bulk of the electricity
generated by Nam Ngiep 1 will be
delivered to neighbouring Thailand.
CHINA The 2015 BICES exhibition
will be held from 22 25 September
at the New Beijing International
Exhibition Center (NBIEC), which is on
the northern outskirts of the Chinese
capital, near its main airport. It will
be the 13th edition of the show. The
NBIEC offers eight indoor halls with a
total area of 106,000 m2. There are
also two outdoor exhibition areas with
50,000 m2 each for a grand total of
206,000 m2.

SOUTH AFRICA The Bauma

ConExpo Africa exhibition will move
to a three year cycle after the next
event, from September 15 18,
2015. The inaugural event was held in
September 2013, but the organisers
said the decision to hold the third show
in 2018 came following consultation
with local and international industry
representatives, which recommended
the three-year cycle for African
markets.
EUROPE Construction output in the
EU was -0.5% lower in June than
a year previously, according to the
European Commissions statistical
service, Eurostat. It said building
construction was down -0.2% and civil
engineering by -2.7%. The largest falls
were in Romania (-13.1%), Portugal
(-10.3%), Slovakia (-5.0%) and the
Netherlands (-3.5%), while the highest
increases were in Slovenia (+28.7%),
Hungary (+9.8%), Poland (+8.0%) and
Spain (+6.8%).
MOLDOVA The European Bank for
Reconstruction and Development
(EBRD) has facilitated financing
totalling 670 million (US$ 890
million) to improve Moldovas road
network. Some 830 km of the countrys
main road network is receiving support
in a joint partnership venture from
the EBRD, the EUs Neighbourhood
Investment Facility (NIF) and the
European Investment Bank to enable
the work, which will offer a significant
boost to its economy.

jobs surge
Construction managers, project engineers and
project directors are in demand in the Middle East,
as major new schemes come on stream in Qatar,
Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
he number of vacancies for senior construction professionals in the
Gulf region is surging according to international professional services
consultancy Procorre. The company said events such as the Qatar
World Cup and UAE Expo 2020 were driving demand for construction
project engineers, construction managers and project directors.
The company, which reported on vacancies for individuals to work on a
contractor basis (i.e. excluding permanent posts), said senior construction
positions currently account for 27% of the total number of white collar
roles marketed to UK individuals in the UAE, 82% in Qatar and 54% in
Saudi Arabia.
Lisa Mangan, relationship manager at Procorre said, There is a massive
need for contractors to oversee the construction work beginning in Qatar.
Building has started on the 12 stadiums needed for the 2022 World Cup
and individuals, such as architects and engineers are needed to implement
the planned extension to its road system, expansion of its power and power
supplies and the construction of a brand new international airport.
Meanwhile in the UAE, the company added that research by Deloitte
revealed that the value of construction projects has bounced back sharply
from its trough after the financial crisis, with US$ 12 billion of stalled
schemes now having restarted.

EGYPT

Suez expansionbudgetary
announced
allocations and
The Egyptian government has
announced plans for a new Suez
Canal waterway to increase
capacity of the link between the
Mediterranean and the Red Sea.
The scheme calls for a new 45
mile (72 km) channel to be built,
allowing two-way traffic along part
of the route.
At present the Suez Canal is only
wide enough for ships to travel in
one direction, with a number of
passing places allowing two-way
traffic. The new channel would
run alongside the existing channel,
allowing permanent two-way
operation along a section of the
canals 120 mile (193 km) total
length.
The cost of the project is put at
EG 60 billion (US$ 8.4 billion)
and is expected to be funded by
a combination of a government

new
government debt.
The government has said it will
not seek foreign investment for the
project and was also looking at ways
of setting up a listed company for
the scheme that Egyptian citizens
could invest in.
The increase in the canals
capacity is partly in reaction to the
expansion of the Panama Canal and
proposed new Atlantic to Pacific
freight routes in Nicaragua and
Guatemala.These new routes could
threaten traffic levels for the Suez
Canal for ships travelling between
Asia and the North American east
coast.
The 145 year-old Suez Canal
earns some US$ 5 billion per year
for Egypt in toll revenues. More
than 17,000 vessels use the route
each year.

Speaking in the Indian Parliament,
Mr Gowda said, It is our target
that the bulk of our future projects
will be financed through the PPP
[public private partnership] mode,
including the high-speed rail which
requires huge investment.
According to Mr Gowda,
operating Indias railway network
consumed 94% of the INR

it took as revenues last year. He
said this meant Indian Railways,
Hardly has adequate resources for

He added that Indian Railways

development and that he was
seeking cabinet approval to allow

The governments plans for

Investment Co. (HKND) have

released details of the route for
the proposed Atlantic-Pacific canal
across the country. Conceived as
a rival to the Panama Canal, the
scheme was announced in June last
year following a controversial vote
in Congress.
The canal will start at the port
of Brito on the Pacific coast, and
pass through Lake Nicaragua
before following close to the Tula
and Punta Gorda rivers to enter
the Caribbean Sea at the port of
Bluefields Bay.
The total length of the route will
be 278 km, 105 km of which will be
in Lake Nicaragua. The excavated
channel will vary between 230 m
and 520 m wide and will be 30 m
deep.
The construction budget has
not been finalised, but is put at
some US$ 40 billion. It will be
Chinese concessionaire HKNDs
responsibility to raise these funds,
and it will have the right to operate
the canal for 50 years.
Construction is due to start at the
end of this year and take five years
to complete.
There are six sub-projects
within the overall scheme the
construction of the channel itself,
two deep water ports, a free-trade
area and an airport in the city

120,000 m2 of exhibition space
according. This will make it about
the same size as the last bC India.
The show will be held for the
third time from December15 18
this year at the India Expo Centre
in Greater Noida/Delhi. It will
be its first time in Delhi, having
previously been held in Mumbai
in 2013 and 2011. The inaugural
show took up 88,000 m2, and grew
to 120,000 m2 in 2013 when it
welcomed 28,000 visitors.

Client and contractor set out co-financing plans

following Januarys US$ 1.6 billion dispute on
additional costs.
n agreement has been reached between contracting consortium Grupo
Unidos por el Canal, (GUPC) and the Panama Canal Authority
(ACP) which the two parties say will allow the completion of the
canal expansion project.
GUPC, which comprises Sacyr, Impregilo, Jan De Nul and CUSA Urban
Construction, said the variation agreement outlined a plan to co-finance
the scheme, which fell into financial difficulty at the start of this year.
The dispute between GUPC and ACP related to additional costs of some
US$ 1.6 billion on the project linked to ground conditions. The agreement
follows a memorandum of understanding to resolve the dispute, signed by
the two parties in March.
The agreement provides for the completion of the project by 31 December
2015, with a number of intermediate steps, such as the delivery of the lock
gates eight out of 16 have already been delivered to Panama by February
2015.
The agreement establishes a co-financing agreement between ACP and
GUPC for an additional US$ 100 million each, and the contribution by
GUPC of another US$ 400 million resulting from the conversion of a
performance bond from project insurer Zurich into additional financing.
At the same time, the various claims by GUPC regarding unexpected
costs incurred during the project will be settled through an international
arbitration before the Court of Miami, US, which on 21 July this year
initiated the discussion on a US$ 180 million tranche.
ACP added that construction of the third set of locks was 73% complete.

US A new 11.7 mile (18.8 km) metro line has been opened in Washington
D.C., US. Built by a consortium led by Bechtel, Phase I of the Dulles Corridor
Metrorail Project (the Silver Line), was one of the largest and most complex
urban rail projects in the US.
The US$ 1.6 billion project was awarded to a consortium comprising
Bechtel Infrastructure and Washington Group International in 2007 on a
design & build basis. This sum was incorporated into the total project price,
which at the time was put at US$ 2.4 billion US$ 2.7 billion.
Among the construction challenges on the project were constructing 6
miles (9.75 km) of elevated track, while a tunnel was also constructed under
one of the citys busiest shopping districts.

constructive,
Balfour
Beattys proposed sale of its US arm,

Cement sales
Holcim and Lafarge have proposed
selling three integrated cement
plants, two grinding stations and a
ready-mixed concrete plant in Brazil
to help win regulatory approval for
their planned merger.
The proposal has been put to
Conselho Administrativo de Defesa
Econmica (CADE) as part of premerger negotiations and will now
be subject to review and further
discussion.
In a separate development Lafarge
has agreed to sell its controlling
stake in Lafarge Pakistan Cement
to Bestway Cement for US$ 329
million. Lafarge Pakistan Cement
is quoted on the Karachi, Lahore
and Islamabad stock exchanges, and
Lafarge is selling its 75.86% stake in
the business.

Mining impact
Caterpillar had revenues of US$
14.2 billion for the second quarter
of the year, a -3% decline on the
same period last year. Although
the companys sales of construction
equipment were up +11% compared
to a year ago, it was a weak quarter
for the Resources Industries division,
which is focussed on the mining
sector. The companys net profit for
the quarter was up +4% on the same
period last year at US$ 999 million.

Tougher whatever the conditions:
The new MTU Series 1000 to 1500
Wirtgens cold recycler/soil stabilizer WR 200i is powered by an MTU Series 1100

MTU presents its Series 1000, 1100, 1300 and 1500

engines to meet the requirements of EU Stage IV and EPA
Tier 4 nal. Based on Mercedes-Benz technology, these
diesel engines cover a power range of 100 to 460kW.
They are extremely robust, reliable and fuel-ecient. For
manufacturers of non-road mobile machinery and endusers that means: Trusted quality, designed by MTU.

