Course Description:
This is a three-unit lecture class whose aim is to introduce the student to chemistry-based
industries. Topics covered include mass balances in flow processes, separation processes, and
scale-up. Students are also provided with an overview of the manufacturing processes involved in
the preparation of fertilizers, petrochemicals, soaps/detergents, fats/oils, etc.
Whenever possible, Philippine-based chemical industries will be discussed.
Course Objectives:
At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
1. analyze processes by performing mass balance calculations
2. construct flow charts describing industrial chemical processes
3. Apply clear and logical analytical thinking skills in explaining industrial practices
4. Describe the preparation of commodity products e.g. agrochemicals, oils, fats, soaps and
detergents, sugar and other polysaccharides, pulp and paper, petrochemicals, etc.
5. Report on the effects of industries significant to the Philippine setting

Classroom Policies:
Attendance is required in all class lectures and examinations. Students may be allowed cuts up
to a maximum of 20 percent the number of semester hours, which is about 9 absences. While
the class roll may not be called regularly, your attendance will be under continuous scrutiny.
Attendance in examinations is mandatory and as a matter of practice, make-up examinations
are not given.
In keeping with the Mission Statement of Ateneo, academic, professional, and personal honesty
is imperative. The minimum penalty for dishonesty (e.g. cheating, plagiarism, etc) is a grade of
zero for the particular test/quiz/examination/problem set. Should there be evidence that a
particular case is continuous or consistent, the maximum penalty allowed by the University will
be pursued.
