KIDS OF SUMMER .................

Jambalaya
Festival 2015

Congratulations Jambalaya
Association, you have done it
again. This years 48th Annual
Festival was a huge success.
I have been attending the
Jambalaya Festival for 40 plus
years and this years festival
seemed to have it all. The food,

the events, and the entertainment makes this event one of

the most diversified festivals
around.
Its been a long time coming
for the festival to build up to
the excitement that once was
held in the streets of downtown
Gonzales. This year, I believe,
proved to me that the festival is
back and is bigger and better
4

than ever.
A wide variety of entertainment from bands like Hai
Karate, Eddie Smith
and Chee Weez rocked
the stage while hometown
favorite bands such as
Van & Grace Broussard,
Kenny Fife and Na Na Sha
kept our dancing shoes moving.
The addition of bringing in

the Nashville Country Star

Chris Cagle brought record

to Lee Elisar and his helper and

brother Kirk. The real exciting

crowds. Matter-of-fact the

crowds all weekend were huge.

part of the victory is that this

was Lees second year to cook

It was exciting this year

addition, this was his brother

in. Lee is 23 and Kirk is 20

festival looks bright with
upcoming guys like this. The

What is a

One of the first steps in cutting a
rough diamond involves polishing a
small flat section or window so that
the cutter can microscopically examine
the gems interior. This helps the

These are diamonds and colored

positive. Id say 80% or more of
people that had derm needling had a
positive experience.
I called a local medi spa to set up,
minimally, a consultation, but the
expense was $570! No way was I
doing that, so I did more research,
and I found that derm rollers were for
sale. So, I bought one. I bought the
Lilian Fache derma roller shown here.
With apprehension and excitement
I proceeded with my first personal
session of derm rolling from home.
Let me interject quickly derm
needling is effective because after
aerating your epidermis, its allows
a topical treatment to become way
more effective that just applying

With this being said, after my first

Can a Fruit Help

with Sugar
Cravings?
The herbal supplement Garcinia
Cambogia has been featured on
Dr. Oz, talk shows and numerous
other media outlets. Its a natural
supplement derived from the
Indonesian fruit, Tamarind. There is
a natural compound in Garcinia called
HCA, Hydroxycitric Acid, thats said
to boast metabolism, increase energy
levels, decrease sugar cravings and
even give you better sleep.
Starlets like Jennifer Aniston and
Jennifer Lopez are rumored to have
tried this supplement and have done
so with success, so a month ago I
decided to try my first bottle.
After doing loads of research, I read
that the highest percentage of HCA
you can get in this supplement is 80%,
so I decided to order a bottle
(shown below) that had the highest

some research. Why am I just

learning about this procedure? People
have been doing this treatment for
years. Dermal needling is also called
derm rolling and percutaneous collagen induction. Its basically the use of
needles via a roller mechanism to
puncture the skin in order to induce
tiny areas of trauma to the skin and
thus stimulating collagen production.
The needles only go down into the
upper dermis, so you really dont
notice much trauma, except a little
redness.

percentage of HCA.
The directions state to take a pill
about an hour before each meal, and
preferably before lunch and dinner.
Thats exactly what I did. I took this
supplement faithfully, and about a
week or two into the bottle, I noticed
I was fuller more quickly during
meals, and I could go longer in
between meals. A couple of weeks
into the bottle, I noticed I was
sleeping much more soundly. I
eventually increased to one to two
pills before meals and that seems to
work even better. I didnt notice any
negative side effects of the
supplement, which is nice.
Long story short, I lost about five
pounds that I gained earlier in the
spring. I feel good, and I feel like my
sugar cravings are almost nonexistent.
Its quite amazing, I actually only
crave fresh, healthy foods. I feel so
good that I just ordered another bottle of this supplement. I give Garcinia
Cambogia a 4.5/5 stars!

My skin was slightly red and felt tingly

I recently visited dermatologist,

Dr. Terezakis, inventor of beloved

proceeding with caution around my
nose and mouth areas.

There are two types of treatment that

one can proceed with derm needling:
One mild to moderate session up to
5 times a week or one aggressive
treatment every 1 to 2 months.
I am currently going to go for the less
aggressive method, since it will only
take a few more minutes to my
nightly regimen. I will keep you
posted on the progress of my derm
needling endeavors. This is very
exciting!

The Voice
Recently I watched a Sheriff's
Department patrol vessel cruising
slowly alongside the riverbank near
my home as they searched for the
body of a missing boater. An hour
or two later they were followed by
an older boat, its ancient,
smoking Evinrude puttering
along. Its somber crew spoke
little as they scanned both right
and left, peering beneath decks
and piers. Undoubtedly they were
friends or relatives of the missing,
having joined the search.
The boater reportedly went down
in a 12 foot bateau powered by a
6 HP outboard on Bayou
Manchac. He and his passenger
wore no life jackets. The sun had
set on a day in which we
experienced some of the worst
storms ever to sweep cross our
river. His passenger bailed out
and was able to swim ashore as the
boat was swamped. It was
recovered a couple of days later
and miles downstream. The search
for the body continues.
Social media postings now allow
us a glimpse into the lives of the
names we read in the news and a
brief search of the internet
produced a photo of the missing
young man straddling a Harley
Davidson. He held a beer in one
hand and the slightest of smiles on
his face. His Facebook profile
picture had been posted one day

He made a last Facebook post. He

listened to his favorite song. He
drank a last beer. He hugged
someone he loved. He smoked a
last cigarette. At some point, he
cracked his last joke and perhaps
when he laughed it was his last
laugh. He gazed at an overcast sky
and felt the cool, wet air blowing
against his face. Maybe as he sank
beneath the water, he said a last
prayer. And at a most unexpected
time, he drew his last breath.
Where does that voice come from
in a young persons head? The one
which convincingly speaks
ridiculous thoughts such as
Nothing bad can happen. Or
You are young and now is the
time to make the stories you will
retell from your rocking chair!
Or maybe it just shouts Tell em
to hold your beer and watch this!
Whatever it says, it too often
drowns out the voice of common
sense and rationality.
Surely most of us remember that
voice. It must spring from some
slowly developing gray matter
deep within our youthful brain,
the same part that
tells a toddler to touch fire or a six
year old to chase balls into busy
intersections. Most are lucky
enough to experience it's fading to
a distant murmur as we mature,
hastened by mortgages and babies
of our own. But that damn voice
is the very reason so many young
people die needless deaths.
Though hearing that voice is a
part of the human experience,
nature itself gives no credence to
its words. Nor does nature forgive
those who do.

Wisdom Teeth

How Serious is an
Impacted Tooth?

By Calvin Bessonet, DDS,FAGD

Wisdom teeth, also known as

third molars, are the last teeth to
erupt in your mouth. This generally occurs between the ages of 17
and 25, a time of life that has been
called the "Age of Wisdom."
Anthropologists note that the
rough diet of early humans resulted in the excessive wear of their
teeth. Normal drifting of the teeth
to compensate for this wear
ensured that space was available
for most wisdom teeth to erupt by
adolescence. The modern diet,
which is much softer, and the popularity of orthodontic tooth
straightening procedures produce
a fuller dental arch, which quite
commonly doesn't leave room for
the wisdom teeth to erupt, thereby
setting the stage for problems
when the final four molars enter
the mouth.

What is an Impacted Tooth?

Complications such as infection,
damage to adjacent teeth and the
formation of cysts may arise from
impacted teeth.
A tooth becomes impacted
when there is a lack of space in the
dental arch and its growth and
eruption are prevented by
overlying gum, bone or
another tooth.

Impacted teeth can be painful

and lead to infection.They may
also crowd or damage adjacent
teeth or roots.
More serious problems may
occur if the sac surrounding the
impacted tooth becomes filled
with fluid and enlarges to form a
cyst. As the cyst grows it may
hollow out the jaw and
permanently damage adjacent
teeth, the surrounding bone and
nerves. Rarely, if a cyst is not
treated, a tumor may develop
from its walls and a more serious
surgical procedure may be
required to remove it.
Despite the considerable
concern regarding impacted third
molars, a recent study finds that
third molars which have broken
through the tissue and erupted
into the mouth in a normal,
upright position may be as prone
to disease as those third molars
that remain impacted.

Must the Tooth Come Out

if it Hasn't Caused Any
Problems Yet?
Not all problems related to third
molars are painful or
visible. Damage can occur without
your being aware of it.
As wisdom teeth grow, their
roots become longer, the teeth
become more difficult to remove
and complications become more

likely. In addition, impacted

wisdom teeth are more likely to
cause problems as patients age.
No one can predict when third
molar complications will occur,
but when they do, the
circumstances can be much more
painful and the teeth more
difficult to treat.

When Should I Have My

Wisdom Teeth Removed?
Wisdom teeth are easier to
remove when the patient is
younger, since their roots are
not completely formed, the
surrounding bone is softer, and
there is less chance of damaging
nearby nerves or other structures.
Removal of wisdom teeth at a later
age becomes more complicated as
the roots have fully developed
(may involve
the nerve), and the jawbone
is denser.
It isn't wise to wait until your
wisdom teeth start to bother you.
In general, earlier removal of
wisdom teeth results in a less
complicated healing process.
The AAOMS study strongly
recommends that wisdom teeth be
removed by the time the patient is
a young adult in order to prevent
future problems and to ensure
optimal healing.The researchers
found that older patients may be
at greater risk for disease,
including periodontitis, in the
tissues surrounding the third

molars and adjacent teeth.

Periodontal infections, such as
those observed in this study, may
affect your general health.

What Happens During

Surgery?
Before surgery, your dentist
will discuss with you what to
expect. This is a good time to
ask questions or express your
concerns. It is especially important
to let the doctor know about any
illness you have and medications
you are taking.
The relative ease with which a
wisdom tooth may be removed
depends on several conditions,
including the position of the tooth
and root development. Most
wisdom tooth extractions are
performed in the office under local
anesthesia, oral or intravenous
sedation. Your dentist will
discuss the anesthetic option t
hat is right for you.

What Happens after Surgery?

Following surgery, you may
experience some swelling and mild
discomfort, which are part of the
normal healing process. Cold
compresses may help decrease the
swelling, and medication
prescribed by your dentist can help
manage the discomfort. You may
be instructed to modify your diet
following surgery and later
progress to more normal foods.

Social Security benefits.

Social Security
Benefits
the Basics
While many have delayed retirement because of the recent recession, for those close to retirement
age or contemplating retirement,
a basic understanding of Social
Security is imperative. There are
many different things that you
need to understand about Social
Security to help you make an
informed decision. While a discussion of everything relating to
Social Security is beyond the
scope of this article, you should
be familiar with the following
broad concepts before you make a
decision to start receiving your

Social Security benefits are available for those who have contributed to the Social Security system for at least 10 years or 40
quarters. This is most Americans
except those who have never
worked or who worked for a government entity that does not participate in Social Security. As
such, Social Security benefits make
up at least a part of most peoples
retirement income; for some,
these benefits may make up a
large part of their retirement
income or even all of their retirement income. Therefore, timing
your decision as to when you will
start receiving the benefits to
maximize your monthly amount is
critical.
If you wait until your full retirement age (FRA) to receive benefits, you will receive 100% of your
benefits. Full retirement age
varies depending on when you
were born. If you were born
between 1943 and 1954, your
FRA is 66. If you were born
between 1955 and 1960, your full
retirement age is between the ages
of 66 and 67. The FRA depends
on the year you were born. For
example, if you were born in
1958, your FRA is 66 years and 8

months. If you were born in

1960 or later, your FRA is 67.
An average of your top 35 wage
earning years will be used to calculate your primary insurance
amount (PIA). If you have less
than 35 years of employment at
retirement, zero is used for each
year in which there are no earnings. You can increase the
amount of your benefit by waiting
until after your FRA to start
receiving benefits. For each year
after your FRA that you delay taking your Social Security benefits
you will receive an 8% increase in
your PIA. If your full retirement
age is 66 and you wait until 70 to
start receiving benefits, you will
receive a whopping 32% more in
your monthly benefit and this
amount will last for your lifetime.
As you can see, delaying the benefit may make sense if you expect
to live a long life.
Conversely, if you take your benefits before you reach your FRA,
you will have to take a reduction
in your PIA. The earliest you can
start receiving benefits is 62 years
of age. Should you decide to take
your benefits at 62 and your FRA
is 66, you can expect a monthly
reduction of 25%. Again, this
reduced amount will be for your
lifetime.

amount as of the date of death. If

the survivor has not yet reached
FRA, she can start taking survivor
benefits at a reduced amount at
age 60. Then, at age 70, the survivor can start taking her own
benefits and will receive a greater
amount each month since she
delayed drawing on her own
record at FRA. Another option
allows a survivor who has a low
benefit to start receiving their own
reduced benefit at 62 and then to
switch to their deceased spouses
higher benefit at FRA.

As you can see, the timing of

when to take your Social Security
benefits can be complex and it can
affect not only you but also your
surviving spouse. Next month,
we will discuss some additional
strategies to maximize your benefits. Until then, make sure you
always consult with someone wellversed in Social Security benefits
before you make an election that
could last a lifetime.

Cool Sculpting Q & A

What is
CoolSculpting?
The CoolSculpting technology
safely delivers precisely
controlled cooling to gently
and effectively target the fat cells
underneath the skin. The
treated fat cells are crystallized
(frozen), then die. Over time,
your body naturally processes
the fat and eliminates these dead
cells, leaving a more sculpted
you. After you and your
physician select the area(s) to be
treated, the device is positioned
on your body and controlled
cooling is applied. During your
procedure, feel free to read,
check email, or even take a nap.

Who is a good
candidate for
CoolSculpting?
The CoolSculpting fat reduction
procedure is specially designed
for those who have unwanted
fat that resists diet and exercise.
Unlike gastric bypass surgery,
the CoolSculpting procedure is
not a weight loss solution for
people who are obese. It is,
however, a non-surgical
alternative to liposuction.
Good candidates have
noticeable bulges in certain
areas theyd like to get rid of.
Request a one-on-one
consultation with a
CoolSculpting physician who
will determine if the
CoolSculpting procedure is
right for you.

Is CoolSculpting
safe?
The CoolSculpting procedure is
FDA-cleared for the flank (love
handles), abdomen and thigh.
With over one million

CoolSculpting procedures
worldwide, it is proven to be a
safe and effective treatment for
non-surgical fat reduction.