MTU's newly-developed
Series 1000 to 1500 engines
complement the established
Mercedes-Benz OM 924, 926,
460, 501 and 502 engines.
Like their predecessors they
nd use in performancehungry construction and
industrial applications such
as haul trucks, wheel loaders,
rotary snow ploughs, mobile
cranes, telescopic handlers,
excavators, and underground
mining vehicles. Reliable,
durable drive concepts
oering a high degree of
operational availability are
the solution of choice. The 4R
1000, 6R 1000, 6R 1100, 6R
1300 and 6R 1500 engines
satisfy these demands.
They are based on triedand-tested Mercedes-Benz
utility engines and have been

developed specically for use

out in the eld. They satisfy
EU Stage IV and EPA Tier 4
nal o-highway emission
standards by means of
exhaust gas recirculation and
a straightforward system of
selective catalytic reduction.
And this without any
additional particulate lter
and the active regeneration
this would entail. This
eliminates unnecessary
additional fuel piping and
the potentially dangerous
temperatures involved in
regeneration, and also saves
the fuel otherwise needed to
restore the lters.

Integrated System
The basic idea behind the
development of the exhaust
gas aftertreatment system
was to provide OEMs with
a sturdy, space-saving
system. From the outset,
MTU perceived engine and
exhaust aftertreatment as an
integrated system: Engine
components including the
control system harmonize
perfectly to satisfy the
specic demands of the EU
Stage IV and EPA Tier 4 nal
standards.

Evolution of the
New Series
Despite stricter emission
requirements MTU Series
1000 to 1500 engines
consume less fuel and
AdBlue than their
forerunners which meet EU
Stage III B and EPA Tier
4i. Compact design and
standard mechanical and
electrical interfaces minimize
integration costs as well.
And the new engines really
pack a punch in day-to-day
operation: Their rugged
design enables them to
deal with the sudden, hard

load changes associated

with constantly changing
operating states. They
develop plenty of low-end
torque and maintain it over
a wide speed range. The use
of lightweight materials,
such as cast aluminum
and synthetics, also lend
them an excellent powerto-weight ratio. This makes
the new Series safe and
reliable in operation without
compromising economy.

In its new type 457 wheel loaders, JCB relies on

MTU 6R 1000 engines with an output of 197kW. JCB

Several new league tables and

special reports are available from
the KHLs Information Store, www.
khl-infostore.com.
These include the latest industry
league tables from several of iCs
sister magazines.
Among the new additions are
the studies from International
Rental News (IRN) on the worlds
largest rental companies. These
include an extended version of the
IRN100 ranking, with additional
information that was not published
in the magazine, as well as a fiveyear report, containing the IRN100
listings from 2010 2014.
These provide a valuable insight
into the global rental industry,
charting the rise and fall of
individual companies as well as
analysing
trends
across the sector.
In a similar vein,
Access, Lift & Handler
(ALH)
magazine
has
produced
a
compendium of fiveyear reports covering its Telehandler

telehandler owning companies,
packaged with a five-year report on
the Aerials 20 ranking of the regions
biggest aerial platform owners.
Again, these reports provide a
unique insight into these niches,
with company information given
alongside analysis of industry
trends.

ichael Kneeland, the chairman of US-based United Rentals was

interviewed by International Rental News (IRN) editor in chief,
Murray Pollok at the International Rental Exhibition (IRE). In
interview on the www.khl.com Videozone, Mr Kneeland gives his views on
the state of the industry from his vantage point as the head of the worlds
largest construction equipment rental company,
Of the North American market, which is United Rentals sole focus, Mr
Kneeland said, Weve seen a significant pick up in rental penetration. We
see that holding and then the volume coming back as the economy heals.
[Non-residential construction] is coming back, but its coming back at a very
slow pace. Thats a healthy thing for our industry, because were not going to
have to rush out and buy a load of equipment.
Another question for Mr Kneeland was whether there were any plans to
expand United Rentals footprint outside of its home market. Its not a
question of If?, but When? We dont know. We want to find out whats
available to us, but were not in any great rush. North America is still the
biggest opportunity for us, he said.

ECONOMIC OUTLOOK
Slow recovery

Slow recovery
The construction outlook for Europe is brightening, but there is a contrast between stronger markets
in the north and the weakness still present in southern countries. Scott Hazelton reports.
he Euro zones economic recovery will
remain gradual, with tensions in Ukraine
and the Middle East adding uncertainty to
an already difficult economic environment. Real
GDP looks to be growing at only lacklustre rates
this year.
Although there has been an improvement for
Spain, there is weakness in Belgium and Italy.
Even Germany is now showing only marginal
gains, despite a strong first quarter. On the plus
side, Euro zone unemployment has dipped slightly
and employment and real wages are rising a little.
The Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) for
manufacturing suggests that output growth has
slowed and new order growth has stabilised.
IHS Global Insight expects further depreciation
of the Euro, which will improve manufacturing
competitiveness.
On the other hand, the services PMI has
climbed, reinforcing hopes that economic growth
is gaining traction. Since European economies
are typically more dependent upon services than
manufacturing, this is good news for construction
on balance. Low inflation suggests that the
European Central Bank (ECB) can sit tight and
wait for interest rate cuts and liquidity measures
to take effect, although further easing is unlikely.
On balance Euro zone real GDP is expected
to increase +1.0% in 2014, improving to +1.5%
in 2015 and +1.6% in 2016 with better than
expected prospects for Spain being offset by
weaker prospects for Italy and France.
By contrast, the UK economy is performing
well, with consumer spending and business

fixed investment driving growth. While the

manufacturing PMI confirmed a loss of
momentum, the PMI for the dominant services
sector showed buoyant growth for output,
incoming new business and employment.
Importantly for construction, the business
investment outlook is favourable, supported by
companies healthy cash positions, improved
profitability and easing credit conditions.
Businesses are currently investing to improve
productivity and develop new markets and
products. Over time, there will be an increasing
need to add capacity.
With this strength, the Bank of England is
likely to raise interest rates in the coming months.
Increases will be gradual, however, as the central
bank gauges the impact of rising rates in an
environment of high debt burdens and a strong
currency. IHS Global Insights UK GDP outlook
is for +3.1% growth this year, +2.8% in 2015
and +2.7% in 2016 nearly twice the Euro zone
performance.

Construction growth
Given this economic outlook, the view for Western
Europe construction is one of improvement, but
with anaemic growth. After years of contraction,
total construction spending will expand +1.5%
in 2014 and offer about +2.2% growth over the
following three years.
Infrastructure spending provides most of the
impetus, as the need for fiscal austerity diminishes
and countries need to catch up on deferred
projects. Turkey, Germany and the UK lead

growth in this segment, but their growth rates are

not much higher than in recent years. The real
turnaround in infrastructure growth for the region
is a return to marginal growth (or at least smaller
declines) in Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain
after the collapse seen in the crisis years.
While uninspiring in the early years of this
forecast, the non-residential structures segment
will go on to see the strongest growth with average
annual increases of +2.3%, over the next five years.
Over the same period, residential construction
will grow at only +1.8%.
Germany (+3.9%) offers the best non-residential
structures outlook in the near and medium
terms, with most of its strength coming from the
manufacturing sector, although Germany will
also lead European growth in the commercial and
institutional segments.
The UK (+3.8%) offers the second largest
growth in non-residential structures and offers the
strongest growth in Europe in the office sector. A
further indication of the turnaround in Europe is
Ireland, with the fifth highest growth (+3.0%),
behind Sweden (+3.4%) and Turkey (+3.3%).
Turkey has become one of the more disappointing
economies in Europe as political dysfunction has
increased risk and decreased interest in capital
expenditures, particularly from foreign investors.

Residential outlook
At +4.8%, the UK will be the leader as far as
residential construction growth is concerned,
followed by Turkey (+4.7%). Part of the UK
growth is a price effect, but the country is also
benefitting from housing policy decisions and
sustained economic growth that encourages
residential investment. While Turkey has become
less attractive as an investment economy, it still
offers Europes most attractive demographic
profiles and improving personal incomes.
On the other hand, residential overhang
remains in Spain, while fiscal policy and a lack of
consumer confidence is dragging on residential
construction in Greece and Portugal. All three will
continue to contract in the near term, and even
five years from now will have smaller residential
construction sectors than they do today. While
Ireland is improving in non-residential structures,
it will take time for that to filter through to
consumers, and it will also see further residential
sector contraction.
Scandinavia will enjoy moderate growth in the
+2% to +2.5% range, although Norway will be

The region has made progress with its fiscal and

northern Europe will see growth to a lesser extent.

uneven journey back to health.

Chris Sleight reports.

Light at the
end of the tunnel
irst the good news. It looks like the European construction
sector will grow this year, after six years of falling output.
It will not be a huge bounce-back by any means. The
European Construction Industry Federation (FIEC) puts the
increase at just +0.1%, which would bring construction output
in the EU to just over 1,160 billion (US$ 1,550 billion).
Other organisations are more bullish. Euroconstruct, the group
of European forecasting bodies predicts
+1.3% growth for this year. Similarly,
as Scott Hazelton of IHS Global
insight writes in this months Economic
Outlook, that companys forecast for
Western European construction growth
this year is +1.5%.
One of the problems with having so
many sources to choose from is that
it can be difficult to know where the
truth lies. However, the main point is
that the major forecasters see Europes
construction industry coming out of
recession this year.

The bad news is that no-one expects the recovery to be

very spectacular. This has always been true for the European
construction sector the boom of ten years ago only witnessed
growth rates of about +3%. At the same time, red-hot emerging
markets like China and India had construction sectors growing
at +10% or more per year, and even other developed areas like
the US grew at consistently higher rates.

REGIONAL REPORT
Light at the end of the tunnel

One of the milestones on the London,

UK Crossrail project this year was
the successful launching I June of
a 10,000 tonne, 120 m long bridge
over the Great Western Main Line,
which connects London to the west
of England and South Wales. The
bridge will be part of a new rail link
to Londons Heathrow Airport.

