Seminar 9 Green integrity and raising
standards the Lahmeyer view

Outline
1. Lahmeyer at a glance
2. Lahmeyers green experience
3. What do Lahmeyers project manager report
4. What is the perception in Germany
5. What are the owners of our companies looking for
6. Conclusion

1. Lahmeyer at a glance
Lahmeyer group: 1500 staff with sales of app. 200
MUSD in 2011
International sales, mainly in MENA, South Asia and
Africa account for 87% of total sales
One of the global leader in Hydropower
App. 80% of sales related to the energy sector

2. Lahmeyers green experience

Working on renewable energy since more than ten years
Ranked No. 5 in latest ENR report on International Design Firms for
wind power and solar energy
At present working on numerous renewable energy master plans in
Northern Africa

We are involved in numerous large multipurpose dam projects

around the world which are
storing water as the basis for sustainable food production
producing clean high value energy
reducing risk of flooding

We have more than 40 years of experience in building pump

storage plants, at present the only cost efficient method to
store electrical energy in large volumes

3. What do Lahmeyers project

manager report
Our clients are looking for
Financial sustainability; investment decisions are purely based on
financial feasibility;
Except for Hydropower governments around the world need to trigger
investments into renewable energy by financial incentives (subsidies,
tax credits, etc.) or by forcing utilities to generate a certain amount of
renewable energy
Project solutions which are accepted not only by investors and
permitting authorities, but also by local communities (social and
environmental feasibility)

In large dam projects we see a special phenomena:

NGOs from western countries fight against new projects, arguing that
projects are not sustainable, whereas not only investors and authorities
support these projects, but also local communities and local NGOs

4. What is the perception in Germany

Large infrastructure projects face public opposition unheard of
in the past. Examples are:

Stuttgart railroad station

New runways at Frankfurt or Munich airport
1400 MW pump storage plant Atdorf in the black forest
High voltage transmission lines needed for the Ehergiewende
Offshore or onshore wind parks

Opposition is more and more coming from senior citizens,

often belonging to the upper middle class (professionals)
Permitting of large infrastructure is driven by getting social
and environmental acceptance, often at almost any cost

5. What are the owners of our

companies looking for
Let us see, which KPIs the 10 largest International design firms (according to last
ENR report) present to their investors in their latest high-level investor relation
presentation, report or press release?

6. Conclusion
Green integrity is yet to make it to the Board rooms.
It is mostly about making money, not so much about
making a better world.
How can the World Banks vision A World without
Poverty be reached? Certainly by more sustainable
projects!
But we also need to keep in mind: Sustainable projects
will only evolve in an environment not tainted with
corruption!
Green integrity requires integrity to start with.
