After submitting the Photographic Documentation, there are three possible outcomes:
A Rated Car: The FSI Judges find the car meets a basic standard of good engineering workmanship and
safety. The car will be allowed to compete in FSI and will have a reasonable chance to pass TechInspection
without major modification. A-Rated Cars will be favoured for TechInspection.
B Rated Car: The FSI Judges find the car needs some redesign / rework / remanufacture in order to meet the
minimum standard of good engineering workmanship and safety. Within 14 days of the photo submission, the
team will be sent a list of required improvements to be completed. The team will get a unique second chance
to redesign / correct / repair all checklist items, in the time remaining until the FSI competition. B-Rated car
will only be able to pass TechInspection once all the required improvements are made. If a B-Rated car will
apply for TechInspection and one or more items of the checklist are not properly reworked, the car will be set
to the end of the queue.
- C Rated Car: The FSI Judges find the car needs extensive redesign and/or remanufacturing in order to meet
the minimum standard of good engineering workmanship and safety. The car will be judged as ineligible to
compete in FSI. Within 14 days of photo submission, the team will be sent a list of required improvements.
The team will be obligated to resubmit the required photographic submissions by the 29th of November 2015.
Within 7 days of re-submission of photographic documentation, the team will be notified if their car passed,
and is now judged as a B car, or didnt pass. Failure to make satisfactory improvements / corrections will

At least one student must be holding a fire extinguisher at all times and be prepared to use it. This
student must be seen on the video during the engine start and when the car first moves.
If the starting and finish area will not be the same, a second student with a fire extinguisher has to wait
for the car in the finish area.
Engine must be started by the driver with no external help.
The Car must:
o

Move forward a minimum of 50 and a maximum of 100 meters

o Make a U turn of which the outside radius will be maximum 9.0 meters (see Formula SAE rule
D7.2.1) and delimited by one cone (or a similar soft device) at the U turn centre and a minimum
of 5 cones (or similar soft devices) on the outside line
o

Accelerate to a speed of approximately 40 kph after exiting the U turn and travel a minimum of 50 and a
maximum of 100 meters

o Brake and lock all four wheels. It is the responsibility of the team to provide a video where all
four wheels are clearly seen locked
o At the conclusion of the video test, the driver must bring the car to a complete stop, and then
egress in less than 5 seconds (as per Formula SAE 2015 Rule book rule: T 4.8 Driver Egress).

File Submission
Both photos and video (YouTube-link) must be submitted to: info@formulaStudent.in
Any additional documentation needs to be in .pdf format and in the form of a report.
Submission of files which require specific software to open and view the files will be treated as nonsubmissions.
Submission late by more than 10 days will be treated as non-submission. Non-submission will result in
teams being judged ineligible to compete at FSI.
Teams who submit photos & video ahead of the deadline will have more time to make corrections on
their car. All teams are strongly encouraged to send the required video / photo submissions as soon as
possible. (Sharp teams will take advantage of the huge advantage of having feedback ahead of the
competition.)

7.4 Ineligibility
If a car will be judged ineligible to compete at FSI, it will not be allowed to be presented for Tech Inspection, or
participate in any Static or Dynamic events. The teams spot will be offered to the next team on the Wait List.
However, the team is still allowed (and strongly encouraged) to come to FSI with their car and speak with
Design Judges and receive advice and insight on how to improve their next years car, and enjoy the FSI
atmosphere of learning and competing.

7.5 Summary
The focus of the Running Car Video requirement is to allow competitors to be better prepared for the FSI
competition when they arrive on-site, while ensuring that every team has a strong chance of quickly and easily
passing Tech Inspection. It is also a chance to identify weak teams in order to allow Wait List teams a chance
to compete. For too many years we have seen students come to Formula SAE/FS competitions world-wide,
only to either quickly break their car due to lack of testing, or spend all weekend thrashing on their car in a
failed last ditch attempt to get it running.
Clever and motivated FSI student competitors will easily see the benefit of essentially having their car
previewed by the FSI Design Judges ahead of the competition and then implementing the suggested
improvements

Quasi-static testing is not allowed. Only dynamic tests (drop down, sledge or pendulum test) are allowed.
On all cars, a 1.5mm solid steel or 4.0 mm solid aluminium anti-intrusion-plate must be integrated into the
Impact Attenuator. Alternative materials are prohibited. The anti-intrusion plate must be installed at the test
and must show that the maximum deflection is not more than 25.4mm. A simulation of the deflection is not
sufficient.
The test specimen should be built of the Impact Attenuator, the anti-intrusion-plate, a structure identically to
the front bulkhead of the car and an additional rigid structure that allows the anti-intrusion plate to deflect
unobstructed.
The anti-intrusion plate has to be connected to the font bulkhead in the same way as it will be on the car.
The crashed specimen must be made available to the technical inspectors at the event site.
A car will be judged ineligible, if the presented Impact Attenuator does not correspond either to the crashed
one or the car presented to Tech Inspection

