PROYECTO GESTINMER

y logsticas, as como elevados costes econmicos.

Dragado mecnico:
cuchara bivalva (Fig. 9) y otra tipo pulpo (Fig. 10).

mejilln destinado a fbrica.
trabajos a mayor escala, sera conveniente emplear
material a bordo.

inorgnicos y carbono orgnico
disuelto, as como los datos
de
turbidez
registrados,
presentaron variaciones que
se pueden asociar tanto a las
labores de extraccin como
a causas naturales (mareas,
corrientes o temporales).

zona determinada:

Figura 19

Tecnosol esplico
2. Suelo artificial preparado a partir de residuos de
batea. Tecnosol compuesto por 30% de residuo
de laboreo de cultivo de mejilln, 30% de lodo de
depuradora, 30% de biomasa y 10% de residuo
agroalimentario.
3. Suelo compuesto por excedentes de laboreo de
cultivo de mejilln.
Para realizar los ensayos, se sembraron:

Colza, en cinco variedades: agrosa, carinata, kabel,

semundo y rstica

material extrado. La integracin de dicho sistema en las
operaciones de dragado presenta costes muy elevados
y dificultades logsticas que comprometen su viabilidad.
La extraccin manual con buzos presenta importantes
limitaciones (bajo rendimiento, profundidad y tiempo

nivel regional, nacional e internacional.

This project has been co-financed by the European Union

Mussel farming is an activity of great economic

relevance along the coastal areas of Spain and Ireland.
There are approximately 3,360 mussel rafts in the
Galician rias that produce around 290,000 MT per year
of this mollusc (2004 data).

PROJECT tackled this problem focusing its activities

on the assessment of the feasibility of removing these
deposits from the bottom, and the development of a
system that leads to an appropriate management of the
mussel byproducts produced on board.

The Galician Mussel is produced using rafts in the rias

that consist of the following parts:

The project also proposes managing the sediments

and waste byproducts as an alternative, in order to solve
environmental problems relating to the soil of mines. As
a result of the morphological changes due to mining,
which leaves sulphur rich materials on the surface that
are easily oxidizable in a damp environment, the surface
waters become acidified, polluting the fluvial water
bodies present in the area surrounding the mine.

Structure: framework of wooden beams from which

the ropes hang (maximum area of 500 m2).
Flotation system: polyester tubular floats or
cylindrical floats made from iron sheet metal coated
with polyester.
Anchoring system: the raft is anchored by means
of iron chains to one or two moorings called
muertos.
Farming system: maximum of 500 ropes per raft,
no longer than 12 m in length that hang from the
wooden structure. 100 additional collector ropes per
raft are allowed from March to September.
As a result of its high filtration capacity, the bunches
of mussels detached from the ropes and the waste
byproducts generated by the farming operations,
under the farms (rafts and longlines) materials made
up of faecal and pseudofaecal pellets from the mussel
metabolism and shell debris, are accumulated and
mixed with sediments of different origin (Fig. 1).
The accumulation of these deposits has been linked
to the modification of the characteristics of the seabed,
which increase in thickness and become anoxic (without
oxygen), as well as changes in the trophic chain inside
the rias and the composition of he benthic communities
(those associated with the bottom). The GESTINMER

Restoring mine soils and dumps requires the addition

of different loan materials able to mitigate the existing
environmental impacts, so that there is a need for:
liming materials on its surface to give a higher
pH to the soil and reduce the strong acidity of the
dissolution of soils and runoff waters.
reducing materials to reduce the oxygen content
and, therefore, the oxidation of sulphurs, maintaining
the pH over 3.5.
adsorbent materials to fix metals and sulphate
anions.
materials rich in nutrients containing significant
amounts that can be assimilated of chemical
elements able to be integrated into trophic chains
(C, N, P and K as well as Mg and Ca). These would
improve biological activity and would encourage the
self-sustainable, ongoing development of soils and
plant coverage.

2. THE PROJECT
The main objective of the Gestinmer Project is to
develop a system for the integral management of the
waste generated by mussel farming with the purpose
of reducing its environmental impact and recovering
the natural heterogeneity of the ecosystem. At the same
time, it approaches the study of the possibilities for
using waste through their use in restoring soils, tailings/
dumps and wetlands degraded by mines.
The project has been promoted by the Regional
Galician Department of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs,

coordinated by CETMAR and co-financed under LIFEEnvironment Programme. The Regulatory Council for the
Galician Mussel, the producers organization OPMEGA
have participated as partners. Other participants are
the University of Santiago de Compostela, the Instituto
Tecnolxico para o Control do Medio Mario de Galicia
(INTECMAR, Technological Institute for Monitoring the
Marine Environment of Galicia), the Instituto Espaol de
Oceanografa (IEO, Oceanographic Centre of Vigo) and
the Centro de Investigaciones Marias (CIMA, Marine
Research Centre).

3. RESULTS OF THE MAIN TASKS OF THE

PROJECT
3.1. Cartography and characterization of sediments
Prior to implementing a pilot action for extracting sediments, the following studies were developed in different
mussel farming areas located in the internal, mid and external zones of the Ria de Vigo (Fig. 2):

The results on the profiler indicate that there is a

sedimentary layer of fine particles on the base substrata,
potentially from 2 to 3 metres (Fig. 5), narrowing in a
heading towards the coast and with a tendency to
increase in thickness the deeper it goes.

Figure 4
The bottoms prospected are characterized by a regular
distribution of mounds of shells, which coincide with
the sitting of rafts on the surface, in this case fastened
to two moorings (Fig. 3). These accumulations have
a truncated pyramid shape, with a square base, and
an average height of around 0.5 and 1 m. On both
sides, they have orientated depressions and variable
dimensions, reaching down to a depth of 50 cm.
These depressions are the grooves formed by the
mooring chains due to the action of tides and wave
motion (Fig. 4).

It should be considered that the layer of sediments

is not only constituted by material coming from the
mussel metabolism, but is a mixture of fluvial, marine
and anthropic contributions.
Sediments accumulated
beneath the rafts present a
high content of CaCO3 and
organic matter (7%) and they
can be classified as nonpolluted sediments, following
the Recommendations on
management of dredged
material in Spanish ports as
published by the CEDEX.

Figure 5

3.2. Pilot action for sediment dredging

A. Geoacustic survey of seabeds using multibeam

sonar and sub-bottom profiler.

Regarding the sediments accumulated beneath the

rafts, a pilot action was designed in order to identify
the most appropriate technologies, equipment or
systems for extracting this material from the technical,
environmental and economic point of view. In the course
of this pilot action four different techniques were tested,

(granulometry, organic carbon content, heavy metals
and PCBs).

being accompanied by an environmental monitoring and

a follow-up of any possible effect on mussel farming
as a result of the dredging operations. This task was
carried out on a grid located in the area called Noia A,
inside the Ria of Muros.

Figure 2
Different dredging techniques were compared in terms of the following premises:
Results
From the results obtained on bottom samples, the
difference was noted between the external sector and
the mid and internal sectors of the ria, observing that
the accumulation of fine-grained material mainly occurs

in the mid and internal part of the ria. This is due to

the fact that the strong water currents present in the
external part appear to hinder the accumulation of fine
materials.

A. Avoiding the generation of turbidity so that the effects on the mussel culture can be minimized.
B. Extracting a material with the least possible content of water, making transport by road viable for
subsequent use of the same in regenerating mine land.
C. Achieving a good output rate in order to make the operation economically viable.

Manual extraction with divers:

This involved removing solid objects and other finer

materials. To do so, 1 m3 open type bags were made
available, which were filled by the divers using handheld tools. Bags were later hoisted up on board ship.

Figure 3
2

A human team of at least four divers is necessary

(as indicated by the law in force) as well as the ships
crew attending to handling the crane and discharging
the material that is extracted.

This system, both because of its simplicity and

availability in terms of technical and human means
needed, is easily accessible to the producers.
Furthermore, the raft does not need to be moved from
its original position and makes work easier.
However, there is a limitation of depth and time,
because of the fact that the operations are developed
by divers.