This looks like it will be the case once

again. The most optimistic forecasts
have European construction growth
hitting about +2.0% in two years time
or so. This will be against a global average
of +4% or better, with many major
emerging markets expected to be up in
+7% to +10% territory.
But it is always dangerous to generalise
about European growth, because the
region is made up of such a spread
of countries with different growth
characteristics and drivers.
The broad generalisation about the
region these days is that the Northern countries are performing
the best, and the situation gets worse in the South.
Most would agree that the most attractive European
construction market this year is the UK, thanks to a booming
housing market and a number of high-profile infrastructure
projects like the Crossrail East-West rail project in London.
Growth is put at +4.4% this year by Euroconstruct, with a
further improvement expected next year.
There are one or two other European countries where growth
might be stronger this year Ireland and maybe Sweden
but the UK is a much more significant market. According to
Euroconstruct, it is the third largest construction market in
Europe, at 169 billion (US$ 225 billion) in 2013, behind

The E6, one

of Norways
important road
and rail projects,
seen here two
years ago at the
start of the work.

France and the regional powerhouse of Germany with its 280

billion (US$ 370 billion) annual construction output.
Elsewhere in the North, the Nordic countries are also among
the better performers in Europe, with Denmark, Norway and
Sweden also showing good growth, although Finland has had a
few ups and downs over the last year or so.
Kjetil Tonning, FIECs vice president with responsibility for
the Nordic and Baltic countries, and vice president for business
development at major regional contractor Veidekke said, As I
remember it, Sweden was the first to recover after the financial
crisis. They recovered surprisingly fast.
There are some good projects taking place in the region.
Norway, Veidekkes home country, is among the best-positioned
thanks to its oil & gas wealth.
It is stable, said Mr Tonning, not much change. You know
what you can expect even if you change the government. For
big investments in infrastructure, we are convinced they will
continue doing what the last government did.
The financial resources are there, even though the oil fund can
only spend a limited part of its revenue on that. As long as the
government has a policy saying that they are going to connect
all the small villages, then we will have a lot to do because it is
a huge country.
Jernbaneverket, the Norwegian Rail Administration, is
working on Follobanen, which is being designed to meet the
increased demand for rail capacity in Oslo. It is expecting a 30%
population increase by 2025, partly a result of migration to the
capital for work. Jernbaneverket has highlighted potential for
increased freight traffic as well as passenger trains.
Follobanen is a 22.5 km high speed line between Oslo and
Ski stations, and Jernbaneverket said it would include Norways
longest tunnel so far. It said by 2025, it expected 11,000 more
travellers a day, an almost +70% increase in train passengers to
the Oslo Central Station at rush hour, about 5,800 fewer car
trips and about 750 fewer truck journeys a day.
Preparatory work is underway, and the main construction
work will be carried out between 2015 and 2021.
Infrastructure is also a driver in Sweden, fuelled by the
governments National Transport Plan for 2014 to 2015, which

In addition, work is underway on the Stockholm metro. A 6 km

Weakness remains
In contrast to the strength in the UK, Sweden and Norway,
all of which are outside the Euro Zone, things start to look a
little weaker within the more core European countries, and
particularly towards the South of the region.
In mid-Europe, there are signs that construction growth in
Germany is slowing, even though Europes biggest market led
the way out of recession a few years ago and had one of the
regions bolder national stimulus plans in the crisis years.
Things look even worse in France, where Euroconstruct
says a construction recession has returned, following some
encouraging signs in 2011. The organisation says it will be 2016
before the French construction sector grows again.
Frances economic stagnation provoked
a major schism in the government in
August, with prime minister Manuel
Valls firing almost his entire cabinet
for disagreeing with president Franois
Hollandes austerity policies.
The theme of austerity in Europe,
championed by German chancellor
Angela Merkel, is one that has also drawn
criticism from the construction industry.
FIEC vice president Jacques Huilllard
said, There can be no growth without
investment. The policy of austerity which
has been in favour for the last few years
has done enormous damage both to
the real economy in general and to the
construction sector in particular.

Veidekke and
FIECs Kjetil
Tonning says of
Norway, You
know what you
can expect even
if you change the
government.

It is certainly true that austerity

measures have bitten into public
construction. FIECs figures show that
infrastructure construction was down
-3.7% in Europe last year, while the
value of construction in the public nonresidential segment fell -5.5%. It was
only a more buoyant housing sector that
limited the decline in overall construction
output last year to -2.3%.
Undoubtedly the countries that have
suffered the most since the crisis years
have been the Southern peripheral
economies such as Greece, Italy, Spain
and Portugal.
Spain was once considered one of
the Big 5 construction markets along
with France, Germany, Italy and the
UK. However, six years of double digit
declines have seen construction output
fall to 65 billion (US$ 86 billion)
last year, according to Euroconstruct,
compared to a pre-crisis high of almost
220 billion (US$ 290 billion) the
countrys construction market is worth
just 30% of what it was seven years ago.
Having said that, Spain seems to have reached the bottom,
and is showing signs of recovery, and that is stimulating
business. For example, Valero Serentill, regional sales manager
for equipment auction company Ritchie Bros said, When you
open a newspaper or read the news online, you see signs of
recovery in Spain. The banks report fewer bad loans, GDP is
expected to grow slightly, the tourism industry is still expanding
and government stimulus-packages are rolled out to boost the
industry.
He said another reason for hope was the changes being made
to business models in construction companies.
He added, Before you can look to the future, you have to look
closer at the present. An important and real change is that people
are getting a grip on the reality of the market. Step by step you
see big and small construction businesses all over Spain adapting
their business model to the new needs and opportunities of the
market.
Figures from Euroconstruct forecast a return to moderate
growth for the Spanish construction market in 2015, with a
similar improvement expected for Italy and Portugal.
But forecasting is of course a dangerous business, and the
circumstances that can change constructions outlook are
sometimes unexpected and can come around more frequently
than the annual cycle of industry updates.
The European Commissions statistical service, Eurostat
provides monthly data, and since the second quarter of the year,
there has been some suggestion that European construction
growth could be reversing, or even stagnating. Worsening
relations with Russia, insurgency in the Middle East and other
global concerns are all having an impact on Europes weak
economic growth.
As construction output tends to go up and down with the
general economic cycle, there is a concern that even though
these factors are well-removed from the industry itself, they
could be enough to delay the recovery.

WHEELED LOADERS
Economy drive

Economy
drive
ore and more of the wheeled loaders being sold in
Europe, Japan and North America are now fitted
with a new generation of low emission engines. Stage
IV (Europe) and Tier 4 (US, Canada and Japan) requirements
started to come into force last year.
It takes time after the implementation date for these new engine
machines to reach the market. Manufacturers are allowed various
flexibility provisions to use up stocks of older engines as well as
sell other old Tier machines once the new laws have come in.
But as time goes on these machines work their way through the
system, and more and more Tier 4/Stage IV loaders find their
way to construction sites.
Many other parts of the world also have emissions regulations
that apply to wheeled loaders and other off-highway equipment
for construction, mining and agriculture. At present the most
stringent of these is the equivalent to the older Stage IIIA/Tier 3
laws. And of course there are many parts of the world where there
are no emissions regulations at all.
The main reason lesser regulated countries have stopped at Tier
3 levels is that above this fuel quality becomes a critical issue. The
various aftertreatment systems used to achieve Stage IIIB/Tier
4 Interim and Stage IV/Tier 4 Final require ultra low sulphur
diesel about 10 or 15 parts per million(ppm) of sulphur. Any
higher than this and exhaust after treatment systems like diesel
particulate filters (DPFs) and selective catalytic reduction systems
(SCR) get clogged with soot, and the engine will overheat.

Komatsus
WA320-7 features
the companys
parallel Z-bar
front end, which
gives it good
breakout forces as
well as the ability
to parallel lift.

Different engine regulations in developed

and emerging markets mean wheeled
loaders now vary a lot from country to
country. However, the drive to increase
fuel efficiency is common around the
world. Chris Sleight reports.
Volvos Stage IV-compliant L250H is said to offer 18% better
fuel economy than its predecessor thanks to the companys
Optishift drivetrain technology.

So until ultra low sulphur diesel is widely available in emerging

markets, these countries will likely stay at Tier 3 emissions levels
at best, even though many governments have a desire to make
regulations more stringent.

Parallel development
This divergence of developed and emerging markets has had an
impact on the models manufacturers produce. Wheeled loader
makers that want to be global now have to produce at least
two ranges a Tier 4 model for developed markets and a Tier
3 model for lesser regulated countries. Some would also argue
the need for a Tier 0 machine, as in many countries a Tier 3
model would be over-sophisticated (uncompetitively priced) and

WHEELED LOADERS
Economy drive

Following a successful trial Southwick, UK-based aggregates

and cement company Dudman Group has bough seven
Liugong wheeled loaders. The largest is the 888III, which
weighs in at 30 tonnes and features a 250 kW Cummins
QSM11 engine.

A hydrostatic transmission has helped reduce

fuel consumption on Hitachis ZW140-5 by -20%
compared to the predecessor model.

New workhorse
Doosan loader chosen for arduous work
lix, Spain-based Trans-Crispi has bought a new Doosan DL350-3 wheeled loader for
arduous day-to-day work. The family business is active in concrete supply, excavation,
container rental, waste management & transportation and public works. However, one
of its main activities at the moment is the extraction, transportation and disposal of waste
sludge from a chemical plant near its headquarters.
Company director Antonio Ortega said, We previously had another brand of wheeled
loader, but we needed one with a higher bucket capacity for the sludge removal task, to fully
optimise our work. We also needed a tougher machine because this work is quite harsh, with
12 hour days on average. The new Doosan DL350-3 is an excellent model in terms of bucket
capacity, static tipping load capacity and standard equipment, which is very complete and
technologically advanced.
It will be working at the landfill and the concrete plant, loading materials into containers
and trucks or transporting them at our facilities. It will also be used to perform tasks for our
clients, such as the sludge removal job.
We are very pleased with the machines performance so far. Its power, load capacity and
speed are well balanced. We are also happy with its safety levels, as this model includes all
the necessary equipment required under European regulations.
The machine is equipped with a Stage IIIB-compliant Scania engine delivering 202 kW. The
transmission and axle are from ZF.

