repair procedures for Fellowes office shredders, Models
320-2, 320C-2, 380-2, 380C-2, C-320, C-320C, C-380, and
C-380C. The manual provides maintenance procedures, a
list of required tools, and a troubleshooting guide with
flowcharts. In addition, the manual contains a wiring
diagram and an illustrated parts list for each shredder.
Use the troubleshooting guide for help in identifying a
specific problem. Then, turn to the appropriate section in
the manual for instructions.
Follow the service procedures carefully. Always note the
location, number, color, and position of parts and wires
before removing them so that they can be reassembled
correctly. If there are no specific instructions for
reassembling an item, simply reverse the disassembly
procedure
From the service and repair perspective, all four models are
similar, except for the cutting assemblies. The 320-2, 380-2,
C-320, and C-380 are strip-cut shredders. The 320C-2,

Safety
When servicing a shredder, observe the following safety
precautions:
n

Never put a hand, fingers, or foreign

objects into the paper entry slot or throat.

Keep all loose articles of clothing, ties,

jewelry, long hair, or other loose objects
away from the paper entry slot.

Always turn off and unplug the power cord

at the wall outlet before doing any work on
a shredder.

Use only the specified replacement parts.

See the Parts List beginning on page 35.

Wall Mounting
Each shredder includes a wall mounting kit (PN 31742).
This kit is used to secure the shredder to a wall to
comply with UL 60950 stability requirements. The wall
mounting kit ccntains a spacer that allows the shredder
to be mounted slightly away from the wall for proper
ventilation.

General Maintenance
The shredders are designed to perform consistently
with a minimum amount of maintenance. This section
contains recommendations for external and internal
cleaning, inspection, and lubrication.

External Cleaning
Clean the exterior of the shredder with a soft cloth.
Moisten the cloth with a mild solution of detergent
(such as dish-washing liquid) and warm water. Use
detergent sparingly to avoid contact with electrical
parts.
Do not use flammable synthetic oil, petroleum-based
products, or aerosol lubricants of any kind. Do not use
chemical cleaners, solvents, or aerosol sprays to clean
the exterior of the shredder.

Internal Cleaning
The shredder does not require periodic internal
cleaning. However, when the shredder is being serviced
perform these maintenance tasks:
n

Remove any paper strips or pieces that

may have collected around the cutting
assembly.

If lubricated parts are dusty, wipe away the

dust with a soft cloth.

Use a small brush or vacuum to remove

dust from the non-lubricated surfaces such
as the motor, cutting assembly, housing,
and wiring.

Do not use chemical cleaners, solvents, or aerosol

sprays to clean the interior of the shredder.

Inspection
When the shredder is being serviced, visually inspect it
for defects such as loose screws, loose terminals and
connectors, and any other problems you notice.
Correct any defects and test the shredder before
returning it to the customer.

Lubrication
Only confetti-cut shredders (320C-2, 380C-2, C-320C,
and C-380C) require lubrication to ensure proper
operation. If used at or near capacity, the machines
should be oiled every time the basket is emptied, when
it becomes noisy, and when it is serviced. Use Fellowes
Powershred Lubricant (#35250) or other non-aerosol
vegetable-based oil in a long-nozzle container. Do not
use flammable synthenic oil, petroleum-based products,
or aerosol lubricants of any kind.
To apply oil:

Press and hold the Manual Forward button for at

least 3 seconds.

Press and hold the Reverse button for at least

3 seconds.

Repeat the forward/reverse sequence 3 or more

times.

LIft the paper entry flap and apply oil over the full
width of the cutting cylinders through the paper
entry slot.

Operation
The operator panel is located on the shredder cover.
The panel contains control switches and buttons,
indicator LEDs, and a Ready light.

