PUBLIC SAFETY
National Night Out August 4. This annual event hosted by the
Metropolitan Police Department to strengthen community relations
between MPD and DC residents. MOLA Director Reyes and her
outreach staff worked a booth at 18th and Columbia Road NW on the
Suntrust Plaza in support of this years National Night Out. .

Metropolitana (MPD, por sus siglas en ingls) tiene el propsito de fortalecer las relaciones entre MPD y los
residentes de DC. La directora Jackie Reyes y algunos miembros del equipo de alcance comunitario de la
Oficina del Alcalde para Asuntos Latinos dieron informacin en un espacio pblico en la esquina de la
Columbia Road y la calle 18, en la plaza de Suntrust, en apoyo a la iniciativa de National Night Out de este
ao.

Bowser, Director Reyes, Deputy and the personnel of the Office on Latino Affairs attended the Mayors press
conference on guns at the Kennedy Recreation Center. Afterwards, they worked with the Mayors team to
canvas Columbia Heights. The following day some members of the outreach team canvassed other
neighborhood areas in NW DC.
Alcance Comunitario, e informacin sobre seguridad pblica y armas de fuego 19 y 20 de
agosto Ante el llamado de la Alcaldesa Muriel Bowser, la directora, el subdirector y el equipo de trabajo de
MOLA, estuvieron presentes en el Centro de Recreacin Kennedy durante la conferencia de prensa de la
Alcaldesa sobre las armas de fuego. Al trmino de la conferencia de prensa, trabajaron en conjunto con el
equipo de la alcaldesa para repartir Volantes en Columbia Heights. Al siguiente da, el equipo de alcance
comunitario reparti ms volantes en los vecindarios continuos del noroeste de la ciudad.

MMOLA Director Reyes, her Deputy and outreach staff

participated in the Mayors Slow Down Campaign the first
day back to school. The purpose of this event was to raise
awareness about driving safely on the street and slowing
down when children are crossing the street on their way to
school.

_Ceremonia de Clausura del Programa de Trabajo de Verano para
Jvenes en el edifico municipal Reeves Center. Hubo un total de 125
jvenes participantes en este evento y recibieron sus constancias de
participacin en el programa. Felicitamos a todos los jvenes que
participaron en el programa de este ao! Esperamos que el prximo ao
nos podamos encontrar de nuevo.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH
La Luz de Mundo Food Distribution August 11. MOLAs
outreach team gave out food to 50 families at La Luz de Mundo located at
1222 Rhode Island Avenue NW; and on August 13, MOLAs Outreach team
gave out food to 150 families at the Church of Christ.

MOLA SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT
Summer Youth Mock Hearing August 7. A
group of summer youth participated in a mock hearing at the Wilson
building hosted by MMOLA. The youth chose to talk about the illegal
selling of synthetic drugs that is a serious problem in DC. The Youth
mentored by our MOLA intern Tony Donaldson served as Chair,
Councilmembers and Witnesses, drafted questions and testimony and
did a superb job. 125 youth from the summer youth employment
program attended this event in support of their peers. Special thanks to:
CM Ward 1 Brianne Nadeau, CM Anita Bonds , MPD ,DOES , Dept., of
Behavioral health and DPR.
Simulacin de Audiencia del Consejo municipal para el
Programa de Verano para Jvenes 7 de agosto
Un grupo de jvenes participaron en una audiencia en el edificio Wilson
presentado por la Oficina del Alcalde para Asuntos Latinos. Los jvenes
seleccionaron el tema de los riesgos de la venta de drogas sintticas en
DC. Los jvenes fueron guiados en su dilogo por nuestro pasante en
MOLA, Tony Donaldson, quien lider la simulacin, mientras que los
estudiantes en el papel de concejales y testigos desarrollaron preguntas y
testimonios, realizando un extraordinario trabajo. Un total de 125
miembros del programa de trabajo de verano para jvenes participaron
en este evento en apoyo a sus colegas. Agradecimientos a Concejal del
distrito Uno Brianne Nadeau, Concejal Anita Bonds, MPD ,DOES , Dept.,
of Behavioral health and DPR.

La Oficina del Alcalde para Asuntos Latinos fue el anfitrin de la

El equipo de alcance comunitario de la Oficina del Alcalde para Asuntos
Latinos, entreg comida a 50 familias en la iglesia La Luz del Mundo, que
se localiza en el 1222 de la Avenida Rhode Island, en el noroeste de la
ciudad. El 13 de agosto, el equipo de alcance comunitario distribuy
comida a 150 familias en la Iglesia de Cristo.

MISSION ZERO CONTINUED
MOLA/DMV Pre-screening event August 8 and August 22.
MOLA and the DMV partnered and hosted a pre-screening event at
MOLA. The purpose of this event was to give Latino residents to have
their documents pre-screened so they could make an appointment to go
to the DMV and get a Limited Purpose Drivers License ID. On August 8
MOLA served 168 constituents and on August 22 MOLA served 244
constituents.

proporcion informacin a un
total de 168 personas y el 22
de agosto un total de 244

SUMMER FUN
MMB F.R.E.S.H. Faith Based Block Party August 15. MOLA Director
Reyes had fun participating in Mayor Muriel Bowsers end of summer block
party celebrating community at the Emmanuel Baptist Church located in SE.
It was a beatutiful day and this event included food, refreshments, and
entertainment.