JCB previewed its first Stage IV loaders at Hillhead. It says

the use of an MTU engine on the range-topping 457 has
contributed to a 16% overall fuel economy saving.

perhaps unreliable as well due to fuel quality issues and the tight
tolerances inherrent in Tier 3 engines.
What is interesting is that manufacturers are taking the
opportunity to design loaders with features specifically designed
for emerging markets, rather than just taking a previous years
European or US model with a lower Tier engine.
One example of this comes from the fact that many emerging
markets are in tropical or equatorial regions, so there is often
a need for more serious engine cooling, air filtering and air
conditioning.
Meanwhile in developed markets, all the technology that has
been added to engines to reduce emissions has of course pushed
up purchase prices. In order to help make this more palatable to
their customers, loader manufacturers have been looking at ways
of improving fuel efficiency and cut other running costs on new
models.
For example, Volvos new L250H wheeled loader, a Tier 4
Final machine, is claimed to offer 18% better fuel economy
than predecessor models thanks to the companys Optishift
transmission system.
This covers several technologies, one of which is called Reverse
By Braking (RBB). In short cycles, operators tend to switch
rapidly between forward and reverse movements, and this means
the loader tends to be slowed down by the torque converter,
rather than the brakes. This is less efficient than using the
brakes and also strains the transmission. RBB gets round this
by automatically applying the service brake, even though the
operator might be using the machine in the same way with the
forward/reverse lever.
In a similar class to the 35 tonne operating weight L250H
are Caterpillars new 980M and 982M wheeled loaders, which
weigh in at 34 and 36 tonnes respectively. Again, fuel efficiency
improvements on these Tier 4 Final machines are a key feature,

WHEELED LOADERS

Cases first Tier 4 Final loaders are the

of features and options to cut fuel
consumption.
John Deere has made improvements to axles on its utility

engines.

and Caterpillar says that by integrating the various components

more deeply and improving efficiency in the hydraulics it has
eked out a 10% fuel consumption saving compared to the
equivalent K-series models.
Further down the weight categories, Cats 26 tonne 966M and
972M Tier 4 Final loaders are available with its XE advanced
powertrain, which offers even bigger fuel savings. The standard
M-series versions are said to consume -10% less fuel than their
predecessors, but the XE technology is said to deliver -25%
lower fuel consumption on average compared to machines with
traditional torque converters. Caterpillar says this means they
offer the best fuel efficiency in their class.
The XE system works by having a hydrostatic and mechanical
transmission in parallel, with the two outputs combined using
a planetary gearbox. The hydrostatic system tends to be used a
low speeds, where mechanical systems are inefficient, but as the
machine gets moving the mechanical system takes over more is it
reaches its sweet spot.
This is all invisible to the operator, who just drives. In fact, the
operating experience should be better, as this type of continuously
variable transmission (CVT) smoothes out gear changes.
Komatsus new additions to its range meanwhile have been
further down the weight categories, where the requirements
can be different. Unlike heavier loaders for pure production
applications, models like the new 11.8 tonne WA200-7 from
Komatsu America and 15.3 tonne WA320-7 in Europe can find
themselves in a variety of applications.
So as opposed to the Z-bar linkage found on heavier machines,
these smaller loaders feature Komatsus parallel Z-bar, which still
provides high breakout forces, but which can also parallel lift for
fork and pallet jobs.
Both machines are fitted with Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB engines.
On the WA320-7, this makes for -10% less fuel consumption
and +12% more torque than on the predecessor model, the
WA320-6.
Some of the fuel savings are due to Komatsus Smart Loader
Logic system, which automatically matches the engine torque
and revs to the loads being placed on the machines systems. This
means fuel is not wasted but performance is not sacrificed.
At 11 to 12.4 tonnes operating weight, Hitachis new ZW1405 and ZW150-5 loaders are in a similar bracket. These machines
claim a huge -20% reduction in fuel consumption over previous
models thanks to the use of a hydrostatic transmission (HST),
and a display in the cab also helps by telling the operator when
the machine is being used at its most economical.
Auto engine shutdown is available as an option, and this
prevents unnecessary fuel use by stopping the engine after the
machine has stood in neutral with the parking brake on for a
minute.
Likewise, Liebherrs latest mid-sized wheeled loaders feature a
hydrostatic drive, which the company says contributes to a -25%

Purpose-built units from Liugong-Cummins JV
ollowing on from the signing of a joint venture agreement between Cummins and
Liugong in October 2011, production at Guangxi Cummins Industrial Power Company
(GCIC) is now well underway.
One of the two models it produces is the 9.3 litre L9.3 for 5 tonne capacity (about 3 m3
bucket capacity) wheeled loaders. Although this 162 kW engine is fairly simple, with its
mechanical fuel pump and Tier 2 emissions compliance, it is a unique engine designed
specifically for this application you will not find a 9.3 litre engine elsewhere in the Cummins
range.
The factory passed its milestone of producing its 10,000th engine in June this year, and the
immediate target is to be running at 50,000 engines per year for the Chinese excavator and
wheeled loader sector. These engines are for use by Liugong, but also for sale to other OEMs
through Cummins national sales network.

reduction in fuel consumption. The L 542, L 556 and L 580

cover the 8.7 to 13.2 tonne weight categories and feature Tier 4
Interim/Stage IIIB engines.
Another interesting feature is with the use of a hydraulic, rather
than mechanical driveline, there is more design flexibility. This
has allowed Liebherr to mount the engine transversely across the
machine, which it says makes for a more compact layout and
easier day-today maintenance
The loaders are available with either a Z-bar linkage or parallel
lift arms, and Liebherr says it is the only manufacturer to offer
either configuration at no extra cost.
Lower fuel costs for the owner are also a big theme for JCB, as
illustrated by the range-topping 457 wheeled loader the company
previewed at Junes Hillhead quarrying exhibition in the UK.
JCB will use MTU engines in the Stage
IV/Tier 4 Final version of the loader, and
the company says one of the reasons for
going with this supplier is that MTU has
achieved this emissions compliance for
the 19 tonne machine without the use
of a DPF in the exhaust aftertreatment
system. The 193 kW engine is said to
contribute to a 16% overall fuel saving on
the 457, compared to the previous model.
The new loader will also feature JCBs
next generation Command Plus cab,
which improves comfort and the general
working environment for the operator.
John Deere meanwhile used Marchs
ConExpo exhibition in Las Vegas,
US to unveil three models from its

K-series wheeled loader range which now meet Tier 4 Final

emissions standards. Powered by its own PowerTech engines,
the 624K, 644K and 724K also come with other upgrades and
improvements.
For example, improvements to the axles include oil cooling
and filtration, along with brake retractors and adjustors on the
Teammate V axles. This keeps axle oil and its components cooler
in hard braking and heavy duty load-and carry applications.
The company added that the five-speed lockup torque converter
transmission helped cut fuel consumption by -5% to -8%. This
feature connects the entire drivetrain directly to the engine to
provide full engine power during transport, ramp climbing and
downhill conditions, eliminating wasted energy.
The ConExpo show also saw Case unveil its new Tier 4 Final-

which use only SCR to achieve emissions

Case says the 158 kW and 180 kW
machines deliver as much as a 10%
improvement in fuel economy over the
previous E Series models. The company
added that savings of up to 30% with the
automatic engine shutdown feature. A
further optional efficiency package includes
a five-speed lockup transmission, axles with
auto-locking differential and advanced

More options
As demanding and expensive as the string of engine regulations
have been for manufacturers, they have not discouraged new
entrants into the European and North American wheeled
loader markets. Many of Chinas leading wheeled loader
manufacturers have these territories in their sights as part of their
internationalisation strategies, and that ultimately means more
choice for equipment buyers.
For example, SDLG, which is majority-owned by Volvo has
launched new wheeled loaders in North America this year. The
LG948L lies in what the company describes as the most coveted
capacity class for the region, with a 3.0 yd (2.29 m3) bucket
capacity.
SDLG says its machines are aimed at customers that dont need
the features of premium-priced machines, or those that might
have purchased a used loader.
The LG948L is powered by a 173 hp (129 kW) Deutz engine,
and features a ZF transmission. It comes with a hydraulic quick
coupler and 12 month/1,500 hour warranty as standard.

year about seven to eight times the size of

the North America loader sector, for example,
even though the Chinese equipment market
as a whole is only about twice the size of
North Americas.
So with the Bauma China exhibition
coming up this November in Shanghai, China, there should be
plenty of new wheeled loaders to see. These might not just be
limited to models for China and other emerging markets, but
could also include machines for highly regulated territories like
Europe and North America.

More to come

HIGH RISE
Topping out

Topping out
As the worlds 100th super-tall building tops out,
suppliers to the high-rise construction sector are raising
their game to ensure their technology keeps up with
ambition. Sarah McCay reports
his year saw the 100th super tall building of more than
300 m built when the Jiangxi Nanchang Greenland
Central Plaza, towers 1 and 2, topped out in June, in
China. The 303 m Jiangxi project is now the tallest building
complex in Nanchang, stepping above the International Finance
Centre (239 m) and the still-under-construction Jiangxi
Nanchang Greenland Zifeng Tower (268 m).
More than half of the worlds tallest buildings have been built
in the last four years, with the total super tall category almost
tripling in the last seven years.
The worlds current tallest building the Burj Khalifa in
Dubai, UAE towers 828 m above the desert. However, it will
lose its crown when the 1 km high Kingdom Tower in Jeddah,
Saudi Arabia is completed. Meanwhile, there are plans in China
for the 1 km Phoenix Towers, in Wuhan. If this project goes
ahead, it will undoubtedly be designed to eclipse the Kingdom
Tower.
For those working in the construction sector, being involved in
a high-rise project can often mark the pinnacle of a career. From
architects with a sky-high vision, to contractors and equipment
manufacturers offering cranes, access equipment, formwork or
concrete pumps, high-rise often comes with high prestige and
high payout, alongside high build costs and high risk.
As architects get more ambitious, manufacturers need to create
equipment that is up for the job, no matter how high.
US manufacturer Reed offers a specially developed highrise concrete pump. A 164 kW Cummins Diesel and 180cc

main hydraulic pump powers the new C90S concrete pump.

