Year 6 Curriculum Newsletter Autumn 2015

Welcome back to the new school term and your first term in Year 6. We have an exciting time planned this Autumn, much of which is based around our context for learning about the
Vikings. We will be asking ourselves Were the Vikings always victorious or were they vicious? . The information on this sheet will give you a brief overview of some of the activities Year 6 will be doing this
term across the curriculum.

English
Much of our Literacy work will be linked to our study of the Vikings, and our class novel Erik the Viking by Terry Jones. The
children will engage in both non-fiction and fictional writing.
They will write non-chronological reports about the Vikings
focusing on who they were, where they came from and reasons
for their sea voyages to Britain. They will also build on their understanding of the features and structure of newspaper reports
linking this to the first Viking invasions in AD794. They will look at
characterisation, settings and atmosphere in fictional texts
(linked to our class novel) and write short stories.
The study of grammar, punctuation and spelling will be ongoing
through the year.

Mathematics
The children will work through the new Year 6 Framework for
Maths, covering the following areas:

Number & Place Value

Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication & Division

Fractions (decimals & percentages)

Ratio & Proportion

Algebra

Measurement

Properties of Shapes

Statistics
The children will also work on developing their
mental
strategies.
Please ensure that your child is continues to work on multiplication tables to 12x12, and knows the related division facts for
these.

Computing
Following the New Curriculum for computing, the children will:

use the internet for research (use a search engine using

keyword searches)

develop their presentation skills by creating a sophisticated

multimedia presentation, and by using appropriate text/
image formatting tools

continue to develop their skills using iPads, and use the VLE
to access homework and other class/school tasks

be encouraged to develop their own digital portfolios on

their blogs and learn basic programming.

Trips and Visits

We are hoping to invite some Viking visitors into school and to
create a Viking museum during the course of the term.

RE
Following our whole school scheme of work, the children will look
at what Christians believe about giving?
They will also touch on Viking beliefs and Christianity during the
Viking age.

at a new value each month and exploring what it means to them.