Are there any

side effects from
CoolSculpting?
During the procedure you
may experience deep pulling,
tugging, pinching, numbness or
discomfort. Following the
procedure, typical side effects
include temporary numbness,
redness, swelling, bruising,
firmness, tingling, stinging
and pain. The CoolSculpting
procedure is completely
non-surgical, so typically you
can return to normal
activities immediately.

When will I see

results from
CoolSculpting?
You may start to see changes as
quickly as three weeks after your
treatment, and will experience
the most dramatic results after
two months. But your body will
continues doing so for up
to four to six months after
treatment.

Where does the

fat go?
Are results
permanent?
Once the treated fat cells are
crystallized (frozen), they die
and are naturally processed and
eliminated from the body. Once
the treated fat cells are gone,
theyre gone for good.

St. Elizabeth
Hospital
Emergency Nurses
Participate in
Day on the Hill
GONZALES, LA (May 4,
2015) Tammy OConnor,
BSN, CEN, President-Elect of
the Louisiana Emergency
Nurses Association (LENA),
and Jennifer Sing, BSN, both
team members of St. Elizabeth
Hospitals Emergency
Department recently visited
Washington D.C. as representatives of LENA. The National
Emergency Nurses Association
(ENA) Day on the Hill was
held on April 28 and 29, 2015.
Over 100 ED nurses from
across the nation were present
with a unified voice for a
common change. The
individual state delegates were
advised to meet with their State
Senators and/or House
Representatives to lobby for
support with the Mental Health
Reform Legislation and Trauma
Care Systems. Delegates
received a day of training in
preparation on how to present
various bills, and instruction on
optimizing time with state
representatives.
According to OConnor, the
comprehensive Mental Health
Reform Legislation will help to
ensure resources are available
for the mentally ill. The bill
specifically focuses on programs
and resources for psychiatric
care of patients and families
most in need of services. It
provides additional funding for

inpatient and outpatient

treatment by eliminating
restrictive reimbursement
through Medicaid.
We are thrilled to have had the
opportunity to meet with
Senator Bill Cassidys Senior
Public Health Advisor, Brenda
Destro, said OConnor.
In addition to Mental Health
support, ENA strongly
advocates support for the
nations Trauma and Emergency
Care Programs. Pending
legislative action, H.R. 648,
authorizes two trauma center
grant programs to support state
and rural development of
trauma systems. Another, H.R.
647, supports developing
trauma care regionalization to
ensure better access. We were
also fortunate to have met with
Senator David Vitter who
supports this legislation for
Trauma Care funding and
availability, said Sing.
This was a great experience for
both Jennifer and myself, and
we look forward to continuing
involvement in governmental
relations. We encourage other
nurses to get involved and be a
voice for their practice, their
peers, and their patients,
noted OConnor.

EATEL Awards
Six Local
Students
with Laptop
Computers
Six outstanding scholars from our local high
schools were honored on April 22, 2015 at
EATELs annual Technology Awards Ceremony,
now in its 29th year. Focusing on the
importance of both technology and academic
success, EATEL presented one outstanding
graduating senior from each high school in its
serving area, Donaldsonville, Dutchtown, East
Ascension, French Settlement, Maurepas and
St. Amant, with a touch-screen, ultra-portable
laptop computer. The ceremony was held in
the lobby of EATELs Administration Building
(406 E. Worthey Road, Gonzales, LA).
EATEL Technology Award applicants must have
an overall grade point average of 3.0 or
higher, actively participate in school and
community activities, and plan to pursue their
studies at a Louisiana-accredited college or
university. These students must also plan to
pursue a major in one of the STEM categories:
science, technology, engineering, or math. The
2015 recipients were chosen from a pool of
applicants by a counselor from each school.
My hope for these students is that theyll
continue to persevere in their academic success
as they seek their undergraduate degrees,
said Ashley Phillips, EATEL Executive Vice
President, Infrastructure. I hope that when
they graduate, our Louisiana economy will
provide them with great jobs, so that they can
raise their families here and continue to be an
integral part of our thriving community.
Its such an affirmation of our community, of
the work that we do in our school system,
when we see these top-notch students who
have profited so much from their opportunities
and have accomplished so many things, at
such a young age, and who are so well-poised
and launched for the next phase of their lives,
said Dr. Patrice Pujol, Ed.D., Superintendent of
Ascension Parish Public Schools. I have no
doubt that these will be amazing leaders in our
community one day. Id like to say a heartfelt