In the course of the tests carried out with the decanting centrifuge, provided by Westfalia Separator
Ibrica, S.A. (Fig. 7), it was verified that the application of this type of system for clarifying the waters and
dehydrating the mud deposits is technically viable since both the results obtained (dry extract of mud
deposits) and performance (treatment flow) proved satisfactory.

Figure 6

Nevertheless, its implementation on a full-scale would require installing one or several centrifuges on
board (depending on the work flow), and would have to be accompanied by a prior de-sanding and adding
polyelectrolyte. Integrating this system in dredging operations entails very high costs and considerable
logistic difficulties that compromise its viability.

Results in terms of the premises

B. Turbidity: Apparently zero on the surface.

A. Solid/Liquid proportion: The percentage of solids is fairly high (approx. 70-90%), depending on the type
of material inserted into the bag. The greater the volume of shells in the material in terms of sludge
deposits, the lesser the water content. (Fig. 6).

C. Output rate: Work flows are highly variable and range from 20 m3/hr. in the smaller pumps to 2000 m3/hr
or more in the larger dredgers. The greater the flow through these pumps, the higher the storage capacity
needed, and therefore, the greater will be the technical and human requirements.

B. Turbidity: Practically zero, since the resuspension of fine sediments is fairly limited, this is generated on
the bottom and disperses rapidly due to current action.
C. Output rate: Output rate is very low in the case of extracting fine sediment and shells (1 m3 per hour of
diving time means from 3 to 5 m3 /day), but is efficient enough for removing solid objects found under
rafts: ropes, tyres, bags of netting, etc. (1 m3 /15 min.).
Dredging with a hydraulic pump:
There is a wide variety of hydraulic pumps on the market. Some are submergible and can be handled by divers,
whereas others are installed on board ship. The Stanley pump is the type of suction pump handled by divers that
was selected to be tested.
Results in terms of the premises

When selecting the various systems, attention needs to be paid to their response to large sized solids that they
are incapable of grinding down.
Dredging with a pneumatic pump
The system used for this type of dredging involved an Italian suction pump, by the make Pneuma S.r.l., Model
100/20-UN (Fig. 8). According to the manufacturer, the main characteristic is its high solid percentage (70-90%) of
solids in terms of the volume of liquid set in motion.
Results in terms of the premises
A. Solid/Liquid proportion: In the framework of the Gestinmer Project, it was verified that the content in
solids is far less than expected, and can be compared to that of a hydraulic suction pump (<15%).
B. Turbidity: Apparently zero on the surface.

A. Solid/Liquid proportion: The volumes of fluid displaced are very high in terms of the amount of solid
mobilized (10-20%). Therefore, it is only possible to consider the technical viability of this system if a
dewatering system could be coupled on board. The overflow is not acceptable due to the high percentage
of fine-grained sediment present in this type of material that does not encourage a rapid decanting
process, whereas it would cause turbidity.

C. Output rate: In view of the high flow in the pump (up to 120 m3/hr), the filling time for every 5 m3 container
was very short (2 min.). If coupling a centrifuging system as described above, it would be necessary to
install at least two large sized decanting centrifuges working in parallel.
The conclusion is that this system is not suitable for
this type of material as it requires a more compact,
homogenous sediment to reach its values of maximum
efficiency.
This extraction technique can be discarded since it
holds no advantages over a hydraulic suction dredge,
despite the higher costs.

Figure 7

Figure 8

Mechanical dredging:
This entailed testing two types of hydraulically driven grabs and suspended from a cable: clamshell grab (Fig. 9)
and octopus grab (Fig. 10). In order to minimize the effect of turbidity, a 4 m. high silt screen was installed, in a 6 m.
sided square shape that was secured on board the ship.