Troubleshooting
Troubleshooting the shredder begins with checking the
machine for possible faults. Possible causes for machine
malfunctions include:
n

Paper feed problems

Electrical problems

Mechanical problems

Paper Feed Problems

Paper jams and a full wastebasket are two common
problems. Indicator LEDs on the shredder cover help to
identify these problems. Both of these are easy to solve.
In addition, birdnesting, a build up of paper shreds along
the underside of the cutting assembly, can be a problem
on confetti-cut shredders.
CAUTION!
Never attempt to force jammed material
through the shredder.

If the paper jam light is on, follow these steps until the
light turns off.

1
2

Unplug the shredder.

Plug in the shredder. Press and hold the

reverse (R) control switch to back paper out of the
paper entry slot. Try pulling gently on the paper to
remove it from the shredder.

Alternate between forward and reverse, as

needed:

Check the wastebasket and empty if full. Replace

the basket and make sure the door ajar switch is
fully engaged.

a Press and hold the Manual Forward button for a

few seconds.
b Press and hold the Reverse control switch for a
few seconds.
c Continue alternating between forward and
reverse until the jam clears.
CAUTION!
The shredder may be damaged if you alternate
too rapidly between forward and reverse.

To clear a buildup of paper shreds from the underside of

the cutting assembly (also called birdnesting):

1
2

Unplug the shredder.

3
4

Plug in the shredder.

Check the wastebasket and empty if full. Replace

the basket and make sure the paper full switch is
fully engaged.

Alternate between forward and reverse to clear the

birdnest:
a Press and hold the Manual Forward button for a
few seconds.
b Press and hold the Reverse (R) switch in the for
a few seconds.

c Continue alternating between forward and

reverse a few times.
Feed the maximum cutting capacity (e.g.,
14-16 sheets of 20 lb. paper for the 320C-2 and
C-320C shredders), at one time, if needed to clear
the birdnest.

Electrical Problems
The most common electrical problems result from an
opened door, loose wires, or a defective PC board.
Check the basket to make sure it is not overfilled and is
properly positioned in the cabinet. Press the
Automatic (I) switch, then press the Manual Forward
button to start the shredding operation.
If the PC board is defective, the shredder may not run at
all. Other indicators that the PC board is defective might
be if the shredder runs in reverse but not forward or the
LED lights do not turn off.
Occasionally the capacitor may be defective. Typical
problems caused by a defective capacitor are that the
motor runs but with no power.

Mechanical Problems
Mechanical problems can often be identified by listening
to the sound of the machine when it is operating and
observing whether the paper cutting capacity drops.
If a confetti-cut machine is making excessive noise, it
may need to be lubricated. Try oiling the cutting shafts.
To do this, apply the lubricating oil through the paper
entry slot on the cover. Run the cutting system forward
and backward several times without feeding paper. Then
feed paper through the shredder. See the Lubrication
instructions in the General Maintenance section of this
manual for additional instructions.
If these simple solutions do not solve the problem, use
the troubleshooting flowcharts to help identify and solve
the problem.

30

Confirm the adjustment by shredding the rated

number of sheets listed on Table 1.

If the shredder jams, turn the screw

counterclockwise and retest with the rated
number of sheets.

If the shredder does not jam, feed the

minimum number of sheets to make sure it
will not cause a jam at the minimum setting.

When the current limit adjustment screw is set

properly, place a drop of Loctite thread locking
liquid on the screw to secure the setting.

Reassemble the shredder and test the basic

shredder functions, including:

a Make sure the Ready Light (green) shines

brightly when the power is on. This indicates
the correct LED aligment between the PC
board and the cover.

b Open the cabinet door to make sure the Door

Ajar light is working.

c Open the cabinet door and cover the bin full

sensors with a piece of masking or non-clear
tape. Close the door, turn on the shredder,
and wait about 8 seconds for the bin full
sensor to turn on. When the bin full sensor
light turns on, remove the tape from the
sensors.

d Press the Manual Forward button to make

sure it is working.

e Place a sheet of paper in the paper entry slot

to make sure the auto-start feature is
working.
