A Retelling of John Chapter 4 / Uma releitura de Joo, captulo 4
Susannah sighed as
she draped her headcovering over her long
raven hair. Picking up an
empty clay urn, she set
out on the long, hot,
dusty walk to fetch
water from the
communal well near
Sychar, the Samaritan
village where she lived.
She approached the
well warily, because
there sat a strangera
Jew, judging by
appearance. She was
astonished when the
man asked her for a
drink of water, because
the Jews religious
customs forbade them
any interaction with the
Samaritans, whom they
considered unclean.
Susana suspirou
enquanto amarrava o
leno sobre o cabelo longo
e negro. Tomando um
cntaro de barro, comeou
a p o longo, quente e
poeirento caminho para
tirar gua do poo
comunitrio que ficava
perto de Sicar, a vila
samaritana em que vivia.
Aproximou-se do poo
um tanto desconfiada, pois
junto a ele estava sentado
um estranho que, pela
aparncia, ela concluiu ser
um judeu. A mulher
surpreendeu-se quando o
forasteiro lhe pediu gua,
pois os costumes religiosos
dos judeus proibiam a
estes a interao com
samaritanos,
considerados impuros.
Susannah was
astonished. Youre a
prophet, I see, she began.
You might be able to
settle a certain dispute
then. My people have
always worshiped on
Mount Gerizim, but you
Jews say that Jerusalem is
the only place to worship.
The fact that a Jewish
ruler had destroyed the
Samaritans temple on
their holy mountain 200
years earlier went
unspoken, but clearly it
was on her mind.
Believe me, the
stranger replied, the time
is coming when you wont
worship the Father either
on this mountain or in
Jerusalem. God is a Spirit,
and those who worship
God must worship Him in
spirit and truth.
She marveled at this
answer. God a Spirit
who she could worship
anywhere? Her race,
religion, gender,
background, age, could
Seus olhos se
arregalaram e seus
ensamentos dispararam.
Tenho de contar para meus
amigos e parentes! Espere
aqui que j volto!
Susana se apressou
para Sicar, esquecendo-se
do cntaro vazio perto
do poo. O calor do meiodia havia passado e as
pessoas circulavam nas
imediaes do mercado
quando ela chegou
alvoroada dizendo a
tantos quanto ela
conseguia sobre o homem
que encontrara e a
conversa que tiveram.
Ele s pode ser o Cristo!
exclamou.
Logo, Susana voltou ao
poo seguida por uma
pequena multido. O
homem ainda estava l,
dessa vez com mais vrios
outros, que lhe disseram
que o nome do forasteiro
era Jesus.
Um dos moradores
dali, que a notou quando
passava, disse: Voc
tentou nos convencer
que aquele homem,
Jesus, era o Messias.
Bem, agora acreditamos,
mas no s pelo que
voc nos disse, mas ns
prprios O escutamos e
temos a certeza de que
Ele o Salvador!
Susana sorriu e seguiu
seu caminho. No fora a
nica a encontrar a gua
viva!
In the city of
Capernaum in Israel,
there lived a Roman
centurion responsible
for a garrison of a
hundred soldiers. He and
his men had kept watch
on Jesus activities ever
since He began His work
in the city, for it was their
duty to ensure that the
Galilean was not doing or
saying anything to incite
a rebellion against Rome.
After hearing Jesus
preach, however, the
centurion had come to
respect Him, realizing
that the kingdom He
proclaimed was hardly
a threat to Rome, which
in spite of all its power
and greatness could
stand to benefit from
His teachings on love.
Na cidade de Cafernaum,
em Israel, vivia um
centurio romano
responsvel por uma
guarnio de cem soldados.
Ele e seus homens vigiavam
Jesus desde que Ele
comeara Sua obra na
cidade, pois estavam
incumbidos de garantir que
este homem da Galileia no
fazia nem dizia nada para
incitar uma revolta contra
Roma.