Figure 9

d) improve the positioning of the bucket in order to

carry out a more homogeneous task and avoid extracting
material from the lower layers.
Environmental monitoring and assessment of any possible effect on mussel farming:

Figure 10

Results in terms of the premises

A. Solid/Liquid proportion: The percentage of solids is similar to the original composition in the substrate
since the greater part of the material does not undergo washing processes of the finer fractions nor
losses of the thicker fractions (mussel shell). The crab extracts a material with a lower water content due
to the fact that it has openings to allow the water built up in the top part to filter out.
B. Turbidity: Essential to fit a curtain. Visibility is reduced more inside the same, although on the surface,
over 12 metres from the dredging point in the direction of the current, visibility is the same as at the
outset.

Simulation of the evolution of a turbidity plume depending on the tides

C. Output rate: This depends on the volume of the bucket, although output rate per day is determined by the
storage capacity on board and the distance to the landing port. In the course of this pilot action, from 18
to 24 MT/hr. were obtained with a 600 L bucket and 5 MT/hr. with a 200 L crab.

The environmental monitoring of the pilot action for sediment dredging was carried out with the collaboration of
the following institutions:

Figure 12

Oceanographic modelling of the dredging (Fig. 12)

Bucket dredging has proven to be the most effective
system, not only in terms of output rate and the solid/
liquid proportion, but also because it means using
human and material means that are easily available for
the sector (many of the ships and cranes used in mussel
farming have the capacity for such operations), although
if the intention were to apply it to an entire mussel raft
zone, it would be advisable to use specialized ships for
dredging and dredgers since one of the limiting factors
is the storage capacity for material on board.

is unable to escape. It is possible to apply a system for

filtering the water with the minimum loss of sediment.
c) select the size of the bucket in terms of the
thickness of the substrate. The output rate of a large
bucket is higher, but if more volume than is needed is
extracted, this will entail a fall in the efficiency of the
dredger and will increase costs.

In the light of the experience built up in the course of

this pilot action, the following technical improvements
for bucket dredging are proposed:

Since before the start of the pilot sediment extraction

action, in the course of its development and subsequent
to finalization of the same, environmental monitoring
and a follow-up of any possible effect on mussel farming
was conducted.
The results of evaluating the
impact of extracting sediments
on mussel farming and on its
surroundings failed to indicate
any negative effect on the
production variables nor on
the parameters of pollution

conditions in the area, for the season of the year involved

(winter) and for the extent of contamination from the
material extracted. The notion is not discarded that when
implementing the most intense or largest scale works, in
areas with higher anthropogenic contamination or with
different hydrodynamic conditions, that the results of
the environmental monitoring
may differ.
From the environmental
viewpoint, two critical points
were identified that would
affect the decision to extract
sediments in a given area:

But however, it was noted that

there was the presence in the
sediments of dynoflagellate cysts potentially producers
of toxins, their resuspension during extraction and the
possibility, albeit remote, of the same being viable.
These results are considered as valid and representative
for the scale of work in the experience conducted
(dredging a single mussel raft) for the oceanographic

i) Noting the presence in the

sediments of dynoflagellate
cysts that are potentially
producers of toxins, the
resuspension of the same
during extraction and the
possibility, albeit remote, of
the viability of the same, would
call for an analysis of the risk
of generating episodes of toxic
phytoplankton.
ii) Likewise, it would be essential to look into the
effects that may be caused by extracting sediments
on the biota in areas where the concentration of
anthropogenic contaminants in sediments were greater
than in the zone selected for the pilot action.

As regards the effects of the accumulation of

biodeposits, from the environmental point of view,
studies conducted prior to this project noted a clear
increase in detritivore communities, without noting a
fall in the abundance and biodiversity of species. This
means that, although there are some disturbing aspects
involved, such as the very low redox potential and
the high level of S and C, the current situation of the
bottoms of mussel rafts can not be considered, for the
time being, as serious, which leaves room to manoeuvre
for broadening knowledge.
It is also important to determine what the real
contribution of mussel farming is to the sediments
underneath the rafts and what the contribution is from
continental contributions. An in-depth study of the
bibliographic information has underlined the uncertainty
and lack of representativeness of the data available on
the volume of deposits generated by farming. On this
issue, it would be advisable to propose a more rigorous
use of the term biodeposit since it is used indistinctly,
both to refer to mussel faeces and pseudofaeces, as
well as to the entire organic fraction of the sediments,