According to Reed, the pump offers a maximum output of
69 m3 per hour, which allows for high-output vertical pumping.
Freddy Almeida of Almeida Concrete Pumping and Equipment
is a dealer, distributor and supplier of the C90S.
At moment we have four including ours, which are working
on buildings from 20 to 40 floors. Each one of these pumps is
used 2-3 times per week and is performing very well. One of
our customers just finished a 40+ storey building in Brooklyn,
while two in Manhattan of 30+ floors and are currently being
worked on, Mr. Almeida explained.
This is one of the more affordable and faster ways to get a
job done with the least amount of manpower. We are seeing
more buildings raised up with companies using this type of
equipment, including the tallest buildings being built in New
York, he added.
From pumps to formwork, both have been the long-considered
construction method of choice for high-rise developments.
Carillion Alawi is working with RMD Kwikform on the
construction of the US$ 64 million landmark Sultan Qaboos
Mosque in Nizwa, Oman. The site has required shoring towers
of up to 43 m high, to support the casting of the mosques
dome, as well as concrete slabs and beams.

Innovative solution
Faced with a change in programme sequencing, which required
both beams and slabs to be cast at the same time, engineers
from RMD Kwikform designed an innovative solution to
erect a run of Rapidshor shoring support inside the previously
erected Alshor Plus birdcage, specified for the initial works.
By combining both Carillion Alawi was able to speed up the
construction cycle for the project.
The dome was the ultimate challenge, admitted RMD
Kwikform regional sales manager, Bellphine Campbell.

Formwork manufacturer Doka is currently working on one of
the tallest buildings in Italy the 202 m high Torre Isozaki in
Milan.
Located within the new sustainable CityLife-Project, the
tower will have 53 storeys, including basement levels, and cover
an overall area of 53,000 m2. Doka Italia supplied automatic
climbing formwork and protection screens for this project.
Torre Isozaki is the first high-rise building in Italy where core
floors and walls are realised in the same step rather than the core
being built beforehand, said Massimiliano Guelfi, engineering
manager of Doka Italia.
The formwork was raised hydraulically using Dokas SKE100
automatic climbing formwork. This lifting technology also raises
the concrete placing boom built into the automatic climbing
formwork.
Another automatic hydraulic climbing system, Mevas MAC,
is being used on the construction
of Ardmore Park in Singapore, a
condominium tower being built for
developer SC Global by Dragages
Singapore, a subsidiary of Bouygues.

Compact in tight spaces, the Wolff 166 B is ideally suited for

the tight build conditions Riedel Bau is working to in Munich.

The jib of the Wolff 166 B can be raised

almost vertically. So there is no danger
of a collision with neighbouring cranes
both during the hours of operation and
when it is out of service.

Schindler lifts
Elevator technology is a limiting factor
oncepts for the first mile-high building already exist. However, development is
not expected for another 20 years, simply because elevator technology needs to
catch up.
Current elevator technology is limited to buildings of around 600 m high, mainly due to
challenges with braking and cabling. However, manufacturers are working on solutions.
Swiss lift manufacturer Schindler is experienced in working on high-rise developments.
It is currently installing 34 elevators, including 30 Schindler 7000 high-rise elevators,
in Marina One Residences, rising in Singapores new Central Business District. The two
34-storey towers will consist of 1,042 apartments.
All units will adopt Schindlers clean Power Factor One (PF1) regenerative drive
technology. The PF1 regenerative drive enables power generated by the elevator to be fed
back into the buildings electricity grid, using up to 30% less energy.

The new Roche Tower in Basel is climbing to 178 m with

MEVAs MAC automatic climbing system, MevaDec slab
system MevaDec and Mammut 350 wall formwork.
(Photo: Wladyslaw Sojka).

The MAC system does not use anchors on the external face of
the core walls but pockets on the internal face, leaving a smooth
finish. This is vital for the project, as the architects stipulated an
architectural concrete finish for the core walls because they are
exposed on some floors.
The MAC system is also being used on the new Roche Tower
in Basel, Switzerland. When completed, the tower will be 178m
high. The 41-storey tower has already passed the 130m mark
and is progressing at a storey a week.
In Poland, formwork and scaffolding manufacturer Peri
is working on the 220 m high Warsaw Spire office complex.
A 55 m high building flanks the tower on each side. Peri has
supplied the complete formwork and scaffolding solution for
the complex including the selfclimbing formwork for the core
as well as a fullperimeter climbing protection panel.
Climbing at a floor a week, the building has thrown up some
challenges for Peri, not least because of its variable elliptically

HIGH RISE
Topping out
Main contractor Teknik Yap
Construction is using 11 Liebherr tower
cranes to build the high-rise elements
of Evora Istanbul.

Leap forward
How high-rise technology change with the Burj Khalifa
urj Khalifa, developed by Dubai-based Emaar Properties PJSC, is the worlds
tallest building at 828 m. The project broke many records, and put a new spin on
construction techniques to open the way to even higher projects.
Some 45,000 m3 of concrete, weighing more than 110,000 tonnes, was used to
construct the concrete and steel foundation, which features 192 piles buried more
than 50 m deep. Burj Khalifas tower construction used 330,000 m3 of concrete and
39,000 tonnes of steel rebar. Construction took 22 million man-hours.
According to Emaar Properties, Burj Khalifas construction saw the introduction
of several ground-breaking technologies supported by advanced equipment and
construction methods.
For example, the tower cranes used were especially modified to cater for extreme
heights as well as the hook speeds and capacities required to meet the design aspects
of Burj Khalifa. The 3.2 tonne capacity, 100 m/minute hoists were scheduled on an
hourly basis to ensure timely delivery of workers and materials, as well as the removal
of debris.
The design of the concrete mixes used also involved extensive trials and testing to
ensure the mix remained pumpable during its long journey up the tower, and then
achieved the high early strength required
for the three-day jump from cycle. The
concrete was pumped by the largest
concrete pumps in the world, which could
generate 350 bar of pressure and pump
the concrete through especially large and
thick steel pipes.
As the height of the tower exceeds
the limits of conventional surveying
techniques, a special GPS monitoring
system was developed to ensure
millimetre accuracy during construction.
The towers build achieved a number
of world records, including the highest
installation of an aluminium and glass
faade, at a height of 512 m. The total
weight of aluminium used on Burj Khalifa
is equivalent to that of five A380 aircraft
and the total length of stainless steel bull
nose fins is 293 times the height of the
Eiffel Tower in Paris.

shaped storey slabs. Peri is using its flexible

rail climbing system (RCS). Horizontally
cantilevered RCS climbing rails have
been used which make accommodating
the varying length of cantilevers possible.
For the formwork for the core walls,
Peri engineers combined the ACS selfclimbing formwork with a platform and
gallows.
The climbing formwork as well as the
climbing protection panel move from
floor to floor without the need of a crane.
Instead, the ACS selfclimbing formwork
uses a climbing device with 100 kN
lifting power while the RCS climbing
protection panel is lifted upwards by
means of mobile climbing devices.

Access all areas

Site access is another area of challenge for high-rise contractors,
with passenger and material hoists playing an important role in
development.
One of the longest-running high-rise builds of modern times,
the Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona, Spain, is using
several passenger and material hoists from Saltec Torgar.
The company has supplied four single cabin and one
twincabin, 1,500 kg capacity, T1 passenger and material hoists
to the construction site.
Building of the Sagrada Famlia started in 1882, with architect
Antoni Gaudi getting involved in the project in 1883. The
cathedral currently has a completion date of 2026 to mark
the 100-anniversary of Gaudis death. It will have a final spire
height of 170 m.
In Turkey, contractor Sera Yapi Construction is using four
Alimak hoists for materials and personnel lifting at Emaar
Square, one of Turkeys largest private developments. The new
development will include seven high-rise towers.
The four Alimak hoists are all Scando 450 units, designed
for materials and personnel, and can lift a maximum load
of 2 tonnes to a height of 150 m. The hoists are working in
conjunction with 14 tower cranes to supply all the lifting needs.
We have fixed all four Alimak hoists to the side of the
excavation, where the entrance is located. The prime use for the
hoists is personnel transportation, as the cranes are handling
most of the material lifting, explained Mrs Aydin, project
coordinator for Sepi Yapi.
When the foundation work is complete we shall redeploy
the hoists to the exterior of four of the medium-rise structures,
where they will be used for both personnel and materials, she
added.
Emaar Square will be completed over several phases between
2015 and 2017.
Also in Turkey, 11 Liebherr cranes are being employed to build
Istanbuls largest housing project, Evora Istanbul.
The Liebherr cranes are a combination of 8 tonne capacity
high-top 132 EC-H 8 Litronic units, 6 tonne 154 EC-H 6
Litronics, a 90 LD with a capacity of 3 tonnes, and a 42 KR.1
crawler crane with a maximum lift of 4 tonnes and maximum
hook height of 28 m.

HIGH RISE
Topping out
Peri has supplied formwork and
scaffolding for the Warsaw Spire office
tower, which, at a height of 220 m, will
be the tallest office building in Warsaw
on completion.

The development consists of 44 blocks being built on a 300acre site on the Anatolia side of Istanbul. To maximise the views
from the high-rise towers, many of the taller structures have
been designed in an oval, and feature floor-to-ceiling windows.