Over the years the number of

hunters has declined in general.
The days of picking up your shotgun and entering a patch of woods
near your home to pursue whatever
game you desire for an evening
meal is, for the most part a thing of
the past. Most hunters who fit the
description "occasional" hunter
have dropped from the ranks of
buying a license and have retired
their old shotgun or rifle forever. I
personally know some folks that fill
that bill and often talk to others
that join the rank of used to be
hunter. Our state does offer thousands of acres of public land available for all types of hunting.
Although these lands are well managed for game and waterfowl, an
individual would have to be a pretty serious hunter to go through the
effort it takes to use these ares.
Some hunters accept the challenges
of public land use, others with the
die hard hunter blood belong to
hunting clubs. I now belong to two
hunting clubs and also hunt a couple of Federal refuges.
I was only five or six years old
when my dad joined the Romeville
Hunting Club. At that time the
cost was approximately $10.00 a
year for a membership. Years passed
by and for whatever reasons, dad
moved on from the Romeville club.
During those years hunting land in
our area for squirrels, doves, ducks,
rabbits, quail and woodcock was
easy to find. At some point in time,
because of development or leasing
of land, these favorite hunting pots
of mine began to disappear. I
fought the situation for several
years and finally came to the realization that I had nowhere to hunt
anymore. That's when I joined
Mullins Swamp Hunting Club in
St. Helena parish. The cost at that
time was $250.00 a year. The dues
are now $950.00 a year membership. I've been a member there for
approximately thirty years now.
My dad, Thompson Brown and
I had already acquired our own
duck lease at Venice,LA before my
venture into the St. Helena club.
The cost of that lease at the time
was only $300.00 per year and that
was not per person, that was the
total amount. It's not like that any-

more at this day and time.

Through the years from then to
now I've probably belonged to
seven or eight different hunting
clubs. I've belonged to two or
more in the same year. One particular hunting club in Fordoche cost
$1500.00 when I first joined. I'm
no longer a member of that group
but I do know that yearly dues
there are well over $2000.00 at the
present time.
The forming of hunting clubs
has been good in many ways, but it
also had some negative affects in
other ways. One thing for sure, it
has stopped many minimal hunters
from buying a license and promoting the future of hunting. That's
not good. Is it worth the price?
Yes. To me it is. But understand
that I'm a serious hunter. Not
everyone falls into that category
and I fully understand that. Every
time I pull the trigger on a St.
Helena gobbler it's money well
spent. Each morning I have the
opportunity to make a squirrel
hunt at Lake Ridge Hunting Club
is a pleasure and worth every cent.
To enjoy a cold, clear winter morning hunting deer with my daughter
is priceless. One thing is for sure,
hunting leases are here to stay.
Another thing you can bet your
check on is the fact that the price
to belong to one will only rise in
the future. It may even get to the
point that middle class people such
as myself can't afford to belong to
one. Now that's not a good thing
for the future of hunting...

Work Plenty Overtime,
Club Dues Are Coming!

And what is so rare as a
day in June, Then if ever, come
perfect days
James Russell Lowell
A perfect summer day
is when the sun is shining, the
breeze is blowing, the birds are
singing and the lawn mower is
broken.
James Dent
Man, I have to agree with
both Jameses-June can be a
very nice month before the
summer heat really begins to
bear down. I mean, if you can
overlook the third of June
when Billy Joe McAllister
jumped off the Tallahatchie
Bridge, you have Flag Day
(June 14), Fathers Day (June
21) and Gen. George Custers
opening of his final ice cream
shop-Custers Last Stand (June
25).
But its also a time for me to
use the lengthening days to
answer the plethora of e-mails
(3) that has piled up since my
last column. So without
Freddie Adu, lets get to letter
number one
Hey, Blackcat Bill,
Not even your famous jinx
could keep American Pharoah
from the Triple Crown. How
do you think he compares to
Secretariat, Affirmed, Seattle
Slew and some of the other
winners? Andy Capper.
Dear Andy,
Boy, if ever there was an
industry that need a shot in the
arm, its horse racing.
American Pharoah-the misspelling was never corrected
when his name was approved- is
a superstar in the making that
just might draw even the
younger X-box generation back
to the track.
Pharoah has a bit of
everyman in him that should
appeal to the masses. He is not
as big as the majestic
Secretariat. He never had a
rival like the hard luck Alydar
(the only horse to come in
second in all three Triple
Crown races) to push him to
the absolute limit of his ability
like Affirmed. And hes not as
pretty as Seattle Slew due to an
unsightly short tail that was

chewed off by a jealous cohort

when he was a 2-year old. He
also has to wear ear plugs to
keep him relaxed in front of
big crowds.
But can he run. Sure his
time in the Belmont was a full
two seconds slower than the
freakish Secretariat, but as they
say at the track-The only ones
worried about time are those
who are doing it in prison.
And his cardiac cavity may
not be equal to Big Reds in
physical size (An autopsy
revealed Secretariats heart was
twice the size of a normal
thoroughbred.) but he has
shown the heart and soul of a
champion who can come from
behind to win the Kentucky
Derby, survive a post time
thunderstorm which sent Firing
Line among others to their
knees in the Preakness and
come back to go wire-to-wire

against fresh horses in the

grueling one and one-half
mile Belmont.
And the good news is his
owner Ahmed Zayat-no, hes
not Ahmeds a Yat from New
Orleans who used to call Buddy
D.s football show-is going to
run him several more times this
year before Pharoah retires to
stud-at about $100,000 a pop.
Then maybe his offsprings
will perform as well as
Secretariats most famous son
Risen Star-who was New
Orleans based-and would have
won his own Triple Crown if
not for drawing the dreaded
number one post position in
the Derby (He went on to win
the Preakness and Belmont by a
combined 16 lengths.).
And well have Triple Crown
winners more often than every
37 years. All Hail Pharoah!
All Hail the Tail!

30

The second letter also refers

to my propensity for causing
bad luck to befall certain teams
in sporting events
Dear Blackcat Bill,
Please tell me youre not
going back to Omaha after
LSUs two and barbecue
disaster you caused in 2013.
Joe Btfspik
Thanks for the reminder, Joe.
It means a lot to me coming
from the greatest jinx of all
time (Google the comic strip
Lil Abner, boys and girls.).
By now, since my deadline
was June 13, you know how
the Tigers did in their first two
games at the College World
Series and, of course, any victory would be one more than I
produced two years ago.
But this team reminds me a
little of American Pharoah.
Despite some shortcomings,
they find a way to win.
They can come from behind,
survive rain delays and
thunderstorms that appear from
nowhere or sprint out to an
early lead with a scary
combination of power and
speed and hold off late rallies
much like the Triple Crown
champion.
Nearly all successful baseball
teams boast strength up the
middle and LSU fits that mold
nicely starting with a rightylefty duo on the mound in Alex
Lange and Jared Poche and
four Major League draftees in
catcher Kade Scivique (Go
Maurepas!), centerfielder
Andrew Stevenson and
infielders Jared Foster and Alex
Bregman. Should the Tigers
win the CWS, Bregman could
emerge as a poster child for
turning down the Majors
out of high school and playing
college ball at its highest level
and still get drafted in the top
two picks. Are you recruits
listening?
If LSU has won the first two
games at press time, look for a
Pharoah-like run for glory to
another historic championship.
And I promise to stay home
this year.
And finally, an always appreciated correspondence from one
of my former students
Hey, Wild Bill from

Prairieville,
I remember we always did a
lot of Shel Silverstein in your
class when you taught English
Lit. (Some people said you
taught everything lit.)
Whether it was poetry like A
Light in the Attic or story
songs like A Boy Named Sue,
I always enjoyed that dude.
I was just wondering what
sort of obscure arts you were
digging these days?
Miss N. Farmed
Dear Miss N.,
Funny you should bring up
Shel because hes connected
with a 1972 record that has
finally been released-43 years
after its conception-that I have
really fallen for.
Im sure youve seen some of
my writings waxing nostalgic
about the good old days
when Prairieville was still
country and you knew
everybody in church and the
Fourth of July was spent at
Landrys Park playing ball and
climbing greasy poles.
Well, a couple of visionaries
named James Casey and Vince
Matthews tried to capture that
Polaroid snapshot of an
America gone by in an album
called The Kingston Springs
Suite over four decades ago.

Matthews was the driving

force of this ambitious project
that was backed by Nashville
heavyweights including Johnny
Cash, Kris Kristofferson and
Cowboy Jack Clement. The
producer was none other than
your favorite renaissance man
Shel Silverstein.
Fueled by amphetamines, this
long-haired Nashville rebel
went full speed ahead with his
revolutionary plans-even proposing the then-preposterous
idea of filming a video for each
song on the album.
Remember-this was almost 10
years before a television channel
called MTV was launched
in 1981.
If Vinces life was a train
wreck, it paled in comparison
to the actual train wreck he
caused in Kingston Springs (20
miles outside of Nashville and
light years apart) which almost
ended his video career before it
got started.
Matthews wanted to shoot a
chorus of townspeople singing
God Save Kingston Springs
from the highest point in town
which happened to be a train
trestle. He rented a cherry
picker from a local tree-trimming company and placed his
cameraman in the bucket on

top of the bridge.

The concept was brilliant-the
planning, not so much. No
one bothered to check the train

rary folk song I ever heard.

Vinces habits led to crazier
and crazier ideas and although
he did write Don Dixons
favorite Gene Watson songLove in the Hot Afternoonhe dropped out of the Nashville
recording scene until his death
in 2013.
He was too damned brilliant
for his own good, said Merle
Kilgore who co-wrote Ring of
Fire with June Carter.
And that great speckled bird

Silverstein in a song simply

At the very least, The

43 years to get it released.

Get with
the
Tradition
By Brandt Bourque

For as long as Ryan can

remember music has always
been a way of life for the Foret
family. Uncle Wayne Foret and
cousin Aaron Foret have been
lighting up the music scene in
the south for decades. Thats
why it only seemed natural to
call the project that started as a
small two piece nearly 15 years
ago Foret Tradition. Ryan,
joined by Brandon Foret began
playing as a band around the
age of 16 or 17, and in 1999
released their first album,
Dance With Me featuring 10
songs written by the duo.

