Hi Everyone, Sorry for the delay this fortnight in getting out the Update but as most would be aware the
Flowerdale Recovery Committee has been busy working on Recovery Plan due at VBBRA by 18 th August.
The FRC were only made aware of this two weeks ago. So my apologies in delay.
Community Meetings
Community meetings will be held at the Rec Reserve, Spring Valley Road on Friday evenings commencing 8pm
Please note: Meeting will now be held fortnightly. Next meeting is 21st August.
The CFA light tanker will be delivered to brigrade by November this year.
FRC send weekly Status Reports to VBBRA, Shire and we had not received any correspondence over 4 weeks.
For the first time Betsy Harrington, VBBRA has now acknowledged our report and willing to communicate
with us.
Flowerdale Primary school children went to Wicked and had a great time. It was partly funded by Darley
Stud and other organisations.
The commercial kitchen at the Recreation Reserve is now nearly complete for operation. It will be open in
approx. 1 week. We are planning an event to celebrate opening details will be available once organised.
The FRC meet with Marysville & Kinglake Recovery Committees and discussed ideas and it was decided that
if we all having the same concerns or any other issues we would report collective to the agencies involved.
The Flowerdale Recovery Plan is due on 18th August to VBBRA which the FRC only found out recently. We
have been working on document to meet the deadline put upon us. We also meet with working engines last
Monday night to discuss where we were at with plan & then VBBRA, Shire & DHS representatives were
invited to meeting. It was a very successful evening and now look forward to working with all groups to
achieve the community recovery plan.
IPO should be operational by early next week. Furniture & computers etc have now arrived which Darley
Stud has supplied for the use of operation.
The FRC have been approached about when material aid is likely to closed. We decided to seek community
consultation on this matter. In this update there is a survey to be filled out by the community for further
discussion as to the needs of the community.
Liam McCarthy, Community Development Officer, Shire is working on which sites are most suitable for the
Kinder.
Liam McCarthy is also working on holding a Mens Day. As information comes to hand we forward on all
details.
As part of the bushfire recovery author Arnold Zable will be visiting the Flowerdale area to conduct a series of story
collecting sessions. These sessions will be comprised of writing workshops for those who would like to write their
stories and interview sessions with Arnold for those who wish to tell their story.
Those telling their story will be recorded and a CD made of their interview for them to keep. All sessions are
completely confidential and the stories remain the property of the person telling them.
Arnold is a prize winning author himself and a marvelous story teller. He has considerable experience in assisting and
encouraging people to find and write their story.
All sessions will be conducted in the Flowerdale Hall commencing Friday August 14 and with two follow up
sessions on Friday September 11 and Thursday October 15.
Bookings are essential for both the writing and the interview sessions. Book in on 5772 0349.

The Victorian Government will put on 700 seasonal firefighters across the state ahead of the
bushfire season with crews to be deployed from September, a month earlier than last year.
Inspecting fire preparation works in Tremont, the Premier John Brumby said the Government
would next week launch a recruitment campaign for DSE seasonal project firefighters, with 80 to
start next month and increasing to 700 firefighters on the ground by the start of summer.
They will join over 2700 firefighters from the DSE and partner agencies and more than 59,000
CFA volunteers, including 1400 volunteers who have joined since the Black Saturday fires.
“Our Government’s top priority is to work with emergency service agencies and Victorian
communities to prepare the state for the bushfire season ahead,” Mr Brumby said.
“The fire season is less than 100 days away and it’s vital that we are all ready. While the extreme
weather conditions of Black Saturday were unprecedented, climate change, 13 years of drought
and dry forest and grass conditions mean we could see similar conditions this fire season.
“That’s why we are taking action to put in place extra resources through a record $1 billion budget,
improving communications systems and tendering selectively for a national early warning system
so that it’s in place ahead of the bushfire season.”
Minister for the Environment and Climate Change Gavin Jennings said the DSE would call for
applications from August 15 until September 6 with about 700 seasonal firefighters deployed by
the start of summer preparing and suppressing fires on Victoria’s public land.
“Every new project firefighter goes through rigorous training and each year we see many
returnees who bring with them skills and experience from previous seasons,” Mr Jennings said.
“Becoming a seasonal firefighter is a great way to make a difference to our state and I encourage
fit and able Victorians to apply.”
Today marks six months since the worst natural disaster in Australia’s history. On Black Saturday
173 people lost their lives and many others were seriously injured, 78 communities were impacted
and 430,000 hectares of land destroyed.
"Six months on, Black Saturday is still with us, because many members of our community are still
suffering the affects of the fires,” Mr Brumby said.
“We need to keep working together to help fire-affected individuals, families and communities get
back on their feet - as well as prepare for the coming fire season.
“That’s why our Government will lead a statewide bushfire preparedness week in October which
will involve a dedicated, intense whole-of-state effort to increase awareness and preparedness
ahead of the bushfire season.”