Mas, depois de ouvir
Jesus pregar, o centurio
comeou a respeit-lo,
percebendo que o reino
que Ele proclamava no era
uma ameaa para Roma. E
que esta, apesar de todo
seu poder e grandeza,
poderia se beneficiar dos
Seus ensinamentos sobre
amor.
Zacchaeus had
begun to realize that it
took much more than
wealth to bring true
satisfaction. After all,
he had everything
money could buy, but
something was missing.
Then one day Jesus
passed through Jericho.
When Zacchaeus heard
that He was in town, he
closed up his office, and
hurried off to see for
himself. A large crowd
with Jesus in their
midst, was already
moving slowly down
the road, but poor
Zacchaeus was so short
he couldnt see a thing.
Quickly he spotted a
large sycamore tree up
ahead of the crowd. As
Jesus passed by, maybe
he could see him from
that tree. Completely
forgetting about what
people would think of
him, Zacchaeus ran past
the crowd and scurried
up into the tree.
As Zacchaeus slid
down from the tree, it
was hard to believe that
there hadnt been some
sort of mistake. How
could Jesus have known
his name? But as soon as
he realized Jesus was
serious, he answered,
Why, this is an honor!
Please do come to my
house! Youre so very
welcome! And
Zacchaeus joyfully
escorted Jesus to his
home.
In that one moving
meeting with Jesus,
Zacchaeus had found the
answer! Now wealth and
possessions were not
important. Excitedly,
Zacchaeus declared,
Jesus, right here and
now I want You to know
that Ive made up my
mind! I am going to give
to the poor one half of
all that I own! And to
make amends for those
whom I have cheated or
taken advantage of, I

According to tradition
and the writings of
Clement of Alexandria (c.
150-215), Zacchaeus
became a companion of
the apostle Peter and in
time was appointed
bishop of Caesarea.
Segundo a tradio e
os escritos de Clemente
de Alexandria (c. 150215 d.C), Zaqueu se
tornou companheiro
do apstolo Pedro e,
tempos depois, foi
nomeado bispo de
Cesareia.

Elias tugged
thoughtfully at his beard
and frowned at his son. I
dont want you going off
to Jesus again. Hes a
trouble-maker.
Jeremias fidgeted. He
didnt really understand
why his father was so set
against the rabbi Jesus.
All the stories going
around their community
told of this teacher
performing acts of great
kindness. He healed the
sick. He provided food for
those who had followed
Him into the Judean hills
to listen through the day
and into the evening
hours. What could be
intolerable in a rabbi such
as this? The thoughts
remained unspoken.
Jeremiass head was
bowed subserviently.
Elias afagava
pensativamente sua barba.
Ele franziu as sobrancelhas
para o filho. No quero
que voc saia para ver a
Jesus, disse sobriamente.
Ele um encrenqueiro.
Jeremias se remexeu.
No entendia porque seu
pai estava to determinado
a se opor ao rabi Jesus.
Todas as histrias que se
ouviam na comunidade,
relatavam que este mestre
fazia atos de bondade.
Curava os doentes, supria
comida para os que O
tinham seguido para os
montes da Judia para
escut-lo de manh
noite. O que poderia haver
de intolervel num rabi
assim? Seus pensamentos
ficaram sem resposta.
Jeremias curvou a cabea
em submisso.

das extremidades do
campo, debaixo da sombra
de uma rvore,
encontrava-se um grupo
de jovens, comendo com
apetite espigas enquanto
falavam. Pararam de falar
quando os fariseus, com
suas tnicas negras, se
aproximaram. As educadas
saudaes foram
interrompidas por Elias.
Vejam s, exclamou
ele. Eles esto comendo
gro! Gro colhido no
Sbado! Virou-se irado
para o seu lder. No sabe
que isso contra a lei que
Moiss nos deu? Por que
eles esto infringindo o
Sbado e colhendo gro?