8.2 Engine Lubrication System

The lowest point of the engine lubrication system must be no lower as the line between the lowest point of
the main roll hoop and the lowest frame rail behind the engine and/or lubrication system. If the engine oil
sump or any other part of the lubrication system is lower than this line (figure 1), it must be protected by a
sufficient skid plate, or frame tubes installed longitudinally under affected part of the engine lubrication
system.

form of welding.
Grinding of welded joints in not permitted.
Paint and/or powder coating is the only work allowed on welded joints.
A "critical structural component" is defined as any component which if fails would injure the driver, tech
inspector, course marshal or engineer near the vehicle.
8.8 Firewall
Firewall must be made of metal; no fabric, foams or lamination will be permitted. The Firewall has to be
sealed towards the frame and the floor close outs to prevent any leakages entering the driver compartment.
Gaps smaller than 5 mm, can be sealed with aluminium tape. Bigger gaps have to be closed by metal. Small
grommets may be used to lead-trough of cables and wires.
8.9
8.9.1

Electrical System and Shutdown System

Master Switches

There will be no deviation from FSAE IC4.1 and 4.2 for FSI 2016. This means that 2-pole Primary Master Switches (PMS)
are not permitted. As a clarification of IC4.3, the Cockpit-mounted Master Switch (CMS) must not shutdown the Engine
Control Unit (ECU) and there mustnt be any additional switches in the cockpit to switch the fuel pump and/or the
ignition system.
8.9.2

Batteries

Clarification of FSAE IC4.4.1: A battery will be declared securely attached to the frame when its not possible to move
it in any direction by hand.
Batteries with a weight greater than 1.5kg must be secured to the frame with a bolted connection. For lighter batteries
its allowed to use alternative mountings. Velcro tape or other tapes are not allowed for any battery mounting.

use. They must be separated from the driver by a firewall and must have a short circuit protection.
8.9.3

Wiring

All wiring must be done in a professional-like way. This includes the usage of crimped or soldered connections. Twisting
of wire ends is not proper connection and therefore not permitted.
All hot wires must be isolated. A wiring diagram showing all consumers and supplies, the injection and ignition system as
well as the whole shutdown circuit must be presented at Tech Inspection. Hand-drawn diagrams wont be accepted.
8.9.4

Brake Light and Brake Light Switch

The Brake Light must work properly also when the CMS or the Brake-Over-Travel Switch (BOTS) are engaged.
If a mechanical contact is used as Brake Light Switch, it must not be deformed or relocated when the driver is hitting the
brake pedal. This means that springs are not allowed as part of the switch.
In case the Brake Light will be switched based on the brake pressure, there must be one brake pressure sensor on each
brake circuit. The brake light must also be actuated when only one brake circuit is working (logical OR).
8.9.5

Frame Grounding

The frame must be connected with battery ground. The grounding must be done via bolts welded to the frame (no paint
on the bolt!). The wire must be attached to the bolt via a soldered or crimped ring eyelet and mounted with a nut.

tank will be filled to the fuel level line. All lubricants and coolants must be in the car. This weight will be the
cars Official weight. There will be a penalty if the car weight changes during Dynamic Competition. The
allowable weight tolerance is 5.0 kg.In the case of overweight or underweight in comparison to the Technical
Inspection weight, the team will be penalized -20 (twenty) points for each kg (or portion of a kg) of additional
or missing weight. This point penalty will be deducted from the Engineering Design Event score.(Each 0.1 to
1.0 kg = -20 points)
9.3 Inspection Holes
To allow the verification of tubing wall thicknesses, 4.5 mm (0.18 inch) inspection holes must be drilled in a
non-critical location of both the Main Hoop and the Front Hoop. In addition, the Technical Inspectors may
check the compliance of other tubes that have minimum dimensions specified. This may be done by the
drilling of additional inspection holes at the inspectors request. Inspection holes must be located such that
the outside diameter can be measured ACROSS the inspection hole with a Vernier calliper, i.e. there must be
access for the Vernier Calliper to the inspection hole and to the outside of the tube one hundred eighty
degrees (180) from the inspection hole.
9.4 Bodywork
The team should design the Bodywork of the car in such a way that it takes no more than 5 minutes to remove
the body (Nose, Sidepods, Side Panels etc.) from the vehicle when presented in race ready condition.
9.5 Inspection Condition
Vehicles must be presented for technical inspection in finished condition, i.e. fully assembled, all fluids filled in
except fuel, complete and ready-to-run. Technical inspectors will not inspect any vehicle presented for
inspection in an unfinished state.
Presenting a vehicle for Technical Inspection constitutes a declaration by the team that they have determined
by self-inspection that the vehicle complies with the Rules.