With the information obtained from these studies, it

would be possible to identify the conditions in which the
expected benefits compensate for the risks of extracting
these materials: it will then be possible to determine in
which zones, at what point in time and on what scale
it would be appropriate to carry out such operations.
It would be possible to find out if there is a critical
level, as from which it is necessary to carry out these
cleaning operations, in which cases it is not advisable
to mobilize the sediments and to put forward measures
for protecting the resources or recommendations for
managing the material extracted.

3.3. Managing mussel byproduct

Regarding the mussel byproduct wastes (Fig. 15)
the objective involved developing a system for the
collection and transport of the waste byproducts
associated to mussel culture operations, to be
validated with its implementation on a pilot-scale.
Samplings performed throughout an initial
work campaign made it possible to determine the
percentage of waste byproduct generated depending
on different variables. In view of these percentages
and the information gathered regarding data on mussel
production, it has been possible to obtain a diagnosis
on waste byproduct production by mussel type and
production area.

Gaps of knowledge

Figure 14
Despite the fact that the results obtained from the
demonstration actions make it possible to respond to a
large part of the objectives of the project, in the course
of the tasks, diverse queries and areas where there is a
lack of knowledge arose that need to be cleared up before
designing a management strategy for sediments.
It is considered essential to continue conducting
studies in order to determine the risks and benefits
that may arise from extracting sediments (both for the
ecosystem and for mussel farming) and to evaluate
8

which leads one to establishing a single link not

scientifically proven between the organic matter
detected in the sediments located underneath rafts
and the rafts themselves. Taking this approach into
account, it is essential to consider the different origin of
the sediments that build up on these bottoms, be they
of land origin (momentary contributions such as river
contributions, urban, industrial or diffuse contributions
such as those coming from runoffs) or of marine origin
(due to floating farming or to primary production).

Figure 16

them in terms of any possible effect of the accumulation

of biodeposits underneath the rafts.

Several management alternatives were studied and

the pre-selected system was undertaken on a pilotscale in order to assess its possibilities for full-scale
implementation and identify measures of improvement.

In terms of evaluating the environmental impact of

extracting these materials, apart from the critical aspects
mentioned earlier, it is appropriate to conduct a study on
the extent of the effects, if any, on the benthonic fauna
and flora, on archaeological heritage and on the effects
that the resuspension of sediments may have in the
event of being polluted.
Figure 15

Results
The mussel byproduct waste is produced on board
mainly at the thinning out stage and the harvest for fresh
consumption (Fig 16). The build up in harvesting mussel
for processing are not considered since they originate
on land and, therefore, are not for integrating into the
management system put forward. The amount of mussel
by-product waste generated is 18.8% of the total weight
of the mussel produced for consumption as fresh, and
1.2% of the total of mussel for plant processing.
Taking these percentages into account, it is estimated
that in 2004, taking the Galician rias as a whole, from
263,484 MT of mussel produced, and a total of 115,127
tonnes of mussel were sold for fresh consumption,

23,873 tonnes of waste by-product generating during

the operations.
Out of this volume, approximately 48.1% is water,
45.9% is inorganic matter (basically mussel shells) and
6% is organic matter. Considering the permanence of
waste on the storage platforms, 21.5% of its weight
could be expected after 3 days, and around 37% after 5
days, due to the loss of water. This involves a reduction
of the initial amount to 14.800 MT.
The management system finally proposed is based on
temporarily storing mussel byproduct waste on purpose
built floating platforms. These would be located at the
entrance to landing ports or in areas of the mussel raft
zones close to the same (Fig. 17 and 18).

Figure 19
could be in port in cases where the waste byproduct is
kept stored for several days on the platform and, when
reaching port, the discharging process takes a long
time.

