R</3J and Communication
#R<3J is an adaptation of William Shakespeares famed tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. Set at
modern times, the play reveals the present condition in Manila through a plot involving politics,
sex, corruption, social media, drugs, and other problems of the society. #R<3J was my first time
watching a Dulaang UP production and it definitely exceeded my expectations. Through the
creativity of the director and production, Dulaang UP was able to reflect our societys cancers in
a manner that the younger generation would have no trouble on understanding and relating to it.
I appreciate how timely and relatable the play was. With the coming 2016 elections, the
play was able to capture the issues involving our candidates. Moreover it was able to show how
flawed the Philippine media is and the role it plays on romanticizing politics. Likewise, it
covered the issue of night life and drugs. When the audience can relate to the show, they feel
involved in the story. I believe that it is vital for a show to be able to communicate and connect
to the audience. Getting the attention of the audience and making them feel like what happening
on stage could also happen to them makes a show a memorable one for them.
Another commendable part of the show was the clever use of language. The play between
Congressman Montess sturdy and fluent English and Mayor Capules apologetic but insistent
Filipino was a nice metaphor of their difference as candidates. Their way of talking deepened the
contrast between the two characters. In addition, it was noticeable how the characters talked
differently while in front of the camera and when they were just talking with their family and
friends. This shows that one should consider the time and situation in adjusting ones language.
Just imagine if the candidates talked in the camera like how they talked in their homes and if J
Capule used the language she uses at the night club in one of her live shows. It is likely that it
would affect their images and hurt their careers. Also, the play did not fail to include how
unrefined the language of todays generation has become. It exhibited how the words like fuck,
gago, and other vulgarities had become a regular part of teens vocabularies.

The ending just shows how important it is that we have a flawless communication with
other people. If it was not for the miscommunication about J Capules suicide, R Montes would
have still been alive maybe they could even have had a happy ending. We should be clear and
certain about what we are saying because words that have been said cannot be taken back
anymore. The play showed that the difference between good and bad communication could be
life and death.
Overall, the entire play was nothing but entertaining. I didnt feel bored at any time
throughout the play. The relevance of the plot on todays generation and the twist of comedy
makes me want to go and see it again and watch more DUP productions. I would definitely
recommend anyone to watch it for its moral and entertainment value.
