MP Jeremy Corbyn has won the election for Labour Party leader. Weve been told for years that no politician who stood out against austerity, racism and war could ever be elected. Yet Jeremy Corbyn has spoken to thousands of people across Britain and received such widespread support precisely because he opposes austerity and the austerity-lite that Ed Miliband and Labour offered up at the last general election. Weve also been told that anyone who speaks out for refugees and against racism is a vote loser. In the last election Tory and Labour politicians alike tried to ape the racist policies of Nigel Farage and UKIP to win votes.
Refugees
But over recent days weve seen a wave
of sympathy and support for refugees fleeing poverty and war sweep across Europe. There have already been big demonstrations in British towns and cities in defence of refugees and tens of thousands are set to march in their defence this weekend. Something big is changing in British politics. The referendum campaign and the huge vote for the Scottish National Party in the general election showed how things had shifted North of the border. The Corbyn campaign shows that things are changing in England and Wales too. But even if Corbyn is elected the Tories will still be in power. We cant wait four more years to fight back because the attacks on working class people are happening now!
National demonstration
No to austerity Rage against the Tories Sunday 4 October, Manchester
Demonstration at Tory Party conference
called by the Trades Union Congress. Followed by a week of events across the city organised by the Peoples Assembly Against Austerity.
Cameron wants to keep stirring up
racism against refugees and to use the refugee crisis as an excuse for more illegal bombing in Syria. The Tories anti-union Trade Union Bill is set for its second reading in Parliament on Monday 14 September. This new anti-union bill seeks to tie the hands of the trade unions and prevent them mounting effective resistance to attacks from the Tories and the employers. On Sunday 4 October the TUC has called a protest at the Tory Party conference in Manchester against austerity and for workers rights. We all should mobilise for a huge protest in Manchester and for a mass turnout against the Tories Trade
Union Bill at the TUC lobby of
parliament in London on Monday 2 November. And all the time we have to fight the attempts to divide working class people. Its not refugees that are selling off our hospitals and schools or holding down wages its the Tories and their rich friends. We should say that refugees are welcome here. Lets hope that Jeremy Corbyn is elected on Saturday. But as weve seen in Greece where the radical Syriza government has come to grief, even if a Corbyn government was elected it would still face the power of unelected bankers and bosses.
Movement
We need a movement that is strong
enough to take on those fat cats, and to defeat austerity. That means taking to the streets on 4 October. But it also means we need the kind of powerful strike action that can derail David Camerons plans for good. The TUC meets this weekend in Brighton. Our union leaders need to lead real resistance. That means calling action and striking back to win.
