I was home last week to clean out my mothers house and all the thoughts and feelings about my
own childhood came up. Im sure that my mothers own issues with domestic violence played a part in
my subsequent physical and sexual abuse and further. I know Im not the only one. I hope this will eventually
become the norm for how domestic violence, child abuse and sexual assault are treated.

OUR MISSION:
To lead in ending sexual assault and exploitation, child abuse and domestic
violence through prevention, intervention and advocacy for change.

OUR VISION:
A just and safe community free from violence and abuse.

DESCRIPTION:
The SAFE Alliance (SAFE) was created in January 2013 when founding partners
Austin Childrens Shelter and SafePlace came together in a more structured
alliance to address the epidemic of violence in our homes and communities. These
two highly-respected and longstanding agencies joined forces upon recognizing
that we must break down the silos historically separating child abuse, domestic
violence and sexual assault services: all issues that had evolved separately as
concerns in the public arena. Although they are typically addressed through
different governmental systems including funding and regulationsthese
issues often existed simultaneously, or sequentially, in the lives of the people we
serve. Through The SAFE Alliance, these two agencies are able to provide more
comprehensive services to survivors of family trauma and abuse, help advocate for
improved response systems on behalf of the thousands in our community whose
lives are touched by violence in the home, and chart a new path forward for victim
service agencies.

OUR PROGRAMS:

The SAFE Alliance provides a community continuum focused on prevention,

intervention, healing, advocacy and education around the issues of child abuse and
neglect, domestic and family violence, rape/sexual assault and sexual exploitation.
Through these comprehensive and focused efforts, SAFE is working toward social
change; creating a world that has no need of an emergency shelter for those hurt
by abuse, neglect and violence. Programs include:
Prevention and Community Based Programs The SAFE Alliance and our founding
partners provide an array of abuse prevention services and programs, including:
Expect Respect: A teen dating violence prevention program that works throughout several school
districts to provide counseling and educational programs for youth and their allies in order to prevent
dating violence, sexual assault/abuse, domestic violence and bullying.
Strong Start: A voluntary family program that combines therapeutic early childhood classroom
instruction, parent education and coaching, mental health services, and other much-needed support to
help strengthen families and reduce the risk of child abuse/neglect.

disabilities, their families and caregivers. Professionals working in the sexual assault, domestic violence,

in the deaf community.

Services campus, provides child care, support and parenting coaching for community families (at full
rates) and at-risk families (through subsidized programs.)

relationships.

facility on the SafePlace campus. (Trained advocates also may stay with survivors throughout the physical
and forensic process when administered in area hospitals.)
Legal Advocacy and Accompaniment: Staff and volunteers provide victims support in the courts, while
licensed attorneys answer legal questions, provide training on relevant legal issues, and collaborate with
legal service providers to increase pro-bono legal resources for clients.
Community Education: Presentations and training on the issues of sexual harassment, sexual assault or