Tight spot
In Munichs old town, a Wolff 166B crane with hydraulic luffing
gear is helping build a new office building in a tight corner of
the city.
Construction work is ongoing in adjacent sites, which is
why the contractor Riedel Bau opted for the compact flat-top
crane. The cranes luffing jib can be raised to an almost vertical
position, meaning it takes up minimal space when not in use.
Because of its design, the Wolff can slew in the minimum of
space without projecting beyond the site, meaning that we can
work without any danger of collision, said Norbert Zhrl, site
manager for Riedel Bau.
In Russia, a Potain tower crane is at the centre of one of
Moscows tallest new buildings. The MD 265 B crane is working
on Evolution Tower, a 53-storey mixed-use development in the
Russian capitals new US$ 15 billion financial district.
Potains MD 265 B offers a maximum jib length of 65 m, at
which it can lift 2.85 tonnes.

Reeds new C90S Model High-Rise Concrete Pump is

specifically designed for mid-rise and high-rise work.

Evolution Tower features a unique spiral design where each

floor is twisted 3 in relation to the floor below, meaning the
whole building moves over a course of 135.
Meanwhile, in China six Potain tower cranes have been used
to build two 280 m tall bridge pylons. The cranes spent twoand-a-half years building the pylons at
the Chishi Grand Bridge, which will span
1,470 m and carry its road deck 180 m
above the ground. The bridge will open
at the end of this year.
The cranes on site included two MC
200s and two cranes that mix the mast of
an MC 480 with the jib of an MC 320
K16.
High rise construction has come a long
way in the past decade and, with the first
mile high building possibly only 20 years
away, industry developments look set to
continue in leaps and bounds. What will
be the final topping out height? And what
product innovations will manufacturers
magic up to keep their products top of the
game? Interesting times certainly lie ahead
as lofty ambitions turn into reality.

onstruction sites often rely on portable power options to
keep things going. From high capacity generators that
can produce multiple power to run site offices and large
equipment, to portable air compressors for hand tools and other
applications.
As technology advances, portable power products are becoming
smaller in size but bigger in power, while emission regulations
mean units are becoming cleaner too.
Our innovations will continue to focus on optimal sizing,
meaning a smaller footprint and smaller units for the same job
as well as a strong focus on fuel consumption and alternative
fuel sources. We will also look more at specifics, such as voltage

variants and cold weather requirements, explained Julio Tome,

product marketing manager for on-site generators at Atlas
Copco.

Lean & green

Atlas Copco Portable Energy introduced its latest range of Tier 4
Final portable generators for heavy-duty applications at Marchs
ConExpo exhibition in Las Vegas, US. The new QAS 25 and
QAS 50 60Hz generators use an Isuzu 4LE engine fitted with
just a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) for aftertreatment to
achieve Tier 4 Final emission levels.
The new QAS 25 and QAS 50 replace the existing QAS 25
and QAS 45 models to become the first
Tier 4 Final generators from Atlas Copco
since the emission standard took effect on
January 1, 2013. By the end of the year,
all other Atlas Copco portable generators
will be Tier 4 Final-compliant.
Both the QAS 25 and QAS 50 have a
silent enclosure design to ensure low noise
levels for use in residential or other noisesensitive locations. DeepSea controls and
a Leroy Somer AREP alternator ensure
easy operation of the generator in a range
of heavy-duty applications.

Hot stuff
Cummins Power Generation launched
three new products earlier this year, the
C170 D5, C450 D5e, and C1000 D2R

silent operation, the C170 D5 has a noise level of just with 68

dB(A) at 7 m and up to 14 hours of fuel autonomy.
A new QSZ13 electronic engine powers the C450 D5e,
providing increased power density and improved performance.
The product provides dual frequency capability and complies
with EU Series IIIA and EPA Tier 3 emissions levels.
The C1000 D2R is the newest addition to Cummins growing
range of rental products. This generator is powered by the new
dual frequency KTA38 G14 for IPP and base-load applications.
It is designed to operate in hot conditions where the temperature
may exceed 50C.

Propane propelled
US manufacturer Kohler has also introduced a new range of
fuel-efficient, environmentally friendly portable generators,
powered by propane. According to Kohler, a propane-powered
mobile generator with on-board fuel storage capacity can reduce
users fuel costs by up to -20%.
The new line-up includes four liquid-propane gensets ranging
from 30 kVA to 125 kVA, and 11 diesel gensets ranging
from 35 kVA to 680 kVA. The mobile diesel generators
are Tier 4 Final-compliant and feature the Kohler
KDI engine for its 35 to 70 kVA
models.
Propane continues to be
more widely recognised as an
efficient, low-carbon, alternative fuel for
residential and commercial applications,
commercial mowing, and fuelling engines,

According
to Kaeser
Kompressoren,
the new Mobilair
M 130 is the only
towable portable
compressor in its
size range that
can be equipped
with a generator.

The new Chicago Pneumatic CPS 2.0 portable

compressor uses a fuel-efficient Kubota engine
with a maximum speed of 3,400 rpm.

A-Plant silences roar

Power Cube delivers silent power
K fit out and refurbishment specialist Claremont Group Interiors needed a silent power
option for refurbishment work at the European and Champions League Lounges in the
Centenary Stand at Liverpool FCs Anfield stadium in the UK.
The firm opted for a silent-running Power Cube from rental company A-Plant for the majority
of its power to keep noise to a minimum.
The Power Cube was used to power the workers offices, canteen, toilets and stores. Made
up of 24 rechargeable batteries, the Power Cube takes charge from a generator, stores that
energy, then automatically turns off the generator and slowly discharges the power silently.
Neil Officer, Claremont Group Interiors site manager said, The Power Cube was brought in
because the site backs on to houses on Skerries Road and we were mindful of how disruptive
a generator could be. Since the Power Cube arrived on site its been running for over 75% of
each working day with zero noise. Plus its resulted in a huge reduction in our generator fuel
bill and it helps to reduce our carbon footprint at the same time.

said Tucker Perkins, chief business development officer at the

Propane Education & Research Council (PERC).
Now, with Kohlers new product line, construction
professionals will have the option to rent or purchase durable,
propane-fuelled portable generators that offer reliable
performance while producing fewer emissions,
he added.

Driving power
The new range of SGX commercial
generators from Subaru Industrial
Power Products has been designed for
numerous users, from homeowners
to contractors. Available in three
output sizes, each unit comes with
a Subaru EX overhead cam (OHC)
engine.
Delivering a maximum output of
3.5 kW, the SGX3500 uses Subarus EX21
7 hp (5.2 kW) engine. The unit offers a
fuel tank capacity of 4 gallons (15 litres) and
provides a continuous run time of 8 hours at the rated load.
The SGX5000 utilises the 9.5 hp (7.1 kW) EX30 engine and
offers a maximum output of 4.9 kW. Fuel tank capacity is 7
gallons (26.5 litres) and the units continuous run time is 9.4
hours at the rated load.
Featuring a 14 hp (10.4 kW) EX40 engine, the SGX7500E
provides a maximum output of 7.5 kW. It offers a continuous
run time of 7 hours at the rated load and a fuel tank capacity of
8 gallons (30 litres). Additionally, the SGX7500E includes an
electric starting system with recoil backup.
Doosan says the redesigned C185 delivers affordable power
under a virtually indestructible, single-piece canopy that
opens to nearly 90 for easy access.

Spanish manufacturer Himoinsa introduced its
new HHW series of generator sets to the market
earlier this year. The new HHW series includes
seven soundproofed, open generator models,
with power output ranging between 20 and 100
kVA at 50Hz and between 30 and 120 kVa at
60Hz.
The new generator models, powered by the
Himoinsa 4HD engine, feature low noise
emissions, optimal fuel economy and excellent
throughput, productivity and reliability levels,
according to the manufacturer.
Seven engine models have been developed
(from 1,500 to 1,800 rpm) with a power output
yielding between 20 and 95 kWm. Additionally,
the Himoinsa alternator has an automatic voltage
regulator (AVR) while its Busbar connection
system lets six of the series units be moved to
configure with the varying voltage/frequency
ratios required in international markets.

Big demands
For larger power demands, the new 50 Hz and 60

recently redesigned C185, used to power handheld air tools,

chippers and breakers.
Aimed at road building contractors, the compressors are
powered by a 65 hp (48 kW) turbocharged Kubota engine and
can deliver air at 100 psi (6.9 bar). The units have been designed
for different environmental conditions, including working at
high altitudes.
German manufacturer Kaeser has launched several new
additions to its range of portable compressors this year.
The new, towable compressed air powerhouses, the Mobilair M
114, M 115, M 130 and M 171, cover a pressure range from 7 to
14 bar with free air deliveries from 7.5 to 17 m.
Kaeser says its new units are suited to many applications,

charger, engine coolant heater, open frame and lifting beam.

Chicago Pneumatic has also added a new CPS 2.0 portable air
compressor to its power range.
The new, easy to use compressor is designed for use on even
the most demanding construction sites thanks to its high ground
clearance, which allows it to be towed over difficult terrain.
Chicago Pneumatic says the new compressor has a simple but
effective control panel incorporating a start switch, hours-run
counter, pressure gauge and control light, and offers hassle-free
starting. There is no load switch and there are no valves to be
adjusted before starting all thats needed is to turn the start
switch.
Other key features include a spillage-free frame that ensures
no oil, coolant or fuel can leak onto the ground and cause
contamination; modular construction that allows for easy
customisation; and a top cover with a large angle of opening to
provide easy access to all major components for maintenance.
The new Chicago Pneumatic CPS 2.0 portable compressor
uses a fuel-efficient Kubota engine with a maximum speed of
3,400 rpm. It has a nominal working pressure of 7 bar, and a
free-air delivery of 2 m3 per minute.
In Latin America, Doosan has launched its new 185 cfm (5.24

Generator range commended at European Rental Awards
rench generator manufacturer SDMO scooped a Highly Commended award for its
Rental Compact range of power generation sets in the Rental Product of the Year
category of the 2014 European Rental Awards.
Working closely with rental firms, trade associations and environmental agencies, SDMO
developed a rental-focussed range of generators, offering between 15 and 550 kVA. Power
is produced from a Leroy Somer alternator combined with a John Deere, Mitsubishi, or Volvo
engine. The sets also incorporate a high-level control panel, separated from the alternator.
The SDMO Rental Compact range complies with Stage 3 of the European Engine Emissions
Directives, as well as offering low noise levels and reduced ground pollution.