Figure 17

It is proposed to improve the weak points in order

to make the implementation of this system technically
viable on a larger scale, as follows:

Figure 18

ADVANTAGES

ii) design and selection of sacks would be required to

make their usage easier, both during filling on the board
and when emptying out into the lorry (larger openings
and more adaptability to the machinery already on
the ships), the aim being to make handling the waste
byproduct easier and swifter.

3.4. Waste utilization

Smells kept out of the ports

Less complaints

Easier to land waste: queuing is

avoided in ports

More comfortable

Lower costs

More possibilities
for the system to be
successful

Simpler logistics

In the course of its implementation on a pilot-scale,

the managing system proposed (Fig. 19), whereby the
producers collect mussel byproduct waste, has been
accepted by them, although with certain modifications
to the sack and the machinery.
Transferring the sacks on mussel workboats to the
floating platforms located en route or at the entrance
to the ports is viable, with the proviso that they be well
positioned. The final platforms should be designed to
allow more than one boat to discharge at the same
time.
10

i) adapt the equipment on board, since some of them

let the waste byproduct be dumped into the sea.

This managing system facilitates the logistics of

transferring the sacks from the floating platform to port
and, from there, to the final destination, since it makes it
possible to accumulate sufficient volume to fill up a lorry.
This is due to the fact that no problems are caused in the
storage zone by decomposition of waste byproduct. A
mussel workboat could be appropriate for collecting the
bags, if this has the appropriate dimensions and type
of crane.
Although the smell generated on the platforms was
not considered to be a critical point in this pilot action, it

In the course of this task, samples of raft bottoms

and of waste byproducts generated during farming
operations were collected. Subsequent to this, the
components of all the samples were characterized by
applying chemical analysis in the laboratory in order to
determine their suitability for use in improving degraded
soils (Fig. 20).
Afterwards, tests with both types of wastes were
made, mixing them with other materials in different

proportions and for growing different vegetable species,

in order to determine the best protocol for their use.
This task was carried out by the LTA of the Technologic
Research Institute of the University of Santiago de
Compostela. As the material arrived at the mine, it
was deposited in an area where it was kept for several
months, piled up so that it would leach and mitigate the
serious problems of acidity in the soils and waters of the
mine. Following this period, the material was distributed

over a well orientated place, with a good level of sunlight

and an area of mine berm that was practically flat and
quite extensive.

c) Assessment of the applicability of the system for the

management of the wastes generated by the long-line
culture (Fig. 23).

Then the plots of land for seeding were defined and

the soil was prepared for sowing. The experience began
by selecting three types of edaphic material:

4. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF THE

PROJECT AND COST-PROFIT ANALYSIS

1. Mine soil with no type of treatment. Spoil Tecnosol.

2. Artificial soil prepared from raft waste. Tecnosol
comprising 30% of waste byproduct from mussel
farming operations, 30% from purifying plant mud,
30% in biomass and 10% agricultural-food waste.
3. Soil comprising waste byproduct from mussel
farming operations.

In order to conduct the tests, the following seeds were

sown:
Rapeseed, in five varieties: wild, Abyssinian mustard,
kabel, semund and rustic (Fig. 22).
Gramineae in blend of Lolium with white clover,
represented by F2.
Field beans: Vicia faba, on byways, given its
decomposing capacity.
Furthermore, for each of the crops, three soil enriching
conditions were tested, involving the application of triple
15 compost (Nitrogen, Phosphate and Potassium, 15%
of each element), in proportions of 300 k/Ha., 100 K/Ha
and nothing, which meant having 15 plots of land for
each material with rapeseed, three of each variety and
three further plots for the blend of gramineae. Field bean
was sown on byways, the idea being to enrich the soil at
these transects too.

Results
Considering the composition of the waste byproduct
from operations and of the biogenic sediments sampled,
in view of its liming capacity (high content in CaCO3),
organic C and N content, texture and content in S, it was
easy to demonstrate that is appropriate for use as a
corrector and amender for recovering soils, dumps and
wetlands in acidic mines.
The results indicated that the artificial Tecnosol

containing 30% of waste from mussel culture comprises

the best edaphic preparation for restoring and replanting
the soils. In this case, the production of aerial biomass
with different varieties of rapeseed varied from 5 to 14
MT/Ha (depending on the species and the enrichment
conditions) as opposed to 2 to 9 MT/Ha obtained with a
soil wholly made up of mussel byproduct waste. In the
case of Spoil Tecnosol, growth of the species was zero
under all the conditions.

d) Dissemination of the objectives and results of the

project at a regional, national and international level.