Os homens que estavam
ali diante de Jesus,
valorizavam a letra da lei,
no o seu esprito. Ele
respondeu com a calma de
costume, O Sbado foi
feito por causa do homem,
no o homem por causa do
Sbado.
Jeremias tambm
conseguiu se aproximar.
Ele queria ouvir Jesus falar
de novo, como ouvira no
monte alguns meses antes.
Queria entender porque os
ensinamentos de Jesus
eram diferentes, e porque
seu pai se opunha a ele
com tanta veemncia.
Jesus falou de novo,
desta vez diretamente para
os fariseus. lcito no
Sbado fazer bem ou fazer
mal? Salvar ou matar?
Havia indignao em Sua
voz. Podia ver que os
coraes deles estavam
endurecidos. Eles se
importavam mais com os
dias da semana do que
com os necessitados.
Elias ficou calado. Os
outros ancies tambm
ficaram quietos, esperando
para ver o que viria a
seguir. Jeremias prendeu a
respirao. Dava para
sentir a tenso reinante.
stretched. He stared at
his hands, and then he
looked at Jesus. Words
could not express his
thanks. Jesus smiled, and
stepped back, as the
crowd was now pressing
forward to see Amoz
closer.
Jeremias peered over
the heads of the throng
to get a better view.
Exclamations of
astonishment could be
heard throughout the
congregation. His father
had stormed out in a
silent rage. The Sabbath
had been defiled, again!
Jesus and His
followers had withdrawn
from the synagogue.
Jeremias also made his
way outside. One of the
followers of Jesus was
standing quietly by the
well, drinking water. This
was a youth of about his
ageyounger than the
others. Jeremias
approached him.
quilmetros pelos
campos. No queria que
seu pai soubesse onde
estivera.
Elias apareceu de um
pulo quando o filho
entrou no cmodo.
Olhou para ele
atentamente, como se
isso fosse revelar onde o
filho havia estado.
Ento, o que voc
tem a dizer? inquiriu
zangado.
Jeremias adotou a
postura humilde de um
filho obediente. Mais
uma vez baixou a cabea
como se estivesse
envergonhado da
repreenso do pai. De
forma alguma, o que ele
queria fazer era deixar
tudo para trs e seguiria
o Grande Mestre. Ele
tambm ajudaria os
pobres, alimentaria os
famintos, levantaria os
fardos dos oprimidos, e
no importaria mais se
isso fosse feito no Sbado
ou em qualquer outro
dia da semana.
Misericrdia mais
importante do que a
observncia sacrificada
dos antigos rituais e
costumes. Os grandes
mandamentos, que tinha
aprendido com Jesus,
eram amar a Deus e
amar o prximo. O amor
o esprito da lei, e o
amor que estava
aprendendo com o
Mestre duraria hoje e
para sempre!

Testemunha Ocular
Based on Matthew 26:36-46; 27:1-38; John 18:1-12 / Baseado em Mateus 26: 36-46; 27:
1-38; Joo 18: 1-12.
As ltimas 24 horas
foram perturbadoras,
aterrorizantes,
maravilhosas. Tudo
comeou com uma
ordem de Caifs, o sumo
sacerdote, fantoche de
Roma e meu patro.
Malco, faa isto! Malco,
faa aquilo! E eu, claro,
tenho de obedecer. Sou
fantoche de outro
fantoche, e estou aqui
para fazer seu trabalho
sujo. E aquele foi o mais
sujo que j me mandaram
fazer.
Minhas ordens eram
transmitir para o capito
do templo as instrues e
acompanh-lo e os seus
homens a capturar Jesus e
O levar para o tribunal. J
fizramos isso antes com
mestres picaretas, mas
but my blood-soaked
robe and skin were
proof that something
amazing had happened.
How could the others
have dismissed that
miracle so quickly? How
could they have been so
callous?
Back home, as I
washed the caked blood
from my face and arms
and changed clothes, I
couldn't shake the
thought that I had just
been an accomplice to a
horrendous crime.