Ryan
Over the past fifteen years the
band has seen a few lineup
changes but now contains five
all star members from around

32

South Louisiana. Ryan Foret,

the ring leader, featured on lead
vocals and keys is from
Westwego. He has been part of
many great groups, playing on
the road with Wayne Toups and
Johnny Allen to name a few.
Backing up Ryan, the all star
band features Jason Parfait on
keyboards, saxophone and
backing vocals. Jason is from
the Houma area and has gigged
with Marc Broussard, recorded
with Ray Boudreaux of The
Voice and was recently inducted into the Westbank Music
Hall of Fame. Mark Templet
is the guitar player in the group
and also shares background

vocal duties. Mark is from

Pierre Part and has played with
the legendary Percy Sledge and
Don Rich for many years. Mark
is also a 2014 inductee of the
Westbank Music Hall of
Fame and appeared in the
movie The Badge. Bass
player Allan Maxwell is a
resident of Madisonville and cut
Allan

his teeth on Bourbon St.

Starting on the bass at the
young age of 17 Allan has been
playing professionally for 25
years now and has toured with
Marc Broussard and King
Floyd. Gonzales native, Lynn
Boudreaux rounds out the
group on drums. Lynn has
been a professional drummer
for over 20 years playing all
over the gulf south opening for
national acts like Diamond Rio

and Lonestar. Lynn has been

Forets drummer for the last
seven years.
When you show up at a Foret
Tradition show you need to be
prepared to dance! Forets mix
of music is heavily influenced
by Ryans idol, Fats Domino,
and they try to blend in the
perfect mix of swamp pop and
top 40 into every gig. Because
of an extensive setlist that mix
can change from venue to
venue. So whether you make it
out to Henderson to see them
at Pats or you catch them at
one of their many festival shows

band haven't looked back yet!

Look for Ryan Foret and
Foret Tradition at Park Place in
Gonzales on June 26th! For
more dates and to purchase
CDs of the band check out
forettradition.net. In 2016 the
tradition continues as the guys
will again embark on the Foret
Tradition Cruise April 24-30
out of Galviston, TX with Royal
Caribbean. Watch the website
for more information on the
Mark

dont expect to here the same

songs each night. They can
adjust their song list according
to what the venue needs,
Some places want almost all
swamp pop, others like a good
mix, states Boudreaux. A
normal set can consist of songs
from Johnny Allen, Wayne
Toups, Otis Redding, Wilson
Pickett, Huey Lewis and of
course Fats Domino. One
thing is for certain each night,
you will hear Forets most
popular song, Tee Na Nah.
Tee Nah Nah, the title track of
the album that cam out in 2005
put Ryan Foret on the map in
South Louisiana and he and his

2016 cruise. Also, keep your

eye out for the new album
produced and engineered by
Travis Thibodaux and mixed
by Mike Broussard Jr. due out
within the next few months.
Make sure you support this
great band as they keep the
tradition of southern music
alive for the next generation!

Thoughts from Bully

We All Make
Mistakes.
To quote the words from a
Tracey Lawrence song, Time
Marches On, I can assure you
that is does. Our hearing starts to
go from the many rock concerts
we attended in the 70s. Our
memory turns on and off and like
we all have done our entire life,
we make mistakes.
Ive made a few in my days. I
learned when you pick up sweet
babies they dont always smell

sweet. I learned in the 5th grade

not to dust the chalk line off your
favorite teachers butt just to help
her out. If you do, be ready for
the butt chewing of your life and
to get your heart broken for the
first time. Ive learned never to go
back to an ex-wife or girl friend.
They are exs for a reason.
Like my mother taught me, Ive
learned it is always best to admit
to the mistake and move on and
learn from it.
Last month I was in charge of
putting the Official Program of
the Jambalaya Festival together
and sure enough the first morning
I had a couple of people point out
a mistake I had made. It was an
honest mistake but a mistake never
the less.
Last year when I was taking
photos of the Champ of Champs
contest. I was told all of the cooks
on the end row were the
participants. All the cooks look
like champions to me. When I got
to the end of the row I took a
photo of Ralph Delatte and his
helper. Little did I know they were
the first cooks of a second row of
cooks along the back side of the
contest. Needless to say I put

them in as a past champion and it

was brought to my attention by a
former champ. Oh well. Sorry

Hey Dr. Rob,

Im sending you
a selfie.

Ralph Jr. and good luck in the

future and hope you make it to
this page. You guys look like
champions.
This past month I had an
opportunity to play golf with LSU
baseball players from the 1975
SEC Championship team.I heard
many fun stories about games and
players. The one story that stood
out was a story about the coach
Jim Smith and a mistake he made.
Prior to the game the coach
called the team together and
pointed out he was tired of the
other teams stealing their signs on
the bases. He came up with a plan
to have individual signs for each
player. He would write them down

Do I look
alright?.