By implementing the pilot action for extracting

sediments, a comparison has been made of the different
extraction technologies available and their technical and
economic viability has been evaluated. In view of the
characteristics of the material accumulated underneath
the rafts, particularly due to their heterogeneous nature
and the presence of very fine sediments, it does not
appear to be possible to make a unequivocal selection
of any single technique that can be valid for all cases,
extracting with a bucket using a silt curtain has turned
out to be the most viable, from the technical and
economic point of view, taking into account the high
output rate obtained, the high solid/liquid ratio of the
material extracted and the costs per volume of mobilized
sediments. This system needs notable improvements
both as regards closure of the bucket and in the systems
used to confine turbidity.

extracting sediments (both for the ecosystem and for

mussel farming). These risks and benefits should be
carefully assessed in terms of the effects caused by the
accumulation of biodeposits underneath mussel rafts,
prior to tackling the sediment extraction operations.

Hydraulic/pneumatic dredging is unfeasible without

coupling a dewatering system, due to the high water
content in the material extracted. Integrating this
system in dredging operations involves extremely high
costs and logistic difficulties, which compromise its
viability. Manual extraction with divers entails important
limitations (low output rate, depth considerations and
limited operating time), but due to its high selectivity,
could be applied prior to using the bucket for extracting
solid waste.

Regarding to the waste utilization, by using it as

a mine soil amender, it has been successfully proven
to be useful for environmental benefits and potential
agricultural turnovers, which is possible to obtain from
soils prepared with a blend of materials including 30%
from mussel farming. Therefore, the possibility now
opens up to apply these materials in different types of
degraded soils, especially the acidic soils, mixing them
with other materials in different proportions and for
growing different vegetable species. This task has not
covered the legal aspects regulating the application of
these materials in soils, so that future planning for such
uses must take into account the legislation in force at
the time.

Without underestimating the use of all this

information, in the course of this task, uncertainties and
considerable knowledge gaps were identified in terms
of risk and environmental benefits that could arise from

Applying the management system for mussel

byproduct, tested under the project, would cut down
the contribution of materials to the bottoms, with the
subsequent environmental benefit. Both the theoretical
study and the system implementation results on a small
scale, make it possible to give a positive appraisal of
its technical and economic viability. Nonetheless, it is
important to underline the fact that there is no general
conviction among producers in terms of the traditional
practice of dumping mussel byproduct into the sea as
having a negative impact on the ecosystem.

3.5. Other project activities

Based on these results, the following activities were
carried out:
a) Development of a Good Practices Manual focused
on mussel byproduct waste management and addressed
to the mussel producers.
b) Development of a proposal of Plan for the Integral
Management of the wastes generated by the mussel
farming.

5. TRANSFERABILITY OF RESULTS
The works carried out have made it possible to
identify the most viable management techniques and
systems, from the technical and economic point of view,
both for sediments accumulated on the bottom and for
mussel byproduct generated on board. Their limitations
and improvement measures have been detected as well
as the uncertainties and knowledge gaps that need
to be clarified in order to take decisions regarding the
different management operations.
The results obtained can be transferred to other areas
in the European Union and the rest of the world where
molluscs are farmed both on rafts and using other

production systems, to the extent that the volume of

waste built up or their effects on ecosystems point to the
need to carry out mitigating actions. The techniques and
systems tested under this project may be evaluated for
their application, with the corresponding adaptations,
in managing production waste in other aquaculture
systems (e.g., fish species).
The procedures for restoring soils by using these
materials are potentially transferable to other areas
where degraded acidic soils are found that can be
regenerated by applying this type of material and with
recovery protocols.
