AN ACT
to prohibit the scarifice of animals and birds in or in the precincts sf Hindu temples in the Union territory of
Pondicherry.

WHERE.4S it is expedient t o prohibit the sacrifice of

animals and ljipds in or in the precincts of Hinds temples in
the Union territclry of Poncijcherry.
BE it enacted by the Legislative Assembly in the Sixteenth
I-ear of the Republic of India as follows :1. Short title, extent and commencemert.-(1) This Act m r y
be called the Pondicherry Aniinals and Birds Sacrifices Prohibition Act, 1935.
(2) It extends to the whole of
Pondicherry.

2. De6niGons.-In
this Act, unless there is anything
t,epugnant in the subject or context(i) "precincts" in relation to a temple, includes all lands
and buildings near a t6&ple, whether belonging to the temples
or not, which are ordinarily used for purposes connected wi h
the xvorshi!; whether conduc';ed inside the temple or outsi.1.c:
:<nd in particular the mandapams, pralzarams, back-yards oI'
the temple by whatever name called, and also the ground ciI
which the temple car ordinarily stands ;

(ii) "sacrifice" means tho killing or maiming of any animal

or bird for the purpose or with the intention, of propitiating
sny deity ;
(iii) "'emule" means a place by whatever designation
';ROW, used c s a place of public religious worship, and dedicated to, or for the benefit of or used as of right by, the 'Hindu
Community or any section thereof, as a place of public relizinus worship.
3. Sacrifice in teapre or its preoincts prohibited.-No

5. Templd or its precincts not to be allowed to be used for

sacrifice.-No person shall knowingly allow any sacrifice to be
performed at any place whichF

(a) is situated within any temple or its precincts ; and

(b) is in his possession or under his control.

6. Pena1t:es.-(1) Whoever contravenes the provisions of

secion 3 shall be punished with fine which may extend to three

hundred rupees.