ASCENSION PARISH

A N I M A L H O S P I TA L
34

225.744.4905

on a note card and use the cards to

relay the signs induvialized for each
player.
The game was clicking along and
a fast runner got on base. Coach
Smith pulled the card from his
front pocket for the runner on first
and gave him the sign, a hand
across the chest. The pitch was
made and the runner didnt move.
Coach looked at him frustrated and
gave him the sign across the chest
again. The second pitch was made
and the runner didnt run again.
Frustrated Coach Smith hollered
across the diamond, Savoy! You
dont know your own signs? The
runner hollered back, Im
Juidise. Coach pulled out Juidises
card and tugged on his ear. He
took off for the steal and was
thrown out by 10 feet. The best
laid plans can be rocked
by mistakes.
You never know when a mistake
is going to jump up and bite you
on the butt. Last week, after our
friendly money round of golf with
15 players. We were sitting in the
club house and reminiscing about
the round. Sam Lavigne is one of
the most respected golfers out here
and everyone considers him the A
player. He had a decent round but
mention he went in the sand trap
on number 3. He wasnt worried
because he knew the trap and it
would be an easy up and down for
par. When he approached the trap

he saw that his ball was in a foot

print. Someone in the groups
ahead of him had not raked the
trap. I thought it would be fun to
start some s*%#. I spoke up
immediately and said it was Jim
from my team. Jim looked at me
shouted, No, not me! Dont
throw me under the bus. We
recounted our 4 man group and
none of us had been in that trap.
The group that played ahead of us
started looking at each other. Then
they realized several of them had
been in that trap and they started
pointing fingers.
The point of this story is with
our friendly game of golf it could
have been anyone of our balls in
that foot print. It could be David,
Jim, Jeff or Pete. It could be Bill,
Mike, Russell or Frankie. It wouldnt have mattered one bit but you
dont mess with Sams game.

The Difference
is in the Details

Grass Rangers is dedicated to making

your life easier by providing trained
crews to Design, Build and Maintain
almost any aspect of your landscape.

By Tracy
Taking
Back the
Responsibility
There have been many trends
or shifts throughout our lives
that have changed our way of
doing things.
Fifty or more years ago the
majority of families raised their
own meat animals, vegetable
gardens, canned their own jellies,
and collected their own eggs. The
word organic didnt exist, natural,
either. Growing was basic, it was
natural and didnt need an extra
title to tell us so.
Breakfast consisted of farm fresh
eggs gathered from the coop in
the early morning, bacon from a
pig that lived in the yard, jelly
from the berries gathered from
the field, and butter that was
churned while sitting on the
porch. If you wanted a loaf of
bread, you made that too.
In the late 80s and early 90s
there was a major shift that
changed this way of life. Women
were no longer interested in
performing the demeaning duties
of domestic chores and instead
became enthusiastic about entering
the workplace and earning a
monetary living like their male
counterparts. The prized
possession of the day shifted from
an award winning pie to a
day-planner. Anyone who was anyone carried one and the fuller it
was with appointments the
more successful a person was
thought to be.
With such a busy lifestyle no one
had time left in the day to prepare
meals from scratch or to raise their
own meat or vegetables and
truthfully, no one really wanted
to, so the task of providing food
for our families fell into the
hands of strangers.

The convenience of going to the

grocery store and choosing
anything we wanted was a delight.
Everything was prettily packaged
and just sitting there waiting on us
to swing by and scoop it up.
Convenience didnt stop with just
packaged meat it offered perfectly
colored tomatoes and bell peppers
. And if we were too busy to dice
up a tomato, we could buy boxed
food that contained dehydrated
vegetables and cheeses. We simply
add hot water.
This pleased the public very much.
Quick and easy is the ticket for the
modern, busy world.
It wasnt until recently did we
finally notice that our young girls
of 8 are aging as though theyre
17, obesity is at an all-time high
and our overall health has
deteriorated. Then did we finally
look into the food on the grocery
store shelves and ask where
did it come from? What we
found horrified us.
Our beef and poultry have never
seen the light of day from a
pasture, but instead grew in a feed
lot on grain and sometimes ground
up animal parts. (Hence, Mad
Cow Disease) A feed lot? That
word never existed, either. When
raising animals in feed lots
antibiotics are necessary to combat
the diseases that are inevitable
when packing that many animals
together, and GMOs (Genetically
Modified Organisms) are in place
because we insist on a turkey-sized
breast from a chicken and a
perfectly shaped cucumber.
Preservatives are added because
much of our vegetables are shipped
from other regions of the world
and would spoil under natural
conditions.
Suddenly were ready, willing and
eager to take back the responsibility of feeding our families. No
longer insulted by what we once
thought to be a demeaning role.
Weve learned it is the role that
holds the most value of all, our
health and the future of our children. You Are What You Eat.