I ran to the High
Priest's palace to see
what would happen to
Jesus, and found the
place filled with people.
"Where is He?" I asked
one of the guards.
"The trial has begun.
Caiaphas is already
convinced that this Jesus
fellow is guilty of
blasphemy. He will pass
judgment quickly. Jesus
doesn't have a chance,"
the guard answered.
I kept feeling my
ear. There was no pain,
no damage. I ran my
fingers over the spot,
but couldn't even feel
a scar. How could that
be?
Then that thought
came back, even
stronger than before.
I'm responsible for
this! I felt like I was the
one on trial. He healed
me. He showed me
love and mercy. Now
He is surrounded by
wolves crying for His
blood. What have I
done?
I followed as Jesus
was taken to stand trial
before Pontius Pilate,
the Roman governor.
Jesus' accusers were a
bit like we were in the
gardennearly
bowled over every
time He spoke. They
knew Jesus was no
ordinary man.
Eu apalpava minha
orelha. No sentia dor nem
havia nenhum ferimento.
Procurei com os dedos, mas
no encontrei ao menos
uma cicatriz. Como pode
ter acontecido?
Ento o pensamento
voltou a mim, ainda mais
intenso: Sou responsvel
por isso! Senti como se
estivesse sendo julgado.
Ele me curou. Mostrou-me
amor e misericrdia. Agora
est cercado de lobos
sedentos pelo Seu sangue.
O que fiz?
Acompanhei aqueles
que levaram Jesus para ser
julgado por Pncio Pilatos,
o governador romano. Seus
acusadores sentiram um
pouco do mesmo que
havamos sentido no
jardim, quando O
prendemos: ficaram
praticamente imveis
quando Ele falava. Sabiam
que Jesus no era qualquer
um.
No considero que
Ele tenha cometido crime
algum, declarou Pilatos
aps interrog-lO. Mas ao
ver que a multido havia
sido incitada pelos
sacerdotes a exigir a
execuo de Jesus e que
Jerusalm estava na
iminncia de uma revolta,
pediu uma bacia de gua
e lavou as mos dizendo:
Estou inocente do sangue
deste justo. Se querem
crucific-lO, faam-no
vocs mesmos!
Ento Pilatos entregou
Jesus para ser crucificado
e toda uma guarnio de
soldados romanos O
cercaram. Vestiram-nO
com um manto vermelho,
puseram-Lhe uma coroa
de espinhos, cuspiram-Lhe
no rosto e diziam
zombando: Salve, rei
dos judeus! Em seguida,
vestiram-nO de novo com
Suas roupas e O levaram
para ser executado.
In my mind I traveled
back several months, to
when I had heard Him
tell a crowd, "I have
come to seek and save
the lost. Even though I
was sure He wouldn't
be able to hear me over
the noise of the crowd
that had gathered to
watch Him die, I told
Him, "I am lost, Jesus.
Forgive me for what I
did!
Then He looked
straight at me with the
same love in His eyes
that I had seen in the
garden. I knew I was
forgiven. It had been a
miracle when He healed
my ear, but an even
greater miracle when
He healed my heart.
Now I know what I
must do. I must find
some way to serve my
new Master out of love
and gratitude.
Meus pensamentos me
levaram no tempo, para
muitos meses atrs, quando
O ouvi dizer para uma
multido Vim para buscar
e salvar os perdidos.
Mesmo tendo certeza que
Ele no poderia me ouvir
em meio de todo o barulho
da multido que se reunira
para v-lO morrer, eu Lhe
disse: Estou perdido, Jesus.
Perdoe-me pelo que fiz!
Ento, olhou
diretamente para mim, com
o mesmo olhar que vi no
jardim. Eu sabia que estava
perdoado. A cura da minha
orelha havia sido um
milagre, mas nesse
momento, Ele fez outro,
ainda maior, ao curar o meu
corao.
Agora sei o que devo
fazer. Devo encontrar uma
maneira de servir meu novo
Mestre por amor e gratido.