Himoinsas new HHW series offers seven soundproofed,

Allmand acquisition
Briggs & Stratton buys lighting tower maker

ngine manufacturer Briggs & Stratton has acquired producer of towable lighting
towers, industrial heaters and solar LED arrow boards Allmand Bros in a US$ 62 million
cash deal. Founded in 1938 and based in Nebraska, US, Allmand Bros generates
annual revenues of around US$ 80 million.
Briggs & Stratton said the deal allowed it to diversify into higher margin, higher growth
industries, and gave it access to new distribution channels, including the rental sector.
This acquisition helps us to further our strategic initiative of focusing on attractive higher
margin, commercial end use products, said Todd Teske, chairman, president and CEO of
US-based Briggs & Stratton.
Meanwhile, Allmand chairman Roger Allmand said the deal would provide more
opportunities for the company and its customers.
With a proven track record of operating successfully for over 100 years, we believe that
Briggs & Stratton will be able to accelerate our presence globally, he said.
Briggs & Stratton produces petrol engines for outdoor power equipment. It also produces
portable generators, pressure washers, and lawn and turf care products through its
subsidiaries Simplicity, Snapper, SnapperPro Ferris, Murray, Branco and Victa.

to 12 m/min. The unit is equipped with a 23 kVA generator

and is capable of delivering both direct and alternating current.
In addition to chassis-mounted models with a run-on brake
and height-adjustable or fixed tow-bar, Kaeser also offers
stationary versions.
Atlas Copco launched its Tier 4 Final XAS 185 portable air
compressor earlier this year. The unit is a single axle, oil-injected
rotary screw compressor that delivers 185 CFM (5.4 m3/minute)
at 100 psi (6.9 bar) operating pressure. The XAS 185 Tier 4
Final model is powered by either a 49 hp (37 kW) Kubota or
Caterpillar engine.
Fitted with a stepless, fully automatic unloader valve and speed
regulator, the XAS 185 Tier 4 Final constantly varies the engine
speed according to the air demand, reducing fuel consumption
and emissions.
Cleaner power will continue to be the driver for portable power
development pushing into 2015 as emission standards become
more stringent, and contractors and developers focus on their
carbon footprint.

Wacker Neuson

Thinking big
Cem Peksaglam
has been CEO and
Chairman of Wacker
Neuson since 2011,
and is steering the
company through
a new phase of
internationalisation.

the companys

ased in Munich, Germany,

Wacker Neuson makes
an extensive range of
machines at the lighter end of the
construction equipment spectrum,
including compact excavators,
loaders, dumpers, compactors, gen
sets and a range of hand-held tools.
As such it has often been perceived
as chiefly being a supplier to rental
companies, with a Euro-centric
outlook.
It is something chairman
and CEO Cem Peksaglam

acknowledges, while at the same

time looking at opportunities to
internationalise the company more.
Many manufacturers
are embarking on the
internationalisation journey. Our
plan is to be an American company
in the US, a Chinese company
in China, a Russian company in
Russia etc. We are literally speaking
the language of our customers in
these markets, he said.
More than 70% of our revenues
are generated in Europe, and I

still believe that we can grow very

much in this region, but I also
believe that we can grow faster in
the other geographies. One of the
keys to being internationally more
successful I think is having an inthe-region, for-the-region product
offering.
Take the Asia Pacific, for
instance having a share of 3%
to 4% only is something we need
to change if we look at all the
potential. I feel very much that
in China, there is definitely a
very visible trend towards more
professional products, more high
quality products. And this is an
opportunity for us.
Indeed, at the Bauma China 2012
exhibition in Shanghai, Wacker
Neuson launched a value line of
compact equipment the M Series.
The mid-priced light equipment
range comprises plate compactors,
rollers, pumps, generators, lighting
towers and walk-behind saws, built
mainly at Wacker Neusons existing
facility in the Philippines as well as
at its US plants.
We want Asian users to see
that Wacker Neuson can offer
good, simple rough and tough
products that can compete with
local manufacturers, but also offer
a real difference in quality, Mr
Peksaglam said
He added that the compact
equipment model was gaining
ground in emerging markets

>

around the world. If you look

at the naked numbers that we
have for China alone, compact is
definitely a growing segment, and
this is a trend globally.
With all these mega cities
growing around the world, these
densely populated areas will need
compact tools and that for
us even means up to 15 tonne
machines.
Wacker Neuson certainly has
its eye out for opportunities
when it comes to expanding
its manufacturing facilities in
emerging markets.

headquarters in Munich, Germany.

China production
In terms of a factory in China, it
is not a question of if but more of
when we want to achieve some
of our internally set volume targets
before we localise. For us definitely
we are building our dealerships and
distribution there, and if this flies
then why shouldnt we establish
production locally? Mr Peksaglam
said.
He added that the company
would be open to either joint
ventures or going it alone when
it came to setting up production
facilities in new markets.
I dont believe that there is one
way only to get to your target,
which at the end of the day is

market penetration. If we need

alliances in one market, we would
go for that, in others we would do
it organically. It is an opportunistic
strategy but it is also realistic.
One manufacturing alliance that
the company already nurtures is its
partnership with Caterpillar the
largest construction equipment
manufacturer in the world. Wacker
Neuson produces seven models
of mini excavators with operating
weights up to 3 tonnes for the
company.
We are proud that we are an
alliance partner with Caterpillar,
as it is the market leader in terms

of size, Mr Peksaglam said. The

alliance goes much further than
just supplying our product in a
different colour they bring in
their know-how and requests. We
are also reaching corners of the
world like the Asia Pacific where we
ourselves are struggling. Caterpillar
in China I think has over 18
factories, for instance. Its definitely
beneficial for them and us.
We are also totally open to
discussing extending the alliance
to the dual power mini excavator
unit after all this is an under 3
tonne machine. It might even to
help to bring this innovation faster

At Bauma China 2012 in

Shanghai Wacker Neuson

equipment the M Series.

to a success, and this would help

us both. We are already seeing
demand from our customers for a
3 tonne and 6 tonne dual-power
solution, so lets see.

Horizon
This is just one of the many
prospects on the horizon for
Wacker Neuson in the future. Mr
Peksaglam made clear the company
would continue to grow the
internationally, while maintaining
its closely-held structure a set-up
that he said was an extremely
helpful anchor for our long-term
strategy,
One challenge that he did flag
up for the company, and indeed
the whole industry, was that of
emissions legislation. After striving
to comply with the strict new offhighway diesel exhaust emission
laws in Europe and North America,
Mr Peksaglam called on regulators
to ensure that the rules were
properly enforced.
To be very frank the pain this
legislation has caused is affecting
the whole industry. It is harming
our competitiveness. If other
machines can enter the European
and American borders easily
and compete with us, then the
consequences economically will be
very harmful.
I am really positive towards
competition as long as it is fair
and we are playing to the same
rules.
I think healthy competition
helps us to become better, and
not comfortable, leaning back and
becoming arrogant, he said.

Pilosio

The 50-year old

Having struggled
t
l d tto make
k it th
throughh th
the global
l b l
financial crisis, Italian formwork maker Pilosio has
been reinvented by CEO Dario Roustayan as a
high-growth company with ambitious international
plans. Chris Sleight reports.
ilosio is perhaps not the
first name that springs to
mind when it comes to
formwork companies. Most of the
giants of the industry are based in
the Germanic countries and make
a point of having a big and visible
presence at exhibitions like Bauma.
Yet the Udine, Italy-based
company has a long history in the
industry, having been founded in
1961 by the Pilosio brothers. For
most of its history, Pilosio focussed
on its domestic market, but this
started to unravel post-2008
when the slowdown in Italian
construction activity in the wake of
the global recession threatened to
bring the company to its knees.
But in 2010 came the
appointment of Dario Roustayan,

Pilosio CEO Dario Roustayan.

who was tasked with rescuing the

company and turning it around.
When I arrived I found a
company that was very near to
bankruptcy, because it concentrated
on the Italian market and selling
to dealers, the assets I found
were a wide range of products
manufactured to a high quality.
We had products that could
compete with the big guys. So we
had to put that together with a
business model to transform the
company more into an engineering
company. We had to create a
reputation as a solution provider for
complex projects.
After six months it was clear that
we had to shift in three directions.
One was geographically, one
was to more complex projects,
and the other was to a different
type of customers, towards big
construction companies, he said.
And this approach has not only
brought the company back from
the brink, but driven impressive
growth at a time when markets
around the world have been
lacklustre. From when I came in
to today, we have grown 30% per
year every year. We have come to
a point where there is a need for
more resources to become a global
player. We have the competence,
people and organisation to be a real
competitor in some of the markets.
We have a history of 50 years
from one point of view, but from
another we are a start-up. We are
going to the market with people
who have ability and competence,
but there is a fresh energy there,
said Mr Roustayan.
And some of the successes Pilosio
has had along the way have been

remarkable. Its biggest single

order to date came last year when
it wonthe contract to supply
formwork and scaffolding for
the Holy Mecca City expansion
project, in Saudi Arabia. This
enormous scheme will see the
mosques floor area increased by
100,000 m2 to 465,000 m2 to allow
it to accommodate 1.2 million
pilgrims per year.
But as Mr Roustayan explained,
there was a lot of time spent
putting in the groundwork with
its local dealer, Arabian Roots
Scaffolding & Formwork, and
local contractors before sealing this
monumental deal.
We were frank and straightforward with our customers,
he told iC. We said we didnt
want to burn ourselves, so we
started with smaller projects like
the parking structure at Jeddah
Airport. But it was still different to
what we had done before because
the engineering was much more
complex than we were used to.
The experience we gained with
those smaller projects gave us the
confidence to do more complex
things. But the more complex
schemes brought the demand for a
completely different structure inside
our company. We were shifting
from products to projects and
project management. The heart of
our business is projects and project
management and the profitability
of the company depends on that.

Relationships
Other major formwork companies
also offer engineering and design
services, a fact Mr Roustayan
acknowledges. However, he said
the companys approach to doing
business went deeper than that.
From one point of view, this
business is about competence.
If you are sitting in front of the
project manager on a big scheme,
he will know within 30 minutes
whether you know what youre
talking about.
But after that comes the

relationship, and we can offer

something different from the
others. I believe in being customercentric. We have to understand
what their needs are. If you keep
that as the central objective, then
your approach, the way you deal
with customers and your internal
processes will be different, because
your focus is always there, said Mr
Roustayan.
This year could see a new
chapter opening in Pilosios
history following the acquisition
of a controlling stake in the
company by private equity firm
Columna Capital from loader crane
manufacturer PM Group. The deal
comes following the acquisition of
the heavily indebted PM Group by
US crane manufacturer Manitex
International and according to Mr
Roustayan this should mean more
funds are available for Pilosios
expansion plans.
The deal with Columna Capital
will mean an injection of capital,
he said. More than that they have

54 internationalconstruction september 2014

start-up

experience and will be able to help

with acquisitions, or setting up
subsidiaries or new production
plants.
We want to increase our direct
presence in growth markets. That
means technical, commercial
and logistical capabilities. We
are already in Canada and South
Africa, and we will reinforce our
presence there. Then we will look
to other countries.
Now we have the resources
to commit more and be more
effective.

Building peace
Another initiative that has made
Pilosio more visible to the outside
world is its annual Building Peace
awards, which are now in their
fourth year and will take place in
Venice in September. It is a grand
title, and the event has a scope far
beyond the norm for a company in
the construction industry.
Previous winners have included
architect Mario Cucinella for

his work on the Green school

for Gaza project, while last year
Cameron Sinclair was recognised
as the co-founder of, Architecture
for Humanity, an organisation
dedicated to the reconstruction of
Haiti.
Explaining how this initiative
came about, Mr Roustayan said,
Construction is an engine of
development in every economy
in the world, so we have a
responsibility to tackle other
problems that people have around
the world. Construction is
responsible for the type of housing
people live in for example, so you
can improve peoples lives with
better structures, and that is not
necessarily about spending more.
We wanted to look at
construction from a different point
of view. So we wanted to recognise
a person or organisation for
improving, in a significant way, the
quality of life of a population. Since
we are in the construction business,
we have always chosen a building as

a symbol of that. So the name that

came up was the Pilosio Building
Peace award.

African hope
This years ceremony looks likely to
take another step towards the grand
aim of the award as it steps outside
the construction industry.
The winner is different to
previous winners, who were
architects and construction people.
Samia Nkrumah is a woman who
will be running for the presidency
of Ghana, and she is the daughter
of the first president of free Ghana,
Kwame Nkrumah. The Nkrumah
Family Library the building we
are focussing on is a place where
they want to collect the culture and
heritage of Ghana.
Africa is a continent that gives
us a lot of hope for the future. If
there is a big growth market for the
future, for sure it will be Africa. So
we wanted to chose a person who
symbolised growth and hope for the
future in Africa. It has to be growth

with hope, otherwise you end up

with somewhere like Nigeria.
For all these reasons, we chose
Samia Nkrumah. We wanted
to go beyond the architects and
construction companies, said Mr
Roustayan.
It is of course a marketing activity
for the company, a fact Pilosio
embraces. But Mr Roustayan is
quick to dismiss any cynicism
about the events tone and lofty
ambitions.
We are not hypocrites. We are
doing this for a business reason,
but I would like to do business
with people that have values similar
to my own. I think most people
would say these are important
values. It also gives me, and other
people, a spiritual gratification.
If you were sitting in these
awards, I would ask you after the
event, What do you think about
Pilosio now? The reinforcement of
the brand is very significant. The
networking is also very important,
he said.

Komatsu Manitowoc

Intelligent excavator
Integrated guidance systems
and stroke sensing hydraulic
cylinders have been used to
improve accuracy, efficiency
and safety on a new 20 tonneclass excavator.
omatsu has launched its intelligent
machine control excavators in Europe.
The PC210LCi-10, unveiled as a
prototype at last years Bauma exhibition,
features a new machine control and guidance
system that improves accuracy, efficiency and
safety.
Komatsu says its control and guidance system
means the operator will no longer have to worry
about digging too deep or damaging a target
surface, improving efficiency, precision and safety
on site.
The system starts with a factory installed, fully
integrated machine control system that includes
stroke sensing hydraulic cylinders for the boom,
arm and bucket, developed by Komatsu for
precise, real-time bucket edge positioning. The
Inertial Measuring Unit (IMU) gives precise
machine orientation and determines machine

angle from gyro and accelerometer data, while

an on-board GNSS receiver is used to provide
the real time position of the machine. This
information is used to automatically prevent

Production record
Manitowoc has produced 5,000 tower cranes in China since 2006

anitowoc has announced that its manufacturing plant in Zhangjiagang, China has built more
than 5,000 Potain tower cranes since it opened in 2006.
The 5,001st crane was purchased by Malaysia-based construction company YTL. The MCR
225 A Potain tower crane was brought from Potains Malaysian dealer Inflextec Engineering.
Yow Chee Keong, YTL plant and machinery manager, said, Weve had a Potain tower crane in our
fleet since 1984, but we recently invested in seven new units because of the significant improvements
that Potain has made.
They are extremely high performing cranes that are easy to use and simple to erect. We can also
interchange masts and maintenance is easy. I
am certain we will buy more Potain tower cranes
in the future.
Seven of YTLs Potain MCR 225 A tower cranes
are working on the Fennel Sentul project in
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The cranes will work 16
hours a day, lifting pre-cast units and steel walls
measuring up to 40 metres in length, a company
spokesperson said.
The 5,001st Potain crane is handed over to
Malaysia-based construction company YTL.

digging beyond the target depth on any given

task.
Mal McCoy, product manager for hydraulic
excavators and intelligent machine control
products said, This latest Komatsu technology
is a revolution in how hydraulic excavators will
be used in the coming years. The ability of the
PC210LCi-10 to achieve and maintain grade
with minimum effort from the operator is
awesome.
Komatsu says its system lets the operator focus
on moving material efficiently, without worrying
about digging too deep. The touch screen control
box features a facing angle compass, a light bar
and audio guidance and displays information
such as real-time as-built status, a magnified
fine grading view or a 3D plan view.
The company says that by setting 3D design
data on the control box monitor, staking
can be reduced or eliminated, as can
surveying and final inspection. Safety
can also be greatly improved, with less
people needed on site and near the
machine.
The PC210LCi-10s operating weight
varies from 22.6 to 23.5 tonnes,
depending on options and configuration,
with a 123 kW engine. Other
specifications are identical to those for
the Komatsu PC210LC-10.

EQUIPMENT
Manitou Caterpillar

Stop & go
Manitou has introduced a hydraulic stop and
start system, Stop&Go. Available as an option
for the 14 to 18 m vertical reach MT telescopic
handlers sold in Europe, the system is adapted
for onsite applications where machines tend to
idle between handling operations.
The Stop&Go automatically cuts the engine
after 30 seconds when it is not being used
and when the hydraulic controls are not being
operated. When the operator touches the
accelerator or activates a control, the engine
starts back up.
It was jointly developed with manufacturer
Poclain Hydraulics, based in France, to respond
to user cycles of telescopic handlers.
According to Manitou a machine can be in
idling mode an average of 30% of the time.
Apart from reducing fuel consumption by up to
-5%, the system also reduces engine wear.

As an example, an MT 1840 IIIB telehandler,

based on an average use of 800 hours/year, can
save up to 180 hours/year run time. After five
years, up to one year of engine use can be saved,
said the company.

Scraper milestone
Caterpillar has marked a milestone with the
production of its 75,000th wheeled tractor
scraper. The historic machine, an open-bowl,
twin-engine 627K rolled off the production line
at Cats Decatur, Illinois, US facility.
Scrapers were one of three product families,
along with dozers and graders, upon which
Caterpillar built its business following World
War II. The company said that as the US
economy boomed and populations began
migrating from cities to suburbs, housing and
infrastructure construction exploded, spurring
demand for high-volume earthmoving tools like
the wheeled tractor scraper.
Just about any major infrastructure project
undertaken in the past 70 years, anywhere in
the world, you can bet Cat scrapers played a
role, said Sankar Kurumbail, wheeled tractor
scraper product manager at the Caterpillar

Decatur plant. When it comes to high-speed,

high-volume earthmoving, it can be hard to
find a more economical option. Theyre some of
the most durable products in our line, too. Its
not unusual to see a scraper from the 1970s still
working hard today.
The current K Series models feature automated
cycle functions, high-pressure steering, engineoverspeed protection, fuel economy mode,
payload monitoring and other innovations that
simplify operation, reduce maintenance and
boost fuel efficiency.
Scraper sales have been rebounding steadily
in North America since the last downturn, said
Caterpillar mining products vice president Tom
Bluth. And with our new K Series machines,
were in a great position to win business outside
North America as construction investment
recovers.