La directora de la Oficina del Alcalde para Asuntos Latinos tuvo una divertida
participacin en la fiesta de clausura de verano de la Alcaldesa Muriel
Bowser cuyo objetivo fue celebrar a la comunidad en la Iglesia Bautista
Emmanuel, localizada en suroeste de la ciudad. Fue un hermoso da que
incluy comida, bebidas y divertido entretenimiento.

EDUCATION
Tamales and Caf August 6. La Clinica del Pueblo, who is one of MOLAs
grantees hosted Tamales and Caf . MOLA Director Reyes enjoyed
attending this event and meeting with the Director. Staff gave tours of their
office space and shared information about their services.

DCPS-Japan Exchange Presentation August 6. MOLA Deputy Director

Josue Salmeron and LA Dr. Cecilia Castillo gave a presentation to a group of
exchange students with a program called Globalize DC/CGEL from Japan.
The purpose of the presentation was to share information on the role that
Office on Latino Affairs has in the Latino Community in DC and the role that
government plays in life. The program coordinator sent a very nice thank
you note and photos included here.

CONSTRUCTION CLASSES IN SPANISH August 31. The Office on Latino Affairs

has partnered with Uniting People with Opportunities, (UPO), to provide
construction classes taught in Spanish. Classes begin on September 8, 2015
at 915 Girard Street NE. Please contact MMOLA at 202 671 2825 if you

HOUSING - CNHED Open House August 11. MOLA Director Reyes

attended an Open House hosted by the Coalition for Non-profit Housing and
Economic Development at their new office on 15th Street NW. The Coalition
invited guests to celebrate with them victories achieved in the passing of
this years budget that includes increased funding for the Housing
Production Fund. This is a key victory because the fund continues to build
out affordable housing units across the city.
Apertura de la nueva oficina de la Coalicin de Organizaciones de Vivienda
y Desarrollo Econmico (CNHED, por sus siglas en ingls) 11 de agosto
Jackie Reyes, la directora de MOLA, asisti a un evento de bienvenida donde
la coalicin abri sus puertas de la nueva oficina en la calle 15 en el noroeste
de la ciudad. La coalicin extendi una invitacin para celebrar con ellos sus
xitos como la aprobacin de su presupuesto anual que incluye el aumento
de los fondos para la creacin de vivienda. Esta ha sido una victoria clave
porque los fondos ayudarn a la continua construccin de viviendas
accesibles en toda la ciudad.

been busy working on the planning of Hispanic Heritage Month 2015. The

La Oficina del Alcalde para Asuntos Latinos ha trabajado a marchas forzadas
en la planeacin del Mes de la Herencia Hispana 2015. La Directora de la
Oficina del Alcalde para Asuntos Latinos, el subdirector de la agencia, y
miembros del equipo de trabajo se reunieron con los Consulados de
Amrica Latina para discutir la planeacin del evento de inicio para el Da de

FRESH START SPOTLIGHT: MOLAs Grantee

City Blossoms is one of MOLAs grantees that provide Latinos services in the community.
As we continue to work with Cardozo students towards the development of their garden
program and space we get to see more and more of the knowledge that participants are
bringing from their past experiences in the U.S. and their home countries. These
experiences are also physically starting to shape the gardens. For example Daniel is a 16
GARDENS AT CARDOZO CAMPUS year old participant from Guatemala. When it was time for us to begin planting summer
crops Daniel shared how he was taught to grow tomatoes. A technique that is new to City
Blossoms but definitely has the potential of creating a better support for tomato plants. The technique was used for all the tomato
seedlings in the garden. This was a wonderful opportunity for Daniel to be proud of his skills which at times may not seem
applicable to his life in DC and for the Cardozo space to start reflecting its gardeners. Dr. R oane -Cardozos Principal

FRESH START SPOTLIGHT: DC Government Latino Intern

Brandon Perez: A native Washingtonian (Puerto Rican Heritage) who holds a Bachelors and
Masters degree in Science in Architecture from The Catholic University of America.
He is currently working in the Office of Planning as Bilingual Development Review Planner II-intern.
Due to his skills, Brandon has also helped with the Historic Preservation Board , BZA, Sustainable D.C.
and Urban Design working on the following projects; reinvestment plan for the Historic District of Anacostia and EcoDistrict in Congress Heights. He found out about the internship through the MOLA Biweekly employment newsletter.
Brandon Perez: Office of Planning Intern

Im a unique individual who is passionate about the built environment, and always awe inspired by the
natural. I have a plethora of interests, and a fascination for the Japanese Culture. I like to read, ride my
bike along the Capital Crescent Trail, and photograph everything around me. Brandon PerezBrandon is the reason why summer intern opportunities exist. He is an emerging leader, working on
real world issues, which will have a positive impact on all District residents. He is truly an asset to the
