El imperfecto de subjuntivo
(Imperfect Subjunctive)
Form
There are 2 forms of the imperfect subjunctive, which are used indistinctly.
A) -ara
Take the third person plural form of the preterit (e.g., hablaron), drop the -on from the
end, which gives you the stem (hablar-) for the imperfect subjunctive. The endings are
the same for all conjugations:
-a -amos
-as -ais
-a -an
B) -se
Take the third person plural form of the preterit (e.g., hablaron), drop the -ron from the
end, which gives you the stem (hablar-) for the imperfect subjunctive. The endings are
the same for all conjugations:
-se -semos
-ses -seis
-se -sen
Some books say that this form is only literary or even pedantic if used orally. In Spain
that is not the case (nor in many other Latin American countries), where speakers don’t
even realize they are using two different forms. You must learn both forms.
Since the imperfect subjunctive of all verbs is formed by dropping the –on from the third-
person plural preterit, the imperfect subjunctive will have exactly the same irregularities
as those verbs that are irregular in that preterit form.
Uses
The imperfect subjunctive is used in the same type of situations in which the present
subjunctive is used, except that the main verb is usually in the preterit, imperfect,
present perfect, conditional, conditional perfect, or one of the past subjunctives:
a) Noun clauses. Compare the following pairs of sentences and explain why the second
element of each pair needs an imperfect subjunctive instead of a present subjunctive:
Me alegra que seas tan simpática. It makes me happy that you are so nice.
Me alegró que fueras tan simpática. It maked me happy that you were so nice.
No hay nada aquí que me agrade. There's nothing here that pleases me.
No había nada allí que me gustara. There was nothing there that pleased me.
c) Adverbial clauses. The subjunctive is used when the action in the adverbial clause is
viewed as anticipated or hypothetical. Compare the following pairs of sentences:
Te llamo para que vengas. I’m calling you so that you come.
Te llamé para que vinieras. I called you so that you would come.
Apart from these uses, which are common to all the tenses of the subjunctive, the
imperfect subjunctive has 3 more uses that are exclusive to this tense:
Notice that these are all main clauses, not subordinate clauses. Instead of the imperfect
subjunctive, the conditional can be used, with no change in meaning:
